Hello and welcome to another week of Lining Up. Hopefully you all got to mix in some college hockey games this past weekend as the NCAA Frozen Four tournament kicked off. There were a lot of upsets and a crazy 5OT game as well. In our humble opinion, it was more entertaining than the Final Four tournament, though that has been very fun as well. But it is also getting closer to the fantasy playoffs, so let's turn our attention back to the NHL and look at some forwards that might be able to help you with that postseason push.
These players are at or below 40 percent rostership in Yahoo leagues. In most cases they are playing on top scoring lines and/or power play units for their teams. If you've been hit with the injury bug, a cold streak that has lasted way too long, or are just looking for your next great streaming option, consider these guys to fill the bill.
LU's Top Line
- Eeli Tolvanen NSH – LW,RW (31 percent rostered) – Tolvanen continues to rise in the eyes of Preds fans and fantasy owners alike. Currently he has taken the spot of the injured Filip Forsberg on Nashville's top scoring unit. Skating with Ryan Johansen and Viktor Arvidsson, Tolvanen is on a roll with seven points (2G,5A) in his last five games. He is also on the first power play unit and has cashed in three PPP in that same time frame. Tolvanen is also not afraid to throw his weight around, racking up 17 hits in his last seven games. Two notes of warning here, he is only averaging between 14-15 minutes per game on the ice in his last four, and his SOG totals have been a bit erratic, as he only has six total in his last five games. Those items aside, Tolvanen is a player that you absolutely should be considering, especially as Nashville heats up and challenges for a playoff spot.
- Jared McCann PIT – C,LW (14 percent) – McCann has been called upon to fill a more important role as injuries have taken their toll on the Penguins lineup. He has risen to that challenge and has an impressive, if brief, point streak going. In his last four games he has six points (3G,3A), with three of those coming on the power play. McCann is currently on the top PP unit with Sidney Crosby and the rest of Pittsburg's top line. His shooting has also increased and he has 16 SOG in his last five games. McCann has shown an ability to stay in the plus column, in fact he is a plus-10 in his last 10 games and has not had a minus game yet this season. His TOI is definitely lower than you would like, and he is bringing in almost no hits or blocks, so that is something to be aware of. Bottom line, if McCann is going to continue to be given opportunities on the top power play for the Pens, he is a great streamer option, and could possibly turn into more for you.
- Noel Acciari FLA – C,RW (11 percent) – Acciari is another player who is making the most of his promotion after a teammate's unfortunate injury. He is playing in Aleksander Barkov's spot on the Panthers' top line alongside Carter Verhaeghe and Anthony Duclair. Acciari is also currently on the top power play unit. In his last four games he has four assists, and two of those came with the man advantage. Adding scoring and especially power play scoring makes Acciari an attractive pick up because he also brings with him an average of 2.1 hits per game, and 1.5 blocks per game. Over this recent stretch he is also shooting a bit more, up to about two SOG per game over the last few. If you are a Barkov owner sweating out his injury (like us), Acciari is a suitable replacement. If you just want to ride this situation, keep a watch on Barkov's return, as Acciari's stock will drop at that time, but until then give him a run and hopefully pick up some points in a few categories.
LU's Second Line
- Viktor Arvidsson NSH – LW,RW (34 percent) – There was a lot of talk at the beginning of the year about Arvidsson potentially putting up big numbers. That hasn't happened so far and his ownership has dropped accordingly. However, with the Predators heating up lately, so have we seen with Arvidsson. Granted, it has only been a couple of games, but he has three points (1G,2A) in those last two, as well as 13 SOG in his last four games. He is averaging 3.2 SOG per game for the season, so that has been part of his game even in the leaner times for Nashville. He also has found himself in the positive column of plus-minus more often than not lately. While you can't really count on Arvidsson to bring along a lot of peripheral stats, he is a great option for a scoring league, as you might be able to catch him on the front end of a hot streak if you grab him soon.
