Dobber's offseason fantasy hockey grades – Ottawa

For the last 13 years (12 with The Hockey News) I have reviewed each team from a fantasy-hockey standpoint and graded them. My 14th annual review will appear here on DobberHockey throughout the summer. This is not a review of the likely performance on the ice or in the standings, but in the realm of fantasy hockey.

Enjoy!

GoneMika Zibanejad, Patrick Wiercioch, Alex Chiasson, Chris Phillips, Scott Gomez, Matt Frattin, Dave Cameron (Head Coach)

IncomingDerick Brassard, Chris Kelly, Mike Blunden, Patrick Sieloff, Guy Boucher (Head Coach), Pierre Dorion (GM)

Impact of changes – Acquiring a left-shooting center to play with right-shooting Bobby Ryan is an under-the-radar move here. If the theory works and chemistry happens, this could turn Ryan back into a 65-point player instead of the 55-point guy we’ve been seeing lately. And that would have a huge domino effect because it would essentially give the Senators a second legitimate scoring line. One assumes that Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman take another step forward towards 65-plus points and a healthy Kyle Turris could get back up there as well.

Ready for full-time – Ryan Dzingel is an underrated prospect who is on almost nobody’s radar in fantasy hockey. A seventh-round pick boasting average size and coming out of college with decent numbers – historically those players rarely turn into anything. But his transition to the AHL has been excellent as he posted 0.82 points per game in his sophomore season there. And in the NHL with limited ice time he still managed nine points in 30 games. There is logjam in Ottawa’s top six, but an injury or two up there could see Dzingel getting an opportunity, provided he keeps producing and improving at his current rate. (Read more on Dzingel here)

Matt Puempel was the 24th overall pick in 2011 and although he disappointed in 2014-15, he really bounced back last season. A born sniper and potential 30-goal, 55-point guy, Puempel tallied 30 points in 34 games for Binghamton. His stint in Ottawa wasn’t quite so great as he managed just two goals in 26 games (on 26 shots), despite seeing more ice time than Dzingel. (Read more on Puempel here)

Nick Paul is the centerpiece of the Jason Spezza trade with Dallas in 2014. So the Senators are not only high on him, but they need him to be a successful NHLer and the sooner the better. So that’s not just Golden Boy status, but hell – it’s Platinum Boy status. A 6-4, 230-pound forward with the talent to score 37 goals in 58 OHL games has a lot of teams drooling. But his pro debut was a modest one from a fantasy standpoint (17 points in 45 AHL games) and his NHL stint saw him manage just five points in 24 games despite 12:11 per ice time per game. He could use a full year in the AHL to gain the confidence needed to better dominate. But the Sens seem to be trying to rush him just because some aspects of his game are NHL-ready. If they do that, then he’ll become the next Taylor Pyatt. But if they give him AHL time to hone his scoring touch, then there is plenty of upside here. We’ll see what happens. (Read more on Paul here)

Fantasy Outlook – I still like this team a lot because of the steady flow of prospects with fantasy upside every year. A nice little conveyor belt they have rolling. And Stone has the potential to become a point-per-game player. But until they get one of those (besides Erik Karlsson), the Sens probably won’t earn ‘A’ status. They could also use some depth in goal, as I don’t trust Andrew Hammond as a fulltime No.1 and the prospects are nothing impressive. And meanwhile Craig Anderson isn’t getting any younger.

Fantasy Grade: B (last year was B+)

The team got better offensively this offseason so it makes no sense to have them as a Lower grade than last year. they are also adding MacArthur. Oconnor and Hogberg are two good goalie prospects. Hogberg has upside.

    • Dobber 2016-09-03 at 11:39

O’Connor is a good goalie prospect coming off a terrible year. I would bet my house that he doesn’t play 50 NHL games. Hogberg has upside – but 20 other teams have a Hogberg or a prospect better than Hogberg. You know this, so I wonder why you choose this point to plant your flag.

The team got better offensively, how? Zibs to Brassard? Nope. Last year they were given a B+ and it turns out that a B+ was a mistake. In hindsight, after the year they had, they deserved a C+. So the reality is, they improved from a C+ to a B.

      • Mark Legolas Stone 2016-09-03 at 11:55

C+? You’re talking about fantasy value here. After the season they had, finishing top 10 in scoring, they get at least a B+. So no it was not a mistake. The team had a lot of good scorers last year and will continue to be a force offensively.

