The Dobber Hockey panel makes their second-round selections for the 2017 Playoffs.
****
We move onto the second round of the 2017 NHL playoffs, which means it's time for a fresh round of picks from the writers and editors that make up the Dobber Hockey panel. First, a quick refresher of how the first round went:
The leader of the individual writers and editors was Adam Daly-Frey, who managed a correct selection on seven out of the eight first-round series, missing only on Columbus-Pittsburgh. As a group, the consensus achieved a 5-3 record, failing to hit on the Canadiens, Bruins, and Blackhawks. Of those three, I personally will wonder what the Boston-Ottawa series would have looked like had the Bruins had some better luck with health. Regardless, the Senators have a deep forward group, and the best defenceman in the league. The quarter-finals brought the career consensus record here at Dobber Hockey to an impressive 77-35 over the previous seven-plus seasons.
Moving on to the next round, there is one clear favourite among the panelists, with the Washington Capitals getting the nod from 14 of 18 submissions. Things are a little more splits after that, as Nashville is on 12 lists, while Edmonton and New York were featured on 11 each. No one picked a sweep in any of the matchups, either, so the panel is expecting competitive games throughout. The only place where Dobber's selection differentiates with the consensus is the Edmonton-Anaheim series. Without further ado, here are the second-round picks for the Dobber Hockey panel:

First of all, hats off to Adam Daly-Frey for going 7-1 in the first round !! With the eighteen overtime games that we witnessed anything could have happened but here we are anxiously awaiting the start to the second round.
From my observations of the first round, I can’t go against the reigning Stanley Cup champs at this time. I believe they have too many weapons for the Caps again this year and if Washington heads off to the sin bin too often, they will end up paying a heavy price. The Penguins ended up seven points behind the Caps in the year end standings….all of us would have surely thought it would have been much more if we would have been told that the man games lost were going to be 278 for Pittsburgh and 49 for Washington. Give me the Pens in 6.
The Rangers vs Ottawa is a different beast, certainly scoring wise. Being a Habs fan, I saw enough of the Rangers in the series to know how ”in the zone” King Henrik is. That along with a playoff tested core group (10 players left from their run to the finals in 2014), I will take the Rangers in 6.
Whenever I tuned into the Preds – Hawks series I always got the feeling that Nashville had too many men on the ice….they were EVERYWHERE ! They made the Hawks look slow and old and at the same time put a heavy dent into my hopes of winning a playoff pool. I can’t say I am buying what Jake Allen is selling. From the month of March to the end of the season the Blues won 15 games, but only 4 of those were against playoff teams. The Preds will finally make it to the conference finals in 6 games.
Edmonton is a feel good story but this year’s story ends at the hands of the Ducks. The Oilers took down a hurting San Jose team and will now face a team that has not lost in regulation since March 5th which will be 53 days ago when the puck is dropped tomorrow night. Obviously they do not like to lose and have been playing that way for many a day. Yes McDavid is a game changer and he’ll use this series as another stepping stone to one day winning the cup…but not this year…Ducks in 6.
Lastly, all of you should be complemented more often for the time, energy, and analysis you put into your work on the Dobber site. I personally greatly appreciate what each and everyone of you brings to the table. As in the game of hockey, usually the twenty players on the ice who work together as a team wins more games. As for this site, it is obvious that you take pride in what you do and the team that you are.
Enjoy the second round !!
I’m going with Daly-Frey.
Ottawa in 6 – Lundqvist’s numbers come back to earth.
Pittsburgh in 6 – Fleury will improve or Murray will return.
Anaheim in 5 – Home ice will be big in this one.
St. Louis in 7 – Rinne vs. Allen will come down to a game 7 in St. Louis.
I’m liking Bren Des picks for round two.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
I know. I feel shame.
