Ramblings: Updates on Laine, Boeser, Broberg, and Zub; Hagel’s Huge Night; Hischier’s Hatty; Carolina’s Comeback – November 26

Michael Clifford

2024-11-26

It was a busy day in Montreal news as winger Joshua Roy was recalled from the AHL. Despite making it to the NHL last season, he started the 2024-25 campaign in Laval with eight goals and eight assists in 16 games, averaging 3.4 shots per game. At practice on Monday, he was skating on Jake Evans's line:

Attentive readers will notice Patrik Laine's name in those line rushes. He was at practice in a full-contact jersey for the first time since his preseason knee injury, but don't expect him back right away:

Montreal has three road games this week after Tuesday night, but is back home against the Islanders next Tuesday. Circle that date.

*

Seth Jarvis was back in the lineup for Carolina on Monday night after missing seven games with an upper-body injury. He was back on the top power play unit (sorry, Jackson Blake enthusiasts), but was on the second line with Jack Drury and Martin Necas. It is a wonder how long that lasts, but Drury has looked impressive, for the most part, over the last 13 months.

*

Chris Kreider was out of the lineup for New York on Monday night, and is considered day-to-day: https://x.com/vzmercogliano/status/1861069880331522159

With Kreider out, the Artemi Panarin line stayed together but Alexis Lafreniere was moved to the top PP unit. Fantasy managers everywhere are rejoicing.

*

Bad news for Ottawa and Artem Zub:

Zub had just returned a couple weeks ago from a concussion, and now this. Just a rough go for the defenceman this season.

*

For good news on the defensive front, Philip Broberg is skating:

Broberg started thee season with nine points in 12 games before a lower-body injury knocked him out of action a few weeks ago. He wasn't in the lineup Monday so the next chance he has to return is Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

*

Brock Boeser looks ready to go for Vancouver:

Boeser traveled with the team and seems ready to return for Tuesday night's game in Boston. They do have a back-to-back with a game Wednesday night in Pittsburgh, and maybe they don't want to push things along too quickly, so be sure to double-check on his status throughout the day.

*

It seems as if Yaroslav Askarov is still with San Jose:

We have seen teams carry three goalies, so maybe that's the plan here, and he did get the start on Monday night. Given the way goaltending is going for Carolina and Colorado, it’s probably not long until the Sharks trade one of their NHL goalies and clear the way for Askarov.

*

Patrick Kane was a scratch for Detroit on Monday. He had a maintenance day for Sunday's practice and the coach thought he needed more time to rest, so it was Jonatan Berggren on the second line for the Red Wings on Tuesday.

*

Kirill Kaprizov was back in the lineup for Minnesota on Monday night. He took that hard hit to the knee a couple games ago, missed a game on the weekend, but returned to the ice for Minnesota's matchup with Winnipeg.

*

An update on Edmonton's Zach Hyman and Viktor Arvidsson:

Luckily for Edmonton, they only have two games this week with a back-to-back in Utah and Colorado on the weekend.

I was really looking forward to watching the Colorado-Tampa Bay game on Monday night, but that excitement ran out quickly.

To start with, Jonathan Drouin missed the game with an upper-body injury. No further updates as of now, but Mikko Rantanen was back on the top line, Ivan Ivan jumped to Casey Mittelstadt's line, and Artturi Lehkonen was back on the power play.

Tampa Bay absolutely pasted Colorado by an 8-2 margin. This game was over after 20 minutes with the Lightning jumping out to a 5-1 lead after the first period. Justus Annunen started the game, gave up three goals in 10 minutes, ceded the net to Alexandar Georgiev, and he gave up three goals in the next 30 minutes, and then Annunen was back in net for the third period. It was that kind of night.

It is easier to just do this in bullet-point form:

  • Brandon Hagel: Five assists (one SH, two PP), five shots, and a block.
  • Nikita Kucherov: One goal, two assists (both PP), and four shots.
  • Jake Guentzel: Two goals (One PP), two shots, one block, and one hit.
  • Nick Perbix: One goal, one assist, two shots, four PIMs, and two hits.

Anthony Cirelli, Mikey Eyssimont, Brayden Point, and Luke Glendening had the other goals.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 23 of 25 shots for the win.

