With no games on Sunday, I thought we could spend today's Ramblings looking at some interesting stats so far in 2025. Here are 16 to keep in mind before the fantasy campaign resumes on Saturday!
11.92
That's the number of goals saved above expected by Spencer Knight in 2025 (via EvolvingHockey). It also happens to be the league's third highest GSAx during this timeframe. In the same span, Sergei Bobrovsky sports a much more modest 2.44 GSAx. Bob is still the starter in Florida, but don't be surprised to see Knight steal a few starts down the stretch based on his strong play of late.
58%
That's the share of Calgary's total power-play time that Matt Coronato is seeing. It’s significant because he has five PPPs through 18 games in the new year. To give you some perspective, prior to this stretch, he was seeing 40% of Calgary's time with the man advantage and posted a modest seven PPPs through 32 games. This isn't the only area of growth for Coronato, who has been trusted with more responsibility because of his strong play, with his ice time increasing from 16:35 to 18:02 between the 2024 and 2025 portions of this season. With more opportunity he's been able to use his strong shot more frequently, going from 2.2 to 2.7 shots per game.
It's encouraging to see Coronato produce so much offense despite being part of the Flames' shutdown line for most of the season. Alongside Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman, Coronato outscored opponents 21 to 13 even though he started most of his shifts in the defensive zone. He earned a promotion to the top line beside Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau shortly before the 4 Nations Face-Off break and should enjoy some more offensive freedom in that role when the campaign resumes. Currently rostered in just 6% of Yahoo Leagues, Coronato could be a sneaky smart addition to your fantasy roster down the stretch.
6.3%
That's Carolina's power-play success rate since the new calendar year began. It's a drastic drop off for a team that ranked fifth in the league with a 25.6% success rate from October to December. Desperate to shake things up, the Canes swapped Shayne Gostisbehere with a nearly 40-year-old Brent Burns shortly before the 4 Nations Face-Off break. We'll see how long that lasts, but I think there's reason to believe brighter days are ahead. The Hurricanes hold a comically low PP shooting percentage of 4.55% during this stretch (via Natural Stat Trick), which suggests they've suffered from a bit of bad luck that probably won't last forever. It's natural to question whether the Mikko Rantanen–Martin Necas trade threw off the team's chemistry here, but we're talking about the power play being bad over an 18-game sample and only six of those games were played after the trade. Sure, it might take some time to integrate Rantanen into the top unit, but I don't think you can justify blaming this on him right now.
0.94
That's how many points per game Ryan Donato has in 2025. Donato's 16 points through 17 games matches that of superstar teammate Connor Bedard, who he has skated beside frequently during this stretch. Donato provides good value in multicategory leagues, chipping in a decent number of shots, hits and faceoff wins each game. The Blackhawks have a lot of light-night games between now and the end of the season, so Donato could be an easy player to grab from the waiver wire and integrate into your lineup down the stretch.
6.65
That's the number of goals saved below expected that Juuse Saros holds in 2025 (via Evolving Hockey). Based on that metric, Saros has been the league's second worst goalie in the calendar year. It's particularly disheartening because Nashville has been playing well during this stretch, so there's nowhere to shift the blame here. Any hope of bouncing back on the international stage has gone out the window as Saros just lost his starting role on Team Finland to Kevin Lankinen. Despite Saros' pedigree, I wouldn't blame you for benching him in fantasy formats until he shows some consistency.
3.33
The number of shots per game Brandon Hagel is averaging in 2025. He's been able to put more pucks on net thanks to more opportunity as he's seeing two more minutes of ice time compared to last year.
2
That's how many points Anthony Duclair has through 16 appearances in 2025. Due to injuries, he and fellow smooth skater Mathew Barzal haven't had a chance to get properly acquainted this season. To make matters worse, Duclair isn't being used in a role conducive to offense as he's started just 45% of his shifts in the offensive zone. During his most productive years with the Panthers, that number was up at 55-62%.
11
The league-leading number of power-play points that Mark Stone has put up in 2025. He's benefitted from playing on the league's second-best power play this season as 21 of his 49 points have come with the man advantage. With Shea Theodore sidelined long term there could be some turbulence ahead for Vegas' PP, which could spell trouble for members of the top unit like Stone.
23.1
The league-low shots per game that Chicago is averaging in 2025. If you need your goalie to rack up some saves, you probably don't want them to be facing the Blackhawks. On the flip side, Chicago is also allowing the most shots per game (36.3), so if you're in the market for shots on any given night, find a skater suiting up against the Blackhawks.
3.58
That's Boston's expected goals per 60 in 2025 – the league's second highest xGA/60 during this timeframe (via Natural Stat Trick). Jeremy Swayman has been playing well but the defense in front of him hasn't, which has left the Bruins' top netminder with a lacklustre GAA and SV%.
20:21
The average ice time for sophomore sensation Logan Cooley in 2025, which ranks top 20 among league skaters during this stretch. It represents a big jump from the 15:49 he skated as a rookie. Cooley has earned every second of increased opportunity with his stellar play, highlighted by an impressive 71-point pace this season. He's currently out indefinitely with a lower-body injury but Utah said he'd be re-evaluated following the 4 Nations Face-Off. Keep an eye out for that update as you'd be able to snag him from the waiver wire in 55% of Yahoo Leagues.
2.18
The league-worst goals per game in 2025, belonging to the LA Kings. Now, a closer look reveals that LA has been middle of the pack in expected goals during this stretch, so it's not like the offense has been playing particularly poorly. Rather, it seems they've suffered from a bit of bad luck as they hold a league-worst shooting percentage during this stretch. The process (expected goals) is good, so over a larger sample the results are likely to improve. Anze Kopitar – who has just six points through 17 appearances since the beginning of January – should bounce back.
31
David Pastrnak's league-leading point total in the calendar year. He also leads the league with 15 goals in 18 games during this stretch. 16 points separate Pastrnak from Pavel Zacha, who sits second in Bruins' scoring. That's the largest gap between a team's top two scorers in 2025.
14.26
The league's highest goals saved above expected since January 1st. That honour belongs to Jake Allen, who has done an excellent job as New Jersey's starter since Jacob Markstrom went down with an injury. Although Markstrom should be back shortly after the break, Allen may have earned more starts down the stretch with this strong showing.
78%
The share of Calgary's goaltending minutes that Dustin Wolf has seen in 2025. The rookie netminder has done an admirable job with a heavy workload after sharing the net evenly with Dan Vladar from October to December.
15:03
Star rookie Matvei Michkov's average ice time in 2025. This is noteworthy because it's a sizeable drop from the 17:35 he was averaging in the first quarter of the campaign, when he posted 17 points in 21 outings. Under reduced minutes this calendar year, Michkov has just seven points in 19 games. For what it's worth, he's back to an average of 17:35 over the four games played after Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee were traded away.
