Looking Ahead: Keep an Eye on the Goalies

Welcome back all! For a good majority of leagues out there this may be the final week where championships are going to be decided and last-place punishments are going to be determined. For those out there with schedules going into next week, we haven't forgotten about you, and will be there for you next week. Regardless of where you are in your matchup and in fantasy playoffs, there's still hockey left on the board, and we need to make the most of it now more than ever. Plus, hey, it's a full week of NHL slates! The fact that this is something we celebrate should tell you everything you need to know about NHL scheduling as a whole.

The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)

Kevin Lankinen, G, Nashville Predators (Rostered in 1% of ESPN leagues, 10% Fantrax, 2% Yahoo)
– Am I saying that I was continuously refreshing Twitter on Sunday early-afternoon to see if we'd get any information from the Canucks if their starter would be Casey DeSmith or Arturs Silovs? Maybe. This week is championship week for most out there so let's get everyone settled in with a sturdy goaltending situation.

So why Kevin Lankinen here? The Predators play on both Saturday and Sunday this week, so we'd assume that Lankinen would get the Sunday start here, right? Here's what I'm seeing, and this took a little bit of going back. The last time the Predators played a Saturday-Sunday back-to-back was on March 9 and 10 and surprisingly, Lankinen got the Saturday start giving Saros the Sunday. This week the Predators will play the Islanders and Devils, both on the road, so it's not like one really a "weaker" opponent so to speak here, but there is a chance we can capitalize on either start.

If you don't have a goaltender slated to start on Saturday or you're in a league that starts two goaltenders, you may fall into a spot where you can potentially see Lankinen get the nod on Saturday. If not, also a decent scenario, to where Sunday is the smaller slate of the two, where if Lankinen doesn't start on Saturday, you have your Sunday starter set and ready to go.

The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)

Dustin Wolf, G, Calgary Flames (Rostered in 2% of ESPN leagues, 41% Fantrax, 7% Yahoo)
– From one goaltender to another, going to give a shoutout here to Dustin Wolf. I know it might be an out of leftfield pick here for the Building Block, but there's some opportunity here.

When I think goaltending to win a league, I can't say Calgary comes to mind. But it's guys like Wolf that win championships, believe me, as someone who can thank Lars Eller for one of my league wins. This is a Building Block here not so much for this week, but the advantage that he may have next week. The Flames will play four games next week, their opponents include the Sharks, Ducks, and Coyotes. They also play the Kings, but let's just focus in on the three others I mentioned here. My guess here is that Wolf gets at least two of those starts. I'm going to guess he will be in a good position to come away with two wins just adding points to your roster or two wins for those in category leagues.

The game plan here if this is someone you're targeting is to check and see if/when Wolf is announced a game starter and factor that in to your weekly roster. If you're set at goaltender, I get it, and maybe Calgary is just a team you zero in on for position players given their upcoming schedule, but you need starts Wolf may be a fantasy option.

The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)

Sean Couturier, C, Philadelphia Flyers (Rostered in 29% of ESPN leagues, 47% Fantrax, 11% Yahoo)
– In my main league we always joke about which player out there will go undrafted, but subsequently added and dropped the most throughout the fantasy season. In years past this honor has gone to guys like Matt Dumba, Zach Parise, I think one year Matt Duchene was there, but this season ours will go out to Sean Couturier at six times.

To go along with up and down fantasy value and seemingly how easily he can be replaced, we have to acknowledge the risk of now getting healthy-scratched. "Real" hockey aside and just how perplexing those decisions are/were, for fantasy there's worry here if you're still rostering him. Let alone the ice time has dropped substantially to now go along with an injury in Monday's game against the Islanders. If you have Couturier on your roster, I think the value here only comes if you are in a larger field league. If not it might be tough to justify going forward.

The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)

Tristan Jarry, G, Pittsburgh Penguins (Rostered in 75% of ESPN leagues, 91%, Fantrax, 75% Yahoo)
– For those keeping score at home, last week Tristan Jarry was my Odd-Man Out and usually I like to keep things fresh and write about different players from week-to-week. I'm in the championship in my main league where earlier this week Jarry is confirmed for a Monday start where 18 minutes before lock he's scratched. Congratulations Jarry, you are the Anchor of the week and buyer beware for next season.

I've written here and over at GoaliePost defending Jarry as a decent fantasy starter in the past, but I don't think that holds true anymore just looking at the body of work (or lack thereof) this past month with the Pens looking more to Alex Nedeljkovic for starts in net, much like they tried to do in previous seasons with Casey DeSmith. I can absolutely see to where next season at your draft he's going to be available to draft, but this is a player that is no longer an everyday goaltender on your club. This has to be more situational or an Immediate Fix type of goaltender for a spot start here or there. Somehow this season Jarry had six shutout games which is tied first in the NHL, but his GSAA ranks 46th in the league.

I always say be by your phone at lock, and though I know it's tedious, it's true. If you're on ESPN fantasy for baseball your phone goes off like a morning alarm if George Springer isn't starting but is in your lineup, for the NHL that's not the case and I know that can be the same on other platforms. I try to check my leagues around a half hour out but sometimes even that is too much time as coaches may still be speaking to the media, or the clubs haven't gone out for warmups (usually 11-12 minutes before lock). Again, it's tedious, and sometimes I get that there's no way to be by your phone each day that there's games but sometimes it really is the difference in a matchup or even a championship. Sigh.

Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)

This period runs through April 5 – April 17

Calgary – As listed above, the Flames will see San Jose, Anaheim, and Arizona next week all in a row. Playing in the Western Conference has its perks.

Edmonton
– We love a homestand! The Oilers will start a string of four games at home next week.

Toronto
– The Leafs next four opponents look like this: Montreal, New Jersey twice, and Pittsburgh. Now, you could read that as Montreal who seems to always give them fits, New Jersey who just played them well with Jake Allen standing on his head, and a Pittsburgh team that has its moments. I'm going to zag here and read that as a Montreal club that takes more penalties than they should, and New Jersey and Pittsburgh who might as well be making tee-times already. Auston Matthews, I'm here to tell you 70 goals is in reach.

Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)

Boston
– Only two games on the schedule upcoming for the B's next week. They'll be a Leave 'Em for now.

Columbus
– I hate to kick the Jackets here this late in the season, but they'll be on the road for the Florida road trip and have to come back against the Preds on the road. Sorry fellas, leave 'em.

Chicago
– Although I don't want to kick Columbus here while they're down I feel fine about doing it to this Hawks club. If you scroll down the list below, they repeatedly show up as a Steer Clear. Trust in the chart. Trust in the process.
