Eastern Edge: Reliable Line Combos From Montreal, New York, Pittsburgh, and Elsewhere

Given the countless twists and turns in every NHL season, coaches are frequently forced to juggle their lines. Some trios, however, manage to stick together for the full 82-game slate, offering coaches – and fantasy managers – tremendous reliability throughout the season.

Sticking together as a line at the NHL level requires more than talent; it demands mutual trust, skill, and instinct to hold up against worldclass defencemen. Chemistry of this calibre is hard to develop and even harder to maintain year over year.

With this in mind, let's examine some of the most effective Eastern Conference forward lines from last season, each of which seems well-positioned to recreate their magic in 2025-2026.

Montreal Canadiens

Juraj SlafkovskyNick SuzukiCole Caufield

Montreal's top forward unit delivered in a big way last season, logging the third-most minutes of any offensive line (704.9) and ranking third overall in expected goals (35.3).

Still early in his career, Juraj Slafkovsky uses his large frame and improving puck protection to create space and extend possessions; Captain Nick Suzuki acts as the metronome of the line, controlling tempo and distributing the puck with patience; Cole Caufield is the finisher, boasting one of the quickest releases in the league and showcasing his knack for finding soft spots in coverage. While none of the linemates are over the age of 26, together, the Habs' top line exhibits the poise, shooting skills, and physical presence of seasoned vets.

The Canadiens have experimented with their middle six during camp, but the Slaf-Suzuki-CC trio gives coach Martin St. Louis a solid foundation for the year ahead.

New York Rangers

Alexis LafrenièreVincent TrocheckArtemi Panarin

The Rangers' second line often looked more like its first last season, logging the fourth-most minutes (666) and producing the fourth-most expected goals (34.1) leaguewide.

Despite some untapped potential, Alexis Lafrenière can capitalize on chances while adding a youthful punch to the line; Vincent Trocheck anchors the middle with relentless forechecking and strong faceoff work; and Artemi Panarin is the visionary, slowing the game to create passing lanes for his teammates. The trio's blend of grit, elite playmaking, and improving finishing ability makes this group ever dangerous.

The Rangers' depth allows Head Coach Mike Sullivan to move pieces around, but if these three remain united throughout the upcoming season, they project to again rank among the most efficient scoring lines in the conference.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay's acquisition of Jake Guentzel last offseason served as the perfect complement to franchise cornerstones Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov. The trio combined to play the fifth-most minutes (660.1) and generate the seventh-most expected goals (32.1) among forward lines last season.

Jake Guentzel brings a sniper's instinct, positioning himself in the perfect spots to finish plays with ease; Brayden Point drives play with explosive acceleration and sharp edge work, slicing through defences and creating space; and Nikita Kucherov is the master strategist, disguising passes and shots to keep defenders guessing. Their combined speed, vision, and timing make them almost impossible to contain when on the ice together.

Lighting Head Coach Jon Cooper rarely shies away from mixing his lines, but fantasy managers can draft Guentzel, Point, and/or Kucherov with the utmost confidence that they'll stick together atop Tampa's depth chart once again this season.

Boston Bruins

Morgan GeekiePavel ZachaDavid Pastrnak

Although Boston struggled mightily last season, this trio was a silver lining, logging the sixth-most minutes (632.4) and generating the eighth-most expected goals (28.9) leaguewide.

Morgan Geekie brings speed and a north-south physical game that creates turnovers and keeps defenders honest; Pavel Zacha provides a steady two-way presence, using his long reach to protect the puck and set up plays with patience; and David Pastrnak is the pure scorer, wielding a lethal one-timer and consistently finding open ice with deceptive movement. The mix of finesse, finishing talent, and grit stabilized the Bruins' forward group during a transitional year.

Even as Boston continues to retool, new Bruins Head Coach Marco Sturm has the option of leaning on the Geekie-Zacha-Pastrnak line to drive the team's offence in case the current iteration, featuring Elias Lindholm instead of Zacha, falls flat.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Bryan RustSidney CrosbyRickard Rakell

Despite another forgettable season in Pittsburgh, the Rust-Crosby-Rakell line was solid once again, posting the seventh-most minutes played (621.4) and the sixth-highest expected goals total (32.2) in the league last season.

Bryan Rust is a proven goal scorer with declining but above-average speed; Sidney Crosby still drives play with unmatched vision and puck protection; and Rickard Rakell has a versatile offensive toolkit, from a quick release to crafty passing. Together, the line offers a balance of intelligence, pace, and skill that few others match.

Given Pittsburgh's focus on the future, 21-year-old winger Rutger McGroarty got an extended look alongside Crosby and Rust down the stretch last season. However, McGroarty is currently out indefinitely with an upper-body injury, suggesting that a Rust-Crosby-Rakell reunion could be in order to begin the 2025-2026 campaign.
