Hello everyone and welcome to the latest edition of Eastern Edge! I'm Eli Feldman.

While there's potential value to roster diversification in fantasy hockey (namely, maximizing games played), nothing hits quite like monopolizing a group of teammates, sitting back, and watching them tear it up together for the benefit of your beloved fantasy team.

With this in mind, let's examine a few of the most effective (fantasy-relevant) forward lines in the Eastern Conference from last season poised for monster seasons ahead (minimum 200 minutes played).

1. Brandon Hagel–Anthony Cirelli–Nikita Kucherov

Although franchise cornerstone Nikita Kucherov spent most of his even-strength minutes alongside Jake Guentzel and Brayden Point last season (600.1 minutes played), the Hagel-Cirelli-Kucherov combo was pure magic all year (246.9 minutes played; 72.1 xGoals%, 1^st among offensive lines).

An unstoppable force, Kucherov relies on his elite playmaking ability and deceptive puck handling to initiate controlled zone entries and create space through misdirection. Cirelli is a defensively responsible centre whose two-way game allows Kuch more offensive freedom. Finally, Hagel is a tenacious forechecker with high-end speed who's an offensive weapon in his own right, having netted 25+ goals each of the past three seasons.

Through their contrasting styles – Kucherov's creativity, Cirelli's two-way game, and Hagel's pace – this trio will continue to electrify Lightning fans whenever they hit the ice together this season.  

• Seth Jarvis–Sebastian Aho–Jackson Blake

Following Jackson Blake's promotion to Carolina's top forward group in the final quarter of last season, the Jarvis-Aho-Blake line quickly established itself as one of the most dynamic and versatile in the NHL (203.9 minutes played; 66.7% xGoals%, 4^th among offensive lines).

Centering the line is Sebastian Aho, Carolina's most consistent offensive driver, who brings elite vision, puck control, and a strong two-way presence. On his left wing, Jarvis has developed into a reliable scoring threat, combining quick hands with relentless energy. Rounding out the line is soon-to-be-sophomore Jackson Blake, a former standout at North Dakota who brings a fresh spark and is often responsible for finding soft spots in coverage and extending plays along the boards.

Like any elite line, what makes this line so effective is its balance – each player brings something slightly different, yet all three play with pace and consistently make quick reads under pressure. With a full season of Jarvis-Aho-Blake hockey on the horizon, a goal storm is brewing in Carolina.

• Carter Verhaeghe–Aleksander Barkov–Sam Reinhart

At the heart of the Florida Panthers' consecutive runs to the Stanley Cup is the team's unstoppable top line comprised of Carter Verhaeghe, Aleksander Barkov, and Sam Reinhart (409 minutes played; 61.6 xGoals%, T-12 among offensive lines).

Barkov's calm presence, elite defensive instincts, and deceptive playmaking anchors the line. Reinhart is one of the NHL's most revered snipers, having netted 25+ goals six times thus far in his career (including a 57-goal explosion two seasons ago). Verhaeghe adds speed and shares Reinhart's shoot-first mentality, consistently driving play wide and creating off the rush.

What sets the Verhaeghe-Barkov-Reinhart trio apart is their ability to blend defensive reliability with offensive pressure. Barkov's ability to win puck battles and exit the zone cleanly complements Verhaeghe's transition game, while Reinhart capitalizes on rebounds and second chances. The line's natural chemistry, willingness to adapt to any game state (whether protecting a lead or generating a critical goal), and ability to elevate their game when the stakes are highest makes the Verhaeghe-Barkov-Reinhart line one of the fiercest lines in the League.

• Tyson Foerster–Noah Cates–Bobby Brink

Despite missing the Playoffs once again last season, the line of Tyson Foerster, Noah Cates, and Bobby Brink was a silver lining for the orange, black, and white (570.9 minutes played; 58.3 xGoals%, T-23 among offensive lines).

Cates anchored the line with his strong two-way game and ability to handle tough defensive assignments. Brink, a cerebral winger with sharp playmaking instincts, excelled at finding passing lanes and keeping plays alive. Foerster brought a shoot-first mentality to create consistent scoring chances and relentless puck pressure.

While none of these players are necessarily household names in the fantasy hockey world, their complementary skillsets made them effective together last season. With uncertainty surrounding Tyson Foerster's health status entering the 2025/2026 NHL season, newly appointed Head Coach Rick Tocchet must be keeping his fingers crossed as he looks to get his new team off to a flying start.

• Dmitri Voronkov–Sean Monahan–Kirill Marchenko

Much to the surprise of the hockey world, the line of Dmitri Voronkov, Sean Monahan, and Kirill Marchenko was among the most effective and entertaining leaguewide last season (293.9 minutes played; 58.1 xGoals%, T-25^th among offensive lines).

When healthy, Monahan brought a steady veteran presence and a high hockey IQ to the line, controlling pace, winning faceoffs, and distributing the puck effectively. To Monahan's left, Voronkov offered a unique mix of physicality and scoring touch. At 6-foot-5, Voronkov used his size to protect the puck down low, create chaos around the net, and wear down defenders on the forecheck. Finally, on the right wing, Marchenko added a scoring flair with a heavy, accurate shot and an instinct for finding soft areas in the slot.

Together, the Voronkov-Monahan-Marchenko trio functioned as a hard-nosed, possession-focused unit that controlled play along the boards and played an effective north-south game, triggering cannon blasts in Columbus all season long.
