2019-10-02

With the puck about to drop on the 2019-20 season, our writers weigh in on their predictions for both player and team awards and accomplishments.

Let’s start with the players:

Awards Player to…
Hart Art Ross Norris Vezina Calder Rebound Disappoint
Burnett McDavid McDavid Karlsson Gibson Kakko Hall Barrie
Campbell McDavid McDavid Hedman Vasilevskiy J. Hughes Neal Kessel
Clifford McDavid McDavid Klingberg Gibson Makar Gostisbehere J. Hughes
Daly-Frey McDavid McDavid Weber Bobrovsky Glass Pacioretty J. Hughes
DeSouza McDavid McDavid Subban Andersen Makar Schneider Duchene
Dobber McDavid Kucherov Rielly Bobrovsky J. Hughes Arvidsson Faulk
Gooding MacKinnon Kucherov Hedman Vasilevskiy Makar Gostisbehere Barrie
Kane Kucherov McDavid Hedman Price J. Hughes Benn Bishop
Livingstone MacKinnon MacKinnon Jones Vasilevskiy Makar Trocheck Binnington
MacLean Price Kucherov Josi Price Kakko Gostisbehere Bishop
Olafson McDavid McDavid Rielly Vasilevskiy J. Hughes Keller Skinner
Prata McDavid McDavid Carlson Price J. Hughes Granlund Kessel
Robinson McDavid McDavid Josi Vasilevskiy Makar Gostisbehere Draisaitl
Roos McDavid McDavid Josi Price Gusev Schwartz Fleury
Consensus McDavid McDavid Hedman Vasilevskiy J. Hughes Gostisbehere Barrie
Josi Makar J. Hughes
Kessel
Bishop

Connor McDavid's speculated long recovery from his knee injury in April wasn't enough to concern the panel, as he was the clear consensus projected winner of both the Art Ross Trophy and Hart Trophy.

The panel also believes in Andrei Vasilevskiy as the clear number one goalie, along with Shayne Gostisbehere as the player most likely to rebound. There was less consensus among the other picks, as you can see.

An interesting observation: Jack Hughes was a popular choice both for the Calder Trophy and for the player most likely to disappoint. This reflects the uncertainty that many rookies have, even ones as highly regarded as Hughes.

Now the teams:

Division Winners Stanley Cup
Atlantic Metropolitan Central Pacific Winner Finalist
Burnett Toronto Washington St. Louis Vegas Tampa Bay Vegas
Campbell Toronto Washington Nashville Calgary Toronto Nashville
Clifford Tampa Bay Carolina Nashville Vegas Nashville Carolina
Daly-Frey Toronto Carolina Colorado Vegas Vegas Boston
DeSouza Tampa Bay New Jersey Dallas San Jose Tampa Bay Dallas
Dobber Tampa Bay Washington St. Louis Calgary Tampa Bay Calgary
Gooding Tampa Bay Washington Colorado San Jose Tampa Bay Vegas
Kane Tampa Bay Carolina Nashville San Jose Tampa Bay Vegas
Livingstone Tampa Bay Washington Dallas San Jose San Jose Tampa Bay
MacLean Toronto Washington St. Louis Vegas Vegas Tampa Bay
Olafson Toronto Philadelphia Colorado Calgary Nashville Washington
Prata Tampa Bay Carolina Nashville Calgary Tampa Bay Calgary
Robinson Toronto Carolina Colorado Vegas Colorado Toronto
Roos Tampa Bay Carolina St. Louis Calgary Dallas Carolina
Consensus Tampa Bay Washington St. Louis Vegas Tampa Bay Vegas
Carolina Nashville Calgary
Colorado

This season should be a highly competitive one with lots of teams in the mix. Only one team (Tampa Bay) was the sole winner in its division, and it wasn’t unanimous by any means, with Toronto receiving plenty of votes. Tampa was also chosen to complete the task that it could not last season, which is win the Stanley Cup. The most popular pick to face them in the Stanley Cup Final is Vegas, who would already be making their second Stanley Cup Final appearance in just three NHL seasons!
