Ramblings: Updates on Laine, Boeser, Broberg, and Zub; Hagel’s Huge Night; Hischier’s Hatty; Carolina’s Comeback – November 26

It was a busy day in Montreal news as winger Joshua Roy was recalled from the AHL. Despite making it to the NHL last season, he started the 2024-25 campaign in Laval with eight goals and eight assists in 16 games, averaging 3.4 shots per game. At practice on Monday, he was skating on Jake Evans's line:
Attentive readers will notice Patrik Laine's name in those line rushes. He was at practice in a full-contact jersey for the first time since his preseason knee injury, but don't expect him back right away:
Montreal has three road games this week after Tuesday night, but is back home against the Islanders next Tuesday. Circle that date.

Seth Jarvis was back in the lineup for Carolina on Monday night after missing seven games with an upper-body injury. He was back on the top power play unit (sorry, Jackson Blake enthusiasts), but was on the second line with Jack Drury and Martin Necas. It is a wonder how long that lasts, but Drury has looked impressive, for the most part, over the last 13 months.
*
Chris Kreider was out of the lineup for New York on Monday night, and is considered day-to-day: https://x.com/vzmercogliano/status/1861069880331522159
With Kreider out, the Artemi Panarin line stayed together but Alexis Lafreniere was moved to the top PP unit. Fantasy managers everywhere are rejoicing.

Bad news for Ottawa and Artem Zub:
Zub had just returned a couple weeks ago from a concussion, and now this. Just a rough go for the defenceman this season.
*
For good news on the defensive front, Philip Broberg is skating:
Broberg started thee season with nine points in 12 games before a lower-body injury knocked him out of action a few weeks ago. He wasn't in the lineup Monday so the next chance he has to return is Wednesday night in Philadelphia.
*
Brock Boeser looks ready to go for Vancouver:
Boeser traveled with the team and seems ready to return for Tuesday night's game in Boston. They do have a back-to-back with a game Wednesday night in Pittsburgh, and maybe they don't want to push things along too quickly, so be sure to double-check on his status throughout the day.
*
It seems as if Yaroslav Askarov is still with San Jose:
We have seen teams carry three goalies, so maybe that's the plan here, and he did get the start on Monday night. Given the way goaltending is going for Carolina and Colorado, it’s probably not long until the Sharks trade one of their NHL goalies and clear the way for Askarov.
*
Patrick Kane was a scratch for Detroit on Monday. He had a maintenance day for Sunday's practice and the coach thought he needed more time to rest, so it was Jonatan Berggren on the second line for the Red Wings on Tuesday.
*
Kirill Kaprizov was back in the lineup for Minnesota on Monday night. He took that hard hit to the knee a couple games ago, missed a game on the weekend, but returned to the ice for Minnesota's matchup with Winnipeg.
*
An update on Edmonton's Zach Hyman and Viktor Arvidsson:
Luckily for Edmonton, they only have two games this week with a back-to-back in Utah and Colorado on the weekend.

I was really looking forward to watching the Colorado-Tampa Bay game on Monday night, but that excitement ran out quickly.
To start with, Jonathan Drouin missed the game with an upper-body injury. No further updates as of now, but Mikko Rantanen was back on the top line, Ivan Ivan jumped to Casey Mittelstadt's line, and Artturi Lehkonen was back on the power play.
Tampa Bay absolutely pasted Colorado by an 8-2 margin. This game was over after 20 minutes with the Lightning jumping out to a 5-1 lead after the first period. Justus Annunen started the game, gave up three goals in 10 minutes, ceded the net to Alexandar Georgiev, and he gave up three goals in the next 30 minutes, and then Annunen was back in net for the third period. It was that kind of night.
It is easier to just do this in bullet-point form:
- Brandon Hagel: Five assists (one SH, two PP), five shots, and a block.
- Nikita Kucherov: One goal, two assists (both PP), and four shots.
- Jake Guentzel: Two goals (One PP), two shots, one block, and one hit.
- Nick Perbix: One goal, one assist, two shots, four PIMs, and two hits.
Anthony Cirelli, Mikey Eyssimont, Brayden Point, and Luke Glendening had the other goals.
Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 23 of 25 shots for the win.
Ivan scored both goals for Colorado, totaling five shots.
Annunen allowed a total of five goals on 16 shots while Georgiev allowed three on 17.

In their first game with new (old) coach Jim Montgomery behind the bench, the St. Louis Blues went into Madison Square Garden and beat the New York Rangers 5-2. Zach Bolduc scored his first goal of the season in the second period and then scored his second goal of the season in the third period. It is the first two-goal game of his NHL career. He finished the game with seven shots, a block, and four PIMs.
Brayden Schenn had a goal and an assist with seven hits , Dylan Holloway had a pair of helpers with three shots and a hit, and both Pavel Buchnevich and Jordan Kyrou added to their goal totals. Buchnevich had four shots and four hits, the first time he's had more than two hits in a game since March 9th.
Colton Parayko stuffed the stat sheet with an assist, two shots, three blocks, and a hit.
Joel Hofer stopped 27 of 29 shots in the win.
Will Cuylle scored both goals for the Rangers, totaling three shots, two PIMs, and six hits. His magnificent multi-cat season continues unabated.
Kaapo Kakko had an assist with five shots and a hit.
Igor Shesterkin gave up four goals on 42 shots. It was the fourth time in 15 games he's faced at least 40 shots, and third time this month.