Do you even do proper research? Zibanejad to Brassard is a substantial boost offensively (it’s not even close who is better as Zibanejad is the most overrated player the sens have had in while, he isn’t very good offensively) to the top six and they are getting back their top centre who was injured since December. Thats huge. And That’s excluding adding macarthur who is at least a 45 point player. The sens might lead the league in 20 goal scorers as they were second or third last season. What other teams could have six players with 20 goals and upwards of seven players with 50 points?

I guess you’re just like most Toronto pundits. You don’t know a lot about the second Ontario team.

        • Dobber 2016-09-03 at 12:20

Mark, You’re talking irrationally and frankly, insulting.

This is my full-time job. It’s also my business. I don’t work 40 hours a week, I work 80. That’s 80 hours of nothing but hockey. I used to know football and baseball and tennis very well – but over the last 10 years my knowledge in those sports have whittled down to zero. And why? Because I focus 100% on hockey. I want to know everything I can about hockey – about the players, about where they’ve come from, how they got here and where they’re going. 80 hours per week, 11 fantasy guides, 10 midseason guides and 10 prospect reports. Daily Ramblings since 2005 and monthly Rankings since 2001. That’s a lot of time and effort to just learn about Toronto alone and no other teams.

And you insult me by telling me that I don’t know a lot about Ottawa and that I’m like most Ontario pundits? Speak to me properly and with respect or our interaction is done here. Geez, as if I personally insulted you by giving your team a ‘B’ instead of your perceived B+. O’Connor is like 150th in the league for fantasy value goalies, MacArthur is not Jesus Christ. You ask me if I do my research and then you get into Zibanejad vs. Brassard WHICH I ADDRESSED (so you didn’t read my article, well done).

I will say one more thing – I don’t give a shit about any particular team other than my fantasy team. If I had six Ottawa players on my fantasy team and and none on Toronto and Ottawa played Toronto in the Eastern Conference Final – I would be cheering for Ottawa. The team with my guys on it. My loyalty is the fantasy league’s championship. And my goal here is to help the reader. Accuse my of bias and you expose yourself as a typical Internet troll with Ottawa-colored glasses on.

          • Mark Legolas Stone 2016-09-03 at 12:37

Great reply with no substance and simply insults hurled in my direction. Really wants to make people visit your site. You’re not helping the reader at all with uninformed articles like this. Goodbye

          • Dobber 2016-09-03 at 12:42

            A) You didn’t deserve “substance” because you went after me, my livelihood and my business with classless and baseless insults
            B) Quote one single insult in that comment back to you. I did not insult you at all. But go ahead and make things up, kay?

          • Mark 2016-09-03 at 16:41

Don’t reply to these guys, Dobber, it just fuels them. Or respond with sarcastic praise like – “Thanks for the advice, I’ll try to improve my research!”
With Phaneuf in the mix, how do you think Cody Ceci will do?

          • Dobber 2016-09-03 at 21:41

I think Ceci is only getting better, and soon won’t be held back by anyone. Question is – will it happen early enough in the season to help

          • Brendan Daw 2016-09-03 at 13:12

Do you build your fantasy team around the Sens? Do you finish around 5th every year? Good, not great? Lots of 45-50 pointers? If someone were to rate your squad it might get a… B?

Plenty of good offensive talent, no game breakers not named Karlsson. Lot of B’s out there you might say.

Comments like “Hammond isn’t great but was top five in 5v5 save percentage last year.” don’t help your cause. That sir, is a B rated comment.

“As for Oconnor he still has good upside and I bet he becomes at least a backup.” Love the confidence. Just pushing that B rated upside.

Calling Dobber biased when your name is “Mark Legolas Stone”? Not a good look… and I hate that you brought Legolas into this.

          • Mark Legolas Stone 2016-09-03 at 13:15

do you realize lots of 50 pointers is a fantastic offense in today’s NhL ? Mark stone is a game breaker by the way and so is Hoffman. But ignore the facts. You’re proving my point. There’s zero reason to say the team got worse than last years grade

          • Brendan Daw 2016-09-03 at 13:31

Mhmm. Bit of a Matt Cooke.

          • Mark 2016-09-03 at 16:35

I was getting a Sean Avery vibe.

  2. paul 2016-09-03 at 21:11

I think Brass hit the high water mark last season. He is still a very effective offense first player with finals experience which makes the Senators a more dangerous team. Just don’t expect much defensive effort and fans will be very happy with what DB brings to the rink. As Darryl said and as a Turris owner I will be cheering for him over Brassard, despite wishing him the best.
I don’t know where I would get such great hockey coverage if it weren’t for this site so as such please don’t feed the trolls.
