Fantasy Impact: The Oilers acquire Patrick Maroon from the Ducks in exchange for Martin Gernat and a fourth round pick.
The Oilers get: A big possession winger signed for two more seasons after this one.
The Ducks get: Assets for a player who had played his way out of the regular rotation.
Fantasy Players Impacted: The writing was on the wall for Maroon long before the Ducks acquired Brandon Pirri and Jamie McGinn. While he had had success playing with Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf in the past, Maroon fell flat on his face this season and was eventually shuffled to the fourth line. No room for him with all these new additions.
In Edmonton, Maroon may get a chance at a top-six role right away. With Benoit Pouliot out with a separated shoulder there is room for a LW to jump up with Connor McDavid and Jordan Eberle. Highly intriguing but Maroon may not have the speed to keep pace with those two. More likely, Maroon finds a home on the third or fourth line but could still find some power-play minutes as a net-front presence. Anton Lander has at times had a spot as a net-front presence but that surely ends now.
Because you will ask, yes, Nail Yakupov might take Pouliot’s minutes on the McDavid line as well. In fact, he might be more likely to land in that spot than Maroon. The competition, however opens Yakupov up to losing out on this spot.
Martin Gernat gets a fresh start but lands in an organization deep with blue line talent. He is an unlikely fantasy commodity as it is but this makes it less likely that he’ll have an impact. Read more on Gernat here.
