Capped: Analyzing Potential Trade Targets in Giordano, Ristolainen, Miller, and More – Part 2

With there being so many high-profile players potentially being shipped around during the trade deadline this year it just felt right to talk about a few more of the potential trade candidates. This trade deadline is probably going to have more players getting fresh starts with new teams than what we've seen in years prior. This trade deadline is seemingly going to have a few more skill players end up on the move in comparison to some other years, so while they may be harder to target in your fantasy leagues, they are still potentially available depending on what the team's record is that has them. Teams with subpar records who are towards the bottom of the standings may be open to moving some of these players from last week's article and this week's to help accumulate draft capital, or younger players for cheaper value.

#1) Mark Giordano – D – Seattle Kraken

Contract: $6.75M – 1 Year remaining (expires this summer)
Roster Percentages: 85.1% ESPN, 50% Yahoo, 69% Fantrax

With Mark Giordano being the first captain in Kraken history, they began their franchise off on the right note. Giordano brings a plethora of experience on and off the ice along with tremendous ability on the ice. Currently Giordano sits at fifth on Seattle for total points, with 22 points (5 goals and 17 assists) in 47 games which would have him on pace for just shy of 40 points. To me that is the point of when you can say the offensive-style defenders have had a great season. Something to note as well is that he is on this pace with a very subpar roster around him as the Seattle Kraken are currently last in the Pacific Division with a record of 16-33-4. That record comes 36 points which is good for the third fewest in the NHL. Only behind the Arizona Coyotes and the Montreal Canadiens. While Giordano is a safe player for racking up the offensive stats, he is also a player who puts his body on the line every night. As it stands Giordano has 90 blocks on the season so far, this is the 25th most blocks in the NHL (Brayden McNabb leads with 132), mix that with his good ice time per night sitting at 21:32 minutes a game. He is a really solid fantasy asset, and he is more likely to go to a team that needs help producing on the back end which should only help boost Giordano. This is an excellent player to try and acquire at a retained salary.

#2) J.T. Miller – LW/C – Vancouver Canucks

Contract: $5.25M – 2 Years remaining
Roster Percentages: 99.2% ESPN, 98% Yahoo, 100% Fantrax

While you may not be able to get Miller off free agency in your league, he is a very valuable piece to be able to add through trading. Miller is currently having the best season of his life as he leads the Vancouver Canucks in points with 53 points (18 goals and 35 assists) in 50 games which in a full 82-game season would have him reaching 87 points. If this pace keeps up, this would be a career high for Miller, and it will be the most points that he has had since the 2019-20 season where he was able to post a respectable 72 points in 69 games in his first season with the Canucks. While the other main cast of the Canucks have been sort of struggling at different times during the year, Miller has been able to stay hot all season long. If the team does move on from Miller, expect him to go to a team that may be able to insulate him a little bit better than what the Canucks were able to. What I mean by that is that when he gets traded, he should be in a position where he is playing with better players. For a player who is over a point-per-game, having 114 hits (2.28 per game) is impressive, and for a player making $5.25M for the rest of this season, and next year that is a lot of value to add to your team. Then factor in the average time on ice and the number of shots that he has, which are 21:05 minutes per night and 123 shots (2.46 per game). His TOI is currently the fourth best on the Canucks, and when filtering by forwards he is their leader for the TOI stat. If you can add a player like J.T. Miller at the deadline for a decent price, I would highly recommend it. With numbers like that at that price tag for the rest of this year and for next season as well, it would be hard to resist trading for this player if he became available.

#3) Rasmus Ristolainen – D – Philadelphia Flyers

Contract: $5.4M – 1 Year remaining
Roster Percentages: 73.1% ESPN, 24% Yahoo, 52% Fantrax

Many Flyers fans were hoping Ristolainen would of worked out better this season, and honestly they all wish the season went a lot differently. Injuries have been plaguing the Flyers all season long. Ristolainen has been in the lineup consistently this season as he has played in 44 of the Flyers 50 games. In those 44 games, he has 12 points (2 goals and 10 assists). When the Flyers traded for him on draft day in this most recent offseason, I'm sure they were hoping for Ristolainen to put up closer to 40 points as opposed to 20 (in an 82-game season his current stats have on pace for 22 points). While the offensive numbers don't really jump out at you, he is currently logging 21:06 minutes a night on average. This is good for fourth across the entire Flyers roster. When you look at his peripheral numbers, you will see that he is 11th in the entire NHL with 153 hits (3.48 per game). No player who has more hits than him have less games played than he does, except for Ryan Reaves who has 43 games played and 181 hits (third in the NHL). Having 76 blocks on the year (1.73 per game) is good enough to have him ranking third on the Flyers roster. While he may not be putting up flashy offensive stats, he may see a boost in numbers if he does get traded at the deadline. The Flyers injury woes have been catastrophic to their overall ability to put the puck in the back of the net and Ristolainen is not benefitting from that. He is a player who can help deepen the categories that are hard to come by and if you can get him at a retained rate, you can have an effective player for a better price.

#4) Calvin de Haan – D – Chicago Blackhawks

Contract: $4.55M – 1 Year remaining
Roster Percentages: 10.1% ESPN, 6% Yahoo, 9% Fantrax

With roster percentages that low you may be questioning why he is on this list, he has fairly poor offensive stats this season with 5 points (1 goal and 4 assists) in 48 games (pacing under 10 points in a full 82 game season). The Blackhawks are having a lot of issues scoring goals as well this season, they are 29th in the league for total goals scored with only 126 across their 52 games played (2.42 per game). They are one of the lowest goal scoring teams this season, even though they are tied for the second most games played (Anaheim and Seattle lead with 53 games). With Chicago being 21 points behind third place in their division, that has them as the seventh best team in the Central Division (one place above the Coyotes). de Haan is very much a specialist, he won't help you much offensively, but he is one of the best peripheral players in the game. Currently he has 126 blocks (2.63 per game), this number is good enough to have him third across the NHL in this category. He only trails Brayden McNabb (132) and teammate Connor Murphy (128) in this category. With 90 hits on the season so far (1.88 per game), he ranks fourth on the Blackhawks roster in this area. His 19:13 minutes of TOI per game ranks sixth on the roster, and fourth at his position on that team. For a player who is producing at this sort of rate, it isn't overly bad value to have him added to your team at that cap hit. Mainly because you have a chance of adding him right from free agency as opposed to having to give up any assets to acquire him.

While none of these players have been officially traded yet, there is a lot of speculation that they will end up in a new home after the trade deadline as concluded on March 21st. There is going to be plenty of players moved on and around the deadline, these are just the ones that I feel will benefit fantasy managers going forward.