Washington handed Florida their sixth loss in their last seven games, taking their matchup on Monday night 4-1. The star was Jakob Chychrun, who had a goal (PP), two assists, three shots, three blocks, and a hit. He is now up to 11 points in 16 games, and has just that one power play point in that total.
Lars Eller scored a pair of goals for the Capitals, his first and second goals during his second stint with the team. He is up to six goals in 23 games on the season, which is pretty good production for a guy skating a little over 15 minutes a night.
Ivan Miroshnichenko had the other Washington tally.
Niko Mikkola had the lone goal for the Panthers. He is up to 10 points in 22 games on the season.
Logan Thompson stopped 21 of 22 shots for the win while counterpart Spencer Knight allowed two goals on 29 shots in the loss.

After a scorching October, Nico Hischier had been having a quiet November with zero goals and five assists in nine games. That changed on Monday night as he scored a natural hat trick in the second period, one of those goals coming on the power play, as New Jersey took a 5-2 win at home to Nashville. Hischier finished the game with six shots and he's back on a point-per-game pace with 13 goals and 11 assists in 24 games.
Erik Haula and Justin Dowling had the other goals for the Devils.
Jonathan Kovacevic had two assists, three shots, and three hits for a solid multi-cat night.
Dougie Hamilton didn't get on the scoresheet but had five shots, a block, and four hits to help his peripherals. He is on pace to surpass 200 combined hits and blocks for the first time since 2018-19.
Jacob Markstrom stopped 19 of 21 shots for his 10th win of the season.
Filip Forsberg and Zachary L'Heureux scored the goals for Nashville. That tally broke a six-game goalless streak for Forsberg.
Juuse Saros allowed four goals on 30 shots and was pulled after the second period.
Nashville also made news earlier in the day, trading Philip Tomasino to Pittsburgh for a fourth-round pick in 2027. Tomasino has had good per-minute production at times for the Predators, and it's a wonder if he'll get a top-6 role with the Penguins. Surely, things can't go worse for Pittsburgh, but that also seems to be the case for Nashville and yet here we are.

The game of the night was likely between Dallas and Carolina. The Stars got out to a 3-1 lead halfway through the second period but Carolina scored five third-period goals to escape with the improbable 6-4 win. I put this game on after the Lightning started to stomp out the Avalanche and it was a wild, wild third period to watch.
Jarvis made a big impact in his return scoring a short-handed goal, assisting on Sebastian Aho's goal, and then registering a power play helper on a late Martin Necas goal. Jarvis had those three points to go with three shots and five hits. It is safe to say he was fired up.
Aho had that goal and three apples of his own (one PP, one SH), two shots, and a hit. Necas had a goal and an assist, both on the power play, to go with three shots and a pair of hits.
Andrei Svechnikov scored an empty netter, totaling four shots and four hits.
Shayne Gostisbehere had a goal (PP), an assist (PP), three shots, a block, and two PIMs.
Brent Burns scored his first goal of the year, managing two shots and one block.
Mason Marchment, Tyler Seguin, and Miro Heiskanen each had a goal and an assist. That makes four goals in seven games for the defenceman.
Spencer Martin hung on for the win, allowing four goals on 19 shots.
Jake Oettinger took the loss, allowing five goals on 33 shots.

Philadelphia had a 4-2 lead over Vegas late in the second period but Pavel Dorofeyev scored a power play goal to pull the Golden Knights within one, and Tanner Pearson scored in the third period to tie things up 4-4. Vegas would eventually take a 5-4 win in the shootout, and give them three straight wins to open their road trip.
Both Jack Eichel and Ivan Barbashev had a goal and an assist in the win. That makes four goals and 15 points in nine games for Eichel since Mark Stone's injury. He is just having an unreal season; the type of season fantasy owners have been waiting years for.
Zach Whitecloud and Alex Pietrangelo were not in the lineup for Vegas, and the overtime meant over 27 minutes of ice time for both Brayden McNabb and Shea Theodore. Theodore had a power play assist, two shots, a block, and two PIMs in the win.
Ilya Samsonov stopped 31 of 35 shots for the win.
Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist for the Flyers in the loss. Matvei Michkov, Sean Couturier, and Emil Andrae had the other tallies. Michkov had four total shots in the game, his first four-shot game since October 15th.
Ivan Fedotov took the shootout loss, allowing four goals on 30 shots.

The rest of the games will be updated in the morning.