Ivan scored both goals for Colorado, totaling five shots.

Annunen allowed a total of five goals on 16 shots while Georgiev allowed three on 17.

In their first game with new (old) coach Jim Montgomery behind the bench, the St. Louis Blues went into Madison Square Garden and beat the New York Rangers 5-2. Zach Bolduc scored his first goal of the season in the second period and then scored his second goal of the season in the third period. It is the first two-goal game of his NHL career. He finished the game with seven shots, a block, and four PIMs.

Brayden Schenn had a goal and an assist with seven hits , Dylan Holloway had a pair of helpers with three shots and a hit, and both Pavel Buchnevich and Jordan Kyrou added to their goal totals. Buchnevich had four shots and four hits, the first time he's had more than two hits in a game since March 9th.

Colton Parayko stuffed the stat sheet with an assist, two shots, three blocks, and a hit.

Joel Hofer stopped 27 of 29 shots in the win.

Will Cuylle scored both goals for the Rangers, totaling three shots, two PIMs, and six hits. His magnificent multi-cat season continues unabated.

Kaapo Kakko had an assist with five shots and a hit.

Igor Shesterkin gave up four goals on 42 shots. It was the fourth time in 15 games he's faced at least 40 shots, and third time this month.

Washington handed Florida their sixth loss in their last seven games, taking their matchup on Monday night 4-1. The star was Jakob Chychrun, who had a goal (PP), two assists, three shots, three blocks, and a hit. He is now up to 11 points in 16 games, and has just that one power play point in that total.

Lars Eller scored a pair of goals for the Capitals, his first and second goals during his second stint with the team. He is up to six goals in 23 games on the season, which is pretty good production for a guy skating a little over 15 minutes a night.

Ivan Miroshnichenko had the other Washington tally.

Niko Mikkola had the lone goal for the Panthers. He is up to 10 points in 22 games on the season.

Logan Thompson stopped 21 of 22 shots for the win while counterpart Spencer Knight allowed two goals on 29 shots in the loss.

*

After a scorching October, Nico Hischier had been having a quiet November with zero goals and five assists in nine games. That changed on Monday night as he scored a natural hat trick in the second period, one of those goals coming on the power play, as New Jersey took a 5-2 win at home to Nashville. Hischier finished the game with six shots and he's back on a point-per-game pace with 13 goals and 11 assists in 24 games.

Erik Haula and Justin Dowling had the other goals for the Devils.

Jonathan Kovacevic had two assists, three shots, and three hits for a solid multi-cat night.

Dougie Hamilton didn't get on the scoresheet but had five shots, a block, and four hits to help his peripherals. He is on pace to surpass 200 combined hits and blocks for the first time since 2018-19.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 19 of 21 shots for his 10th win of the season.

Filip Forsberg and Zachary L'Heureux scored the goals for Nashville. That tally broke a six-game goalless streak for Forsberg.

Juuse Saros allowed four goals on 30 shots and was pulled after the second period.

Nashville also made news earlier in the day, trading Philip Tomasino to Pittsburgh for a fourth-round pick in 2027. Tomasino has had good per-minute production at times for the Predators, and it's a wonder if he'll get a top-6 role with the Penguins. Surely, things can't go worse for Pittsburgh, but that also seems to be the case for Nashville and yet here we are.

The game of the night was likely between Dallas and Carolina. The Stars got out to a 3-1 lead halfway through the second period but Carolina scored five third-period goals to escape with the improbable 6-4 win. I put this game on after the Lightning started to stomp out the Avalanche and it was a wild, wild third period to watch.

Jarvis made a big impact in his return scoring a short-handed goal, assisting on Sebastian Aho's goal, and then registering a power play helper on a late Martin Necas goal. Jarvis had those three points to go with three shots and five hits. It is safe to say he was fired up.

Aho had that goal and three apples of his own (one PP, one SH), two shots, and a hit. Necas had a goal and an assist, both on the power play, to go with three shots and a pair of hits.

Andrei Svechnikov scored an empty netter, totaling four shots and four hits.

Shayne Gostisbehere had a goal (PP), an assist (PP), three shots, a block, and two PIMs.

Brent Burns scored his first goal of the year, managing two shots and one block.

