Pominville, Parise and Coyle Forming an Elite Third Line
Fred Poulin
2017-02-14
Let's have a look at the hottest lines in the National Hockey League since the beginning of the season, including a few defensemen producing offensively. You will also find below the "Cold as ice" line and duo of the week.
Hot forwards
Artemi Panarin – Artem Anisimov – Patrick Kane (Chicago)
With six points in his last five games, Anisimov is not slowing down even if everyone was expecting a steep decline offensively after a torrid start. He now has 20 goals and 20 assists for 40 points in 52 games playing on the Hawks' first line. He is only two points away from his career best of 42 points and he should easily crack the 65-point plateau for the first time in his career. Kane is on fire lately, notching four goals and five assists for nine points in his last five contests. He is now finally back above a point-per-game pace with 58 points, including 19 goals and 39 assists, in 57 games. He should be able to score more than 80 points, but he will not crack the 100-point plateau again this season. With seven points in his last five games, Panarin won't slow down either for Chicago. The sophomore is on pace to hit the 70-point plateau again (he got 77 points in his rookie season), having recorded 19 goals and 51 points in 57 games so far this season.

Zach Parise – Charlie Coyle – Jason Pominville (Minnesota)
After a very, but very slow start this season (seven points in 20 games), Pomminville has caught fire lately, recording four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in his last 12 games. The veteran right winger now has 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points en route to his regular scoring pace of between 50 and 60 points after a disappointing 2015-16 season where he only recorded 36 points in 75 games. This is the year Coyle finally gets it done and blossom as an offensive threat for the Wild recording six points in his last four games. With 14 goals and 30 assists for 44 points (which is already a career best) in 55 matches, Coyle will surpass the 60-point plateau for the first time in his young career. Parise, the last member of that trio has five goals and one helper in his last eight games. The speedy winger, who has missed some time with an injury, has 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 46 games. He will have a tough time reaching the 50-point mark for the fourth season in a row. With all the depth the Wild have up front the above three players don't get much power play time so their value is diminished.
Overall Production = 106 points
PP Production = 20 points
Michael Grabner – Kevin Hayes – J.T. Miller (NYRangers)
This line has been together for some time, but after a dry spell in December, it is finally back on track since the New Year. Miller, who has potted six goals and 17 points in his last 15 games, has already eclipsed his career best of 43 points in 82 games last year. So far this season, he has recorded 18 goals and 28 assists for 46 points in 56 games already. While he slowed down in December, Hayes is having a stellar season scoring four goals and 19 points in the last 15 games for the Blueshirts. The lanky pivot has a respectable season so far, recording 15 goals and 27 assists for 42 points in 51 games New York. He is only three points away from tying his best production: 45 points two years ago. With six points in his last five games, Grabner is heating up again after a very hot start (10 points in 13 games). The apt penalty killer is fitting in nicely in the Big Apple having notched 26 goals and 10 helpers for 36 points in 55 games. It is worth nothing that he has ZERO points on the power play this season, so he is a beast at even strength.
Overall Production = 124 points
PP Production = 11 points
Dynamic duo
Ryan Ellis – Roman Josi (Nashville)
P.K. who? Everyone was expecting to see Subban lead the Nashville defense in scoring, but the offense if coming from another pairing. Ellis has three goals and five assists for eight points in his last 12 games. With eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points in 48 games, he should improve on last year's career best of 32 points and crack the 35-point barrier. His partner Josi is red hot with six points (including four goals) in his past four games. He is having a very solid campaign for the Preds potting nine goals and 19 assists for 28 points in 47 games after missing some time with an injury. The rearguard is currently on pace for a 40+ point season, which is way below what is expected from him by General Managers. After scoring 61 and 55 points in the last two seasons, Josi is struggling to be consistent with his former captain Shea Weber.

Cold as ice line
Artturi Lehkonen – Alex Galchenyuk – Paul Byron (Montreal)
After an unexpected offensive production early this season, Lord Byron is back to Earth, recording only one point in his last 10 games. With career highs in goals (14), assists (15) and points (29) tough, the waiver-wire acquisition remains a nice surprise in fantasy circles this season. Still, he'll be lucky if he hits the 40-point mark, so stay away from him. With only two points in seven games since his return from re-aggravating his knee injury, Galchenyuk is struggling mightily to produce offensively away from Radulov and Pacioretty. With 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points in 37 contests, he will have to find his scoring touch fast in order to help Montreal stay atop the Atlantic Division. The rookie Lehkonen has been a disappointment so far this season as he has been held off the scoresheet in his past 10 games. Playing mostly in the middle-six, the left winger was expected to produce more and give the Habs much-needed complimentary scoring. He will be lucky if he pots 25 points this season.
EV Strength Production = 74 points
PP Production = 18 points
Cold as ice duo
Mark Giordano – Dougie Hamilton (Calgary)
Oh, the mighty has fallen as Giordano is cold as a January night in Winnipeg having been held off the scoresheet in his last 10 games. With only six goals and 22 points in 57 games in 2016-17, the blueliner will have a very hard time repeating last year's career high of 21 goals and 56 points. On pace for only 32 points, Giordano's struggles have pushed the Flames out of the playoffs as they are now ranked 9th in the Western Conference. His defensive partner Hamilton has a single point in his last five contests. Overall, he now has eight goals and 25 helpers for 33 points in 56 games for the Flames. He is currently on pace to eclipse his career best of 43 points recorded last season.
