The Winnipeg Jets have traded Andrew Copp and a 2023 sixth rounder to the New York Rangers for prospect Morgan Barron, two conditional second-round picks and a 2023 fifth rounder.
The Jets get: a solid prospect center who transitioned from a successful and productive college career to a solid start to pro hockey with 36 points in 46 AHL games with Hartford. He has also played 18 games (two points) for New York. His scouting profile is here.
The Rangers get: a solid two-way center and 50-plus point player who is great at the faceoff circle (over 53% wins in each of his last four seasons). Copp is also a top PK guy and a secondary PP guy, making him a special teams asset.
Fantasy Players Impacted: Copp slots in as New York's No.3 center, which bumps Filip Chytil to the fourth line and Jonny Brodzinski out of the lineup. Copp could also play the wing, which would displace Dryden Hunt in the top six. I do not expect Copp's production to take a jump, other than perhaps the usual new-team adrenalin stuff you sometimes see for a few games. With Tyler Motte and Nick Merkley added, this may knock Hunt and perhaps even Julien Gauthier to the press box.
With 2:25 of PP time per game now freed up, the Jets will give more of that to Nik Ehlers as well as Cole Perfetti (when he returns) and perhaps Mason Appleton.
