Panthers Shopping Spree Nets Hudler, Purcell and Kindl

Fantasy Impact: The Panthers have acquired Jiri Hudler, Teddy Purcell and Jakub Kindl in separate deals.

The Panthers get: Some much needed scoring depth. The strength of Florida this season has been their defensive play but rank just 11th in scoring. Not quite up to championship levels. The injury to Brandon Pirri also cost them a goal scorer. They also get a little bit of defensive depth.

The Oilers and Flames get: Picks in exchange for their pending UFAs who were unlikely to return. The Oilers got a 2016 third round pick for Purcell, though there is apparently a snafu with that pick due to a pick owed to New Jersey from last year's Jagr trade. The Flames meanwhile got a second and a fourth round pick for Hudler.

The Red Wings get: Some salary relief and a sixth round pick for a player who had fallen out of favour.

Fantasy Players Impacted: The Panthers top two lines should go unchanged with these additions.

Where Hudler and Purcell fit is on the third line with Nick Bjugstad. That’s three quality scoring lines. Don’t expect the Panthers to change much about their power play so Hudler and Purcell may lose out going from top line roles in Alberta to third line roles in Florida with little power-play time available. This will surely help Bjugstad, however. Both Hudler and Purcell have the chance to swap spots with Jussi Jokinen and Reilly Smith on line two or even with Jonathan Huberdeau or Jaromir Jagr on line three. Lots of possible mixing and matching available now. The biggest thing for the Panthers is that they have added insurance policies for injuries as the injury to Pirri highlights.

There may be an immediate bump for one of the additions as Huberdeau is on IR but he is set to return at some point next week so don’t overreact to one big game early.

Brief mention for Kindl who really did not make much of an impact for the division rival Wings and was ultimately waived without a claim. The Panthers gave up a late pick for him as the Wings agreed to retain some salary. Kindl is already down in the AHL and the Panthers will likely keep him there. Eighth or ninth defenseman on the depth chart.

In Calgary, Hudler had been skating with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau. Now a spot is open on that line which is likely to be filled by Micheal Ferland as he has been tried in that spot a few times before. They could stack the top line with Sam Bennett in Hudler’s spot but they have not really tried that before. When Bennett has been bumped up it has been in a swap with Gaudreau. Bennett could grab Hudler’s top unit power-play time though. Ultimately, this hurts the Flames’ offense a little bit so the top line along with Mark Giordano, TJ Brodie and Dougie Hamilton take a hit though it may only add up to a point or two over the final 20 or so games.

In Edmonton, Purcell had been held out of the last couple of games with Zack Kassian filling in for him on a line with Taylor Hall and Leon Draisaitl. This is a great spot for Kassian who may score a dozen points to finish the season, though that would likely be the maximum he might produce.

Players this helps, in order:

Zack Kassian

Micheal Ferland

Nick Bjugstad

Players this hurts, in order:

Jiri Hudler

Teddy Purcell

Mark Giordano

TJ Brodie

Dougie Hamilton