Mason Marchment, Tyler Seguin, and Miro Heiskanen each had a goal and an assist. That makes four goals in seven games for the defenceman.

Spencer Martin hung on for the win, allowing four goals on 19 shots.

Jake Oettinger took the loss, allowing five goals on 33 shots.

*

Philadelphia had a 4-2 lead over Vegas late in the second period but Pavel Dorofeyev scored a power play goal to pull the Golden Knights within one, and Tanner Pearson scored in the third period to tie things up 4-4. Vegas would eventually take a 5-4 win in the shootout, and give them three straight wins to open their road trip.

Both Jack Eichel and Ivan Barbashev had a goal and an assist in the win. That makes four goals and 15 points in nine games for Eichel since Mark Stone's injury. He is just having an unreal season; the type of season fantasy owners have been waiting years for.

Zach Whitecloud and Alex Pietrangelo were not in the lineup for Vegas, and the overtime meant over 27 minutes of ice time for both Brayden McNabb and Shea Theodore. Theodore had a power play assist, two shots, a block, and two PIMs in the win.

Ilya Samsonov stopped 31 of 35 shots for the win.

Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist for the Flyers in the loss. Matvei Michkov, Sean Couturier, and Emil Andrae had the other tallies. Michkov had four total shots in the game, his first four-shot game since October 15th.

Ivan Fedotov took the shootout loss, allowing four goals on 30 shots.

*

Detroit managed just their fifth multi-goal win of the season thanks to a 4-2 victory in New York over the Islanders. Both Simon Edvinsson and Moritz Seider had a goal and an assist to lead the way for the Red Wings. Edvinsson had two PIMs and a hit to go with those two points and Seider had three shots and a hit in nearly 25 minutes of ice time.

Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin had the other markers for Detroit. Larkin had four total shots and four PIMs, and he's on pace for a 47-goal season. He's shooting over 22%, so that will come down, but a great goal-scoring start for him.

Alex Lyon stopped 27 of 29 shots for his fourth win of the season.

Kyle Palmieri and Anders Lee had the goals for New York. Lee finished with three shots, four PIMs, and a hit.

Semyon Varlamov allowed three goals on 20 shots for the loss.

Adam Gaudette was moved to the top line for Ottawa's game on Monday night, skating with Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle. It didn't result in a 5-on-5 goal with them, but he did score just as a power play was expiring, and he's now up to nine goals in 20 games on the season. Sure, he's shooting 32.1%, but considering he had nine goals in his previous 99 games, it's been a great start and really nice to see after the injury issues he's had in his career.

Brady Tkachuk (PP), Drake Batherson (PP), and Cole Reinhardt had the other tallies. For Reinhardt, it was the first NHL goal for the sixth-round pick from 2020. Just getting to the NHL as a sixth-round pick is improbable enough, but a goal in his fourth career NHL game is something else entirely. Congrats to him.

Tkachuk finished the game with a goal, assist (PP), five shots, two PIMs, and two hits. On the season, his 82-game paces are now 43 goals, 47 assists, 195 PIMs, 340 shots, 39 blocks, 367 hits, and 39 power play points. Whether he keeps it up or not… hoo boy is he off to a great start.

Batherson also had a goal and assist, both on the power play, to go with three shots, a block, and five hits. He is now over a point-per-game pace with 22 in 21 contests.

Jake Sanderson had a pair of assists, one on the PP, to go with three shots, and a block.

Anton Forsberg stopped 24 of 27 shots in the win.

Jonathan Huberdeau (PP), Yegor Sharangovich, and Nazem Kadri scored for Calgary. Sharangovich has missed some time this year, but does have five goals in 15 games. Not quite his 31-goal pace from last season, but not far off, and his shot rate is up from 2.2 per game to 3.3 per game.

Dustin Wolf allowed four goals on 30 shots for his first regulation loss since October.

*

Winnipeg went into Minnesota and came out with a 4-1 win. The depth came through in a big way as Alex Iafallo had two goals (one on the PP), Nino Niederreiter got in the goal column, and Adam Lowry added an empty netter to seal the victory. It might be because of the start of other players, but that was Niederreiter's ninth goal of the season in his 22nd game. He didn't score his ninth goal of last season until Game 32, and considering he's over two hits and two shots per game, the multi-cat value has been stellar through the early portion of the season.

