DFS Saturday: One-Game Contest Saturday

In all likelihood the remainder of our DFS Saturdays will be relegated to just a one-game slate. For those that want to continue to scratch that fantasy itch, one-game slates typically referred to as "showdowns", are still worthy of playing and can make watching a game even more fun. Transitioning from "classic" style contests to showdown is fairly simple, though the formats vary slightly from site to site, so be sure to read the rules on whichever site you will be playing on. For the purpose of this article, I will focus on DraftKings.

For one-game contests on DraftKings, our nine-man roster is whittled down to just six, which is comprised of a captain and five flex players. Your captain scores points on a 1.5x multiplier, but his salary is also elevated by 1.5x. You can use any positions for your six roster spots, including one or both goalies, but you must roster at least one player from each team in the game. Otherwise, scoring is the same as the classic multi-game slates we are used to.

I find the best strategy in these one-game contests are to build your lineup around how you think the game is going to play out. If you think the Stars are going to win in a blow out, it wouldn't make much sense to roster the Kraken's goaltender. Instead, you'd likely want Jake Oettinger along with several Dallas players in the hopes of picking up the goals and assists they accumulate while scoring. On the flip side, if you think the game could be very low scoring, like 2-1 for example, well in that case you'd likely want to roster the goalies from both teams. The logic behind that is with only a few goals allowed, each goaltender will have a high number of saves and fantasy points and will likely outscore skaters who typically need goals and assists to rack up a big score which isn't going to happen in a 2-1 game.

There will be many opportunities for these one-game contests throughout the remainder of the playoffs, so if you're new to the format, I suggest dabbling in some low-dollar entry fee levels until you get the hang of it at which point you could scale up to some larger contests. With all of this said, here are some options to consider for tonight's game.

Captain Considerations

While this has been a surprisingly high scoring series with six goals or more in all five games, and three games with nine goals, I am going to go against the grain here and build my lineup as if this is going to be a 3-2 Stars overtime win. Given that prediction, I am going to go with Oettinger ($16,200) as my captain. He hasn't been lights out in this series, but I'm expecting the Kraken to get some shots on net as they fight for their playoff lives. If Oettinger is up to the task, he can put up a big fantasy score if he picks up the win and limits the pucks in the back of the net to one or two.

Flex Considerations

It would be tough to imagine a Stars win at the moment that doesn't involve Joe Pavelski ($9,400). He's scored a whopping seven goals through five games of this series and given his constant presence in front of the net; he could add another off a tip or a rebound at any time. After spending up on Oettinger and Pavelski we need to look at a few value options for the rest of the lineup. For me that will be Max Domi ($7,600) and Jamie Benn ($8,800). These two have racked up seven and six points respectively in this series, so we'll ride the hot hands and hope their scoring ways can continue for another game.

After locking in these four players, we have two spots left in our lineup. One of these must be a Seattle player and both need to come in at a cumulative salary at less than $8,000. Some options here to consider are Thomas Harley ($3,200) who has five points in this series, Evgenii Dadonov ($5,800) four points, Tye Kartye ($4,000) three points, and Brandon Tanev ($2,000) two points.
