With the NHL's holiday hiatus and roster freeze now officially in the rearview, you can expect the next four-to-six weeks to be quite busy in terms of NHL and fantasy hockey GMs looking to bolster their lineups as the push toward spring and playoff hockey gets real.
With that said, it's important to monitor the teams most likely to pull the trigger on some moves over the coming month – those moves mean rosters fluctuating, creating fantasy opportunities worthy of consideration. Of course, there really is no telling whether some of these teams with glaring needs actually dip their toes in the trade waters, but let's take a quick peek into a few Eastern Conference clubs that should be shuffling their lineups in the near future.
Carolina Hurricanes
You've heard this one before: The Carolina Hurricanes are eyeing netminders. Realistically, in today's NHL, who isn't?
It's really no secret that Carolina has been disappointing this season and a lot of that has to do with the inability to get consistent goaltending. Of course, Frederik Andersen's blood-clotting issues cleared the way for the duo of veteran Antti Raanta (6-5-1, 3.61 GAA, .854 SV.%) and Pyotr Kochetkov (7-7-0, 2.69 GAA, .894 SV.%) to man the blue paint in Raleigh, but Raanta has been awful and Kochetkov is clearly still getting a feel for NHL-level competition.
Aside from the obvious intriguing fantasy value that the young Russian flaunts, one can't help but feel he's just not quite ready to handle the pressure-cooker-like situation the NHL's postseason push can create – even with the Hurricanes solid all-around blue-line core that allows the least shots-against per game at a stingy 25.6.
Raanta (3.4% on ESPN, 15% on Yahoo) was recalled from Carolina’s AHL affiliate on Tuesday, and given his long standing status as a reliable veteran NHL goalie and Kochetkov's inconsistencies, the likelihood of head coach Rod Brind'Amour giving him another shot at holding down the crease is high. Considering the aforementioned quality of Carolina's rearguards and the fact the Canes only sit three points adrift of second spot in the Metro, Raanta immediately becomes a good week-to-week option should he get another look.
The word's been out for weeks that Carolina was poking around into some insurance options in net, and that could still come to fruition. However, for now, their best option for continuing their climb up the standings is likely in-house with Raanta. Either way, keep your eyes peeled on this Hurricanes goalie situation, someone is going to take the reins and immediately become a strong fantasy option.
Detroit Red Wings
Speaking of struggling teams and goalies, how about these Detroit Red Wings? While Patrick Kane's addition has clearly paid off in terms of his offensive production with five goals and five assists in 10 games, the Wings have struggled overall, posting a 2-7-1 record over the span.
No disrespect to any of Detroit’s netminders, but the three-headed "monster" of Alex Lyon, James Reimer, and Ville Husso is just not going to work long-term. To be clear, this should be Husso's net, but a 3.53 GAA, .893 SV.%, inability to string strong performances together, and injuries have pressed Reimer and Lyon into more action than wanted.
In terms of the Wings making a move, it's been evident general manager Steve Yzerman isn't shy about bringing in fresh bodies and trying new looks. Combine that with the fact that someone will come calling about one of his netminders and Detroit is very much in striking distance in the Atlantic Division, and this Red Wings club is definitely one to watch in terms of pouncing on some potentially newfound fantasy options.
Husso's return from injury warrants fantasy focus, Reimer and Lyon in the meantime warrant the same, and if the Wings do ship out a goalie to add some offensive punch in the top-nine, that move will as well.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Remember only a few months ago when Kyle Dubas swerved on the NHL and Toronto Maple Leafs in one fell swoop by joining the Pittsburgh Penguins, then coming off the top rope by bringing in a number of intriguing pieces and landing Erik Karlsson? Well, things haven't exactly gone to plan for the former Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds general manager and this Penguins bunch. Although, with that said, one can't help but feel the second half of this season is going to be different.
With all the new faces in the lineup, forming chemistry was obviously going to be a potential risk with making so many trades. Time to gel, a healthy Bryan Rust, and getting a little bit more out of Karlsson and fellow new addition Reilly Smith will all be key for this Pittsburgh group's success – so will bringing in one or two more pieces to take this team over the top.
With Sidney Crosby leading the way with yet another stellar campaign of 35 points in 32 games and the window for winning with this core rapidly closing, Dubas is sure to be hitting the phone heavy over the coming weeks looking to bolster this aging lineup. He has the draft capital and with the right salary moves, perhaps like getting someone to eat Jeff Carter's money, this Penguins team has all the pieces to be a serious problem come Cup time.
In terms of fantasy, Reilly Smith (owned at 30% on Yahoo, 10% on Yahoo) is a good second-half sleeper target and despite the club's overall struggles, Tristan Jarry has been pretty solid and should see an uptick in value if the club heads in the direction it should. Jarry makes for a great second-half buy-low target.