Neal Pionk had two assists (one on the PP), three shots, a block, and two hits. He is up to six power play points in his 22 appearances after having just eight power play points in 82 outings last season. A great start from him, along with the rest of the team.

Ville Heinola made his season debut for Winnipeg due to the injuries to Dylan Samberg and Logan Stanley. Heinola didn't play much – 12:14 in ice time – but had two shots and a hit. Winnipeg carried an 8-3 shot advantage at 5-on-5 with he and defence partner Colin Miller on the ice, so, not a bad debut for Heinola as he works his way back from ankle surgery.

Connor Hellebuyck was tremendous in net again, stopping 43 of 44 shots faced for the win. He has easily been the best fantasy goalie so far in 2024-25 and, if this keeps up, is on his way to his third Vezina Trophy.

Jake Middleton scored Minnesota's lone goal. He managed five shots, four PIMs, and a hit. Middleton has been very stellar in multi-cat formats this season with four goals, eight assists, 36 shots, 48 blocks, and 28 hits in 21 games.

Filip Gustavsson allowed three goals on 31 shots for the loss. It is notable that he has allowed more than three goals just twice in his starts, and being able to keep his team in almost every game they play is a nice rebound for him from last season.

For posterity, Kaprizov played 23:08 and registered five shots.

Seattle scored a pair of goals 24 seconds apart to start the third period, and that was enough to lift the Kraken to a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night.

After being a healthy scratch for three games, Shane Wright was back in the lineup and on the 'third' line with Eeli Tovlanen and Oliver Bjorkstrand. Wright scored Seattle's first goal of the game and assisted on Brandon Montour's third-period tally, which held up as the game-winner. Wright has just two goals and two assists in 19 games, but has looked better than those numbers show in many of those 19 games. It is a process, but he's working his way to becoming at least a second-line NHL centre.

Andre Burakovsky had the other tally for the Kraken.

Montour's goal was his seventh of the season after scoring eight in 66 games last season. He is up to 15 points, 69 shots, 32 hits, and 25 blocks in 21 games.

Ryker Evans had a pair of helpers to go with two shots and a hit. He has 13 points in 22 games this season, and has 22 points in 58 career games (averaging under 20 minutes a game in those 58 appearances).

Joey Daccord stopped 21 of 23 shots for the win, his 10th of the season.

Frank Vatrano and Trevor Zegras scored the goals for the Ducks. Vatrano had five shots, five hits, and a block to go with that goal. He has just three markers on the season, and eight total points, but he's still shooting under 5%. Considering he's averaging 3.2 shots and 2.7 hits per game, he will be a great multi-cat asset once that shooting percentage improves.

Olen Zellweger had an assist, two shots, two blocks, two PIMs, and two hits. He is up to 19 points in 19 games, totaling 44 shots, 19 blocks, and 13 hits on the campaign. Pretty good for a guy that turned 21 years old in September.

Lukas Dostal took the loss, allowing three goals on 28 shots.

Leo Carlsson left the game at the end of the second period after being hit into the net. More updates as we get them.

*

San Jose had no Mikael Granlund on Monday night, and they didn't really need him as they put a 7-2 beatdown on Los Angeles. It was a huge game for Macklin Celebrini with two goals (one PP), one assist, four shots, two blocks, two PIMs, and two hits. He is up to six goals and four assists in 12 games, averaging 3.3 shots, 0.67 blocks, and 0.58 hits per game. Not a bad rookie effort even with the injury that kept him out for nearly a month.

Alex Wennberg (PP), Fabian Zetterlund, Nico Sturm (in his first game since returning from injury), Luke Kunin, and Timothy Liljegren had the other goals for the Sharks. Liljegren finished with three shots and a hit in the win.

William Eklund and Will Smith both had a pair of helpers, each with one on the power play. Eklund is up to 15 assists in 23 games after posting just 29 assists in 80 games last season.

Askarov stopped 22 of 24 shots for the win and even assisted on Sturm's goal.

Anze Kopitar scored one goal for the Kings while Brandt Clarke got the other. Adrian Kempe assisted on both goals, totaling four shots, two PIMs, and a hit.

David Rittich was in net for all seven goals against, including five in the third period, in the loss.