- Paul Stastny WPG – C,LW (30 percent) – Stastny has been very solid on Winnipeg's top line and top power play units lately. Skating alongside Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler, he has five points (2G,3A) in his last five games, and also has nine points (4G,5A) in his last 11 games. Lately he is averaging about a hit per game, and also added a couple of PPP last Friday. Stastny and his line mates have been a little Jekyll and Hyde lately, looking great on the power play and kind of bad at 5v5. The result has been Stastny posting five minus games in his last 10. All in all you have to be interested in the potential here if they can start to get things turned around at even strength. This is one of the most gifted offensive lines in hockey, and Stastny is definitely showing signs of heating up. The Jets also have an off night schedule this week.
- Phil Kessel ARI – RW (32 percent) – Phil the thrill. What would it take for you to put Phil Kessel in your lineup? 32 percent of you already know the answer to that. For the rest of us, how about the fact that he has eight points (5G,3A) in his last five games, with four of those points being the PPP variety. He also has had an increase over the last few games from his usual 1.8 SOG average. He is pretty much dependent on scoring to be valuable to your team, so if you are in need of banger stats it would be good to look elsewhere. For those though that just need those scoring points, especially in deeper leagues, Kessel could be your guy. Add to this formula that Arizona has the Wednesday/Friday/Sunday schedule this week and how can you pass him up?
LU's Third Line
- Pius Suter CHI – C,LW,RW (12 percent) – Suter has been a bit quiet for a while despite centering a line with wingers Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat. But he has come alive over the past few games and is riding a four-game point streak (1G,3A). He's also started to pick up his shooting ever so slightly with 11 SOG in those last four games. The thing to be careful about here is that Kirby Dach has returned to the Hawks' lineup and could start sniping minutes and deployment from Suter. Dach is already on the top power play unit, and has started to see some minutes skating on a line with Patrick Kane. Suter is the one putting up the points right now however, so it is worth it to keep an eye on this situation and if you see that Suter has the primo deployment with Kane and DeBrincat, don't hesitate to toss him in your lineup and give him a start or two.
- Mikael Backlund CGY – C,RW (19 percent) – Backlund is a solid option if you just need a guy to get something for you in a few different areas. The Calgary lines were scrambled on Monday night, but before that Backlund was playing on a line with Matthew Tkachuk and Andrew Mangiapane. He is also centering the Flames second power play unit. In his last 10 games Backlund has seven points (2G,5A), 28 SOG, 11 hits, 6 blocks, and 47 face off wins. He has also been fairly consistent in each category over those games, which means that you know roughly what you are going to get from him in a given game or week.
- Anthony Beauvillier NYI – LW (7 percent) – We really like Beauvillier's line assignments right now. At even strength he is playing with Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Oliver Wahlstrom, two players who themselves have been skating very well lately. On the power play, Beauvillier is with New York's first unit. He has five points (4G,1A) in his last five games, is a plus three, and has 10 SOG during that time. Beauvillier will also throw about a hit per game and is averaging 16:18 TOI. He is certainly worth a look as either a streaming option, or perhaps as a longer term add in deeper leagues.
Fourth Line
- Christian Dvorak ARI – C,LW (29 percent) – Dvorak is heating up again, if only for a short two game stretch. But in his last two he has two goals and an assist. It helps that he has been skating with Conor Garland again, and is also on the top power play unit. He has stepped up his shooting with 10 SOG in his last four games, and does bring the physical element picking up a little under a hit and a block per game on the season.
- Nick Ritchie BOS – LW (15 percent) – For a while now fantasy commentators have been advising to watch Ritchie due to the fact that he has been on the Bruins top power play unit with the guys from the "perfection line". While that was and is good advice, Boston now finds themselves with out Brad Marchand, and will be looking to Ritchie to step up in his absence. This may be a spot to catch Ritchie on a hot streak. He has 19 SOG in his last five games, and had a two point night (1G,1A) this past Saturday. As a bonus, Ritchie is averaging 1.7 hits per game this season.
- Ross Colton TBL – C (0 percent) – Colton is our deep-deep pick this week. He is a currently a fourth line center for Tampa Bay, but the Lightning do not have your typical fourth liners. Over his last five games Colton has four points (1G,3A) and is also a plus-five. He added 13 hits and 27 faceoff wins in those five games, so he can also help in more than one area.
That's it for another week. Give us a follow or a shout on Twitter – @RinkmanHockey, and don't forget to have fun out there!
