Looking Ahead: Demko, Canucks Benefit From Schedule

Welcome back everyone, we're right in the middle of fantasy playoffs where checking your team has become more stressful than ever before. I don't have much else, other than let's absolutely get a win and advance here.
The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)
Thatcher Demko, G, Vancouver Canucks (Rostered in 46% of ESPN leagues, 81% Fantrax, 76% Yahoo) – Does anyone remember draft night and possibly taking Demko in the earlier rounds? Yeah. Me neither. Seems like a lifetime ago now, but the Vancouver netminder might just be what we need here in the short-term.
When Demko was activated back for Vancouver I sort of washed over it like most of you probably did as well. Demko got off to a brutal start of the season losing his first six games of the season in October followed up by a lackluster November before missing time with a groin injury. Since being activated in late February though, Demko has seemingly been back to his old self and has even won his last four starts in net allowing just two goals or fewer in each.
Now you may be asking yourself, "Why a Vancouver goaltender as an Immediate Fix?" and that's a good question. This time of the year we need not just starts in net, but dependable ones. Probable starts and potentially missing out on points in net is not ideal at this time of the season and I think Demko helps fill that role as a lower-rostered option. The Canucks have a road back-to-back this weekend against the Kings and Ducks where I'd expect Demko to get one of those starts in net followed by a four-game week next week in which he'll likely be named the starter in three of those contests.
I don't like to speculate injuries, but I do think that we might come to find that Demko was playing through an injury early on in the season that eventually sidelined him for a better part of the season. Since returning to the lineup on February 27, he has the fifth-best goals saved above average and in the last week has a .915 save percentage. If you're in need of goaltending help in leagues that start two on a given slate, I think he makes for a good fit.
The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)
Dylan Strome, C, Washington Capitals (Rostered in 32% of ESPN leagues, 61% Fantrax, 34% Yahoo) – We're on a nice run here of Washington Capital Building Blocks, with this week focusing on Strome. I've never really looked at him as a fantasy option, more DFS for a cheaper center at times, but I think for the time being he might just be what you need on your roster.
First off, the good news here and of course its schedule related. The Capitals will be in action on Friday and Sunday, which is great for us as those are the two smaller slates moving into next week with Friday being a four gamer and Sunday featuring seven games. Seven games on a Sunday are typically larger than usual, but it doesn't hurt to have that extra bit of roster insurance to close out a week.
Second here is Strome's production, he has 10 points in his last six games played on a club that as a whole is producing more than they have this season with 27 goals total so far this month. Strome typically moves up and down the Capitals lines but does see power play that helps add to his value moving forward. In leagues with larger benches, I think adding Strome is a great move, he can help with shots on goal and point production has been up in the past week.
The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)
Jesper Bratt, RW, New Jersey Devils (Rostered in 90% of ESPN leagues, 98% of Fantrax, 86% Yahoo) – There's nobody really pushing him out of his spot on the Devils second line, so why the Odd Man out? I think the recent game sheets might be alluding to something that could potentially lower his fantasy production moving forward.
Spoilers here, the New Jersey Devils are going to make playoffs and honestly have a real chance to finish in the top spot in the Metropolitan. I like to go through game sheets from time-to-time because if I can't watch a game, I think it gives you an excellent snapshot of what happened in a given contest. With that, here's the time on ice for Bratt in New Jersey's last three games – 14:41, 15:27, 15:13. That's for a player who has averaged near 17:50 on the season.
One thing that might be contributing to Bratt's lower ice-time is that the Devils are trying different things with their lines, which is the smart thing to do here. Rather know what you should and should not roll out now rather than scrambling come playoff time. Devils head coach Lindy Ruff has never been the most fantasy-kind coach, but here I get what New Jersey is trying to do. If you're rostering Bratt he is of course still in consideration to play even if you're between him and another player. Just note that it may be a matter of him having to produce offensively in a shorter amount of game time.
The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)
Matt Duchene, D, Nashville Predators (Rostered in 82% of ESPN leagues, 83% Fantrax, 77% Yahoo) – Oh Nashville. The team I never really know how to draft or roster in DFS (outside of Roman Josi and Juuse Saros), there's still some optimism here, but I think Duchene is our Anchor this week.
Duchene's play hasn't been great lately with no points in his last three games and just one in the previous six. I don't think it's a product of his play on the ice, but rather, the laundry list of players surrounding him that are currently off this Nashville roster now for one reason or another. At some point this is going to add up and unfortunately this has come at a bad time for Duchene to close out the regular season.
It's tough to predict just what the Nashville lines are going to look like, but currently Duchene is across from Philip Tomasino, who has been fine but a downgrade from Forsberg lining up on his opposite wing. You can look at this is maybe a positive that Duchene is without question now the trigger man on this line for shots on goal, but I don't see a scenario where that line is going to be particularly hard to single out and shutdown. If you're rostering Duchene down the stretch here, he may be worth a start if you have no other options, but I think if you're between him and another player than he might be better suited on your bench.
Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)
This period runs through March 17 to March 29
Tampa Bay – Tampa is a Love 'Em coming up again with two games against Montreal on the schedule. I know Tampa's recent struggles so to speak, but it's Tampa. The panic meter hasn't budged yet for me.
Colorado – They can't keep getting away with this. I feel like every time Colorado needs rest the have a short week and when there's an opportunity to gain ground in the Central, the schedule gets easier for them. Next week they'll be home against the Blackhawks and will close out the week with two games against the Coyotes.
Minnesota – Was I asleep? Because all of a sudden Minnesota has earned at least a point in 14 straight games. The Wild have a road Philly matchup followed by a home game against Chicago next week.
Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)
Vegas – The Knights go on a western Canada road trip, and I know those are divisional games for them, but ending the trip with a home-and-home against Edmonton is no easy task. They're a Leave 'Em for now.
Toronto – The Leafs will be busy on the schedule which we like to see, but it's not exactly a cake walk. They'll be on a four-game road swing against the Islanders, Panthers, Carolina, and Nashville next week.
Arizona – There wasn't really a consensus third Leave 'Em this week so I'm just looking at the schedule here and it has to be Arizona. Two back-to-back road contests in Winnipeg and Edmonton to start the week followed by a home-and-home against the Avalanche. Plenty of "tank wins" in there, but not exactly running out to roster anyone from Arizona.
