Ramblings: Levi Wins Debut, Pettersson and Robertson Push for 100 (Apr 1)

On April Fool's Day, I promise you facts and even a few opinions and hopefully no tricks.

Devon Levi's debut with the Sabres was a success. In his first NHL game, Levi stopped 31 of 33 shots in picking up a 3-2 overtime win over the Rangers. As I've mentioned earlier, the Sabres have a logjam in net with Eric Comrie, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, and Craig Anderson all looking for starts. Anderson is currently dealing with an upper-body injury, which means that they're down to a three-headed monster. Buffalo's odds of making the playoffs are paper thin, so expect Levi to pick up at least one more start before the end of the season. Over the past five games, the Sabres have used all four goalies.

With a goal on Friday, Jordan Greenway now has the same number of goals in a Buffalo uniform as he did with Minnesota this season. We're talking two goals in nine games with the Sabres, but also just two goals in 45 games with the Wild. His fantasy value has improved in Buffalo, although it was extremely low in Minnesota. He's been used up and down the Sabres' lineup, although on Friday he was with Victor Olofsson and Tyson Jost.

Josh Morrissey missed Friday's game due to an illness. Morrissey has been on the cold list with no points in his last five games and just two points in his last nine games. Because of his recent slump, Morrissey is this week's Anchor in the Looking Ahead article, where Andrew suspected that he might be dealing with something. If you're about to comment that "injury" and "illness" are two different issues, are NHL teams really that forthcoming when it comes to injury reports to begin with?

Morrissey's absence didn't turn out to be a major problem for the Jets, who hung six goals on the Red Wings. Mark Scheifele broke a five-game point drought with a goal and an assist, finally giving fantasy teams something during playoff week. Scheifele's 39 goals this season has turned out to be a career high, although he is on pace for his lowest assist total since his first full season in the NHL (2013-14). He is also on pace to finish under a point per game for the first time in seven seasons.

Blake Wheeler seems to have regressed even harder than Scheifele, although maybe that's to be expected since Wheeler is now 36 and Scheifele is only 30. Wheeler also scored a goal and added an assist on Friday. He had been without a point in his previous seven games, and he had been without a goal in his previous 21 games. That's well over a month without a goal. I mentioned last week that Wheeler is droppable, but perhaps he was due instead.

In case you missed it, the Red Wings recalled Marco Kasper from the Swedish Hockey League. Kasper, the eighth overall pick in the 2022 draft, was not in the lineup for Friday's game. He could make his NHL debut on Sunday against Toronto. See his Dobber Prospects profile for more.

In his push for 100 points, Elias Pettersson has put together a 14-game point streak. With a goal on Friday, Pettersson is now at 96 points. The Canucks have seven games remaining, which should be more than enough time for him to get to 100 points. Prior to that, Pettersson had never cracked 70 points, although it seemed inevitable that the now-24-year-old would smash that number. One key to his success is that he has been using his lethal shot more, averaging more than a shot per game over previous seasons (3.3 SOG/GP compared to 2.4 SOG/GP).

The Canucks have decided to shut down Filip Hronek for the season, as he is still battling a shoulder injury. With Hronek out of the lineup, Quinn Hughes logged just over 30 minutes on Friday. Hughes has 73 points, so he could make a run for 80. Erik Karlsson is the only blueliner with more points than Hughes, and these two are the only defensemen with at least 70 points, although a handful of defensemen could crack 70 before the end of the season.

The Flames have had a tumultuous season, but one player who is performing above expectations is Tyler Toffoli. With two goals on Friday, including the game-winner in overtime, Toffoli has a career high 33 goals, while his 69 points is easily a career high. I'll bet you didn't have Toffoli leading the Flames in scoring, but that's where we are.

Jacob Markstrom has three consecutive wins, but Friday's win qualified as a really bad start. Markstrom allowed four goals on 20 shots and was outplayed by Thatcher Demko, who had to face double the number of shots in this game. Markstrom happened to be on the waiver wire in one of my leagues earlier this week, but I decided to take a pass because of the lack of consistency in both his game and the Flames as a team. Only four goalies have more really bad starts than Markstrom (12). Although Markstrom has proven that he can carry the load as a starter, I wonder if several seasons of heavy usage are starting to catch up on the now 33-year-old.

Wednesday's Flames/Jets matchup is shaping up to be a barn burner. Even though both teams have had their share of struggles recently, both teams also posted huge wins on Friday. At stake is the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Jason Robertson is also pushing for 100 points, and he took a big leap forward toward that milestone on Friday. Robertson scored a goal and added three assists, which takes him all the way to 95 points. In the process, he's also set a Dallas Stars record for most points in a season, breaking Mike Modano's record. In around the same number of games as last season, Robertson has taken 68 more shots, which is nearly a shot per game higher than last season and 1.3 shots higher than two seasons ago. Robertson probably won't get to 50 goals this season, but a 50-goal season could be in his future because he's only 23.

Miro Heiskanen recorded three more assists on Friday. He's had a March to remember with 23 points in just 15 games, which leads all defensemen. He's also taking more than half a shot per game more than last season, although his point contributions still mainly come from assists. Key in his success has been power-play points, which have more than doubled (28 PPP) over last season (11 PPP). With John Klingberg now out of the picture in Dallas, Heiskanen has benefitted from more time on the first unit.

Over his last 14 games, Clayton Keller has 23 points. He has points in all of those games, including an assist on Friday. Since March 5, no one has more points than Keller. Not even McDavid, MacKinnon, or Draisaitl. If judging a player by the value to his team, then perhaps Keller deserves a few Hart Trophy votes – at least if it were only a second-half award. He was less than a point-per-game player in the first half, but he's absolutely exploded in the second half.

Looking for a goalie streamer today? There aren't many confirmed starters for Saturday as I write this, but you could consider Ivan Prosvetov. Although the Coyotes will be playing the second of back-to-backs, they are at their little barn while facing a Sharks team that should finish with better Connor Bedard odds than they will. Prosvetov has allowed just five goals over three games with a stellar .952 SV%. I know that likely won't hold up for a whole season, but you're not picking him up for that (okay, maybe you are if it's an important day). In fact, if neither Linus Ullmark nor Sergei Bobrovsky start on a busy Saturday, I might put my money where my mouth is and start the 24-year-old Prosvetov in a playoff match. Might be a crazy enough idea to work.

For more goalie starts, be sure to check Goalie Post.

The end of the regular season isn't very far away, so get ready for lots and lots and lots of Bedard talk. But instead of that, how about a playoff Bedard highlight?
