Analytics Advantage: Hot Starts for Gauthier, Heineman, Malkin, Mercer, and Walman

Early slates often expose who's winning the per-minute battle. This week's five standouts share a theme: elite efficiency paired with usage that's either already strong or clearly trending up. From Cutter Gauthier's sophomore leap to Evgeni Malkin's age-38 playmaking clinic, these profiles highlight where per-60 production and deployment intersect to create actionable fantasy edges.

How we calculate FPPG (Fantasy Points Per Game)

To make things clear, FPPG is based on a simple weighted formula using core box-score stats, then divided by games played. Each goal is worth 6 points, each assist 4, every shot on goal and shot blocked 1.6 points each, and every hit 0.6 points. We fill any missing values with zero, add everything up, and then divide by total games played.

In plain terms: FPPG = (goals × 6) + (total assists × 4) + ((shots + shots blocked) × 1.6) + (hits × 0.6), all divided by games played.

This approach blends scoring, shooting, defensive, and physical contributions into one clear per-game fantasy metric.

Anaheim Ducks — Cutter Gauthier (54%, F)

Gauthier's sophomore leap is showing up exactly where fantasy managers want it: 2.34 G/60 on 14.51 shots/60 (100th-percentile shot generation) with 2.81 points/60 and 13.17 FPPG/60. The assists lag (0.47 A/60) is mitigated by a rising primary involvement (IPP 0.75), and he's bringing helpful floor stats (4.21 hits/60, 0.94 blocks/60). The deployment supports it: 18.31 TOI/GP with an OZS% 0.57, and top-six plus PP minutes are edging higher.

Takeaway: The shot volume is real and is driving a 95th-percentile goal rate; that's bankable skill, not just a heater. In points leagues, he's a hold/buy as the assists catch up. In multi-cat formats, the hits sweeten the profile. If someone in your league thinks he's one-dimensional, capitalize.

New York Islanders — Emil Heineman (5%, F)

Heineman is the early poster child for "impact without minutes": 3.17 G/60, 3.80 P/60, 11.00 FPPG/60 on just 13.54 TOI/GP. The peripherals jump off the page — 18.36 hits/60 (top-3 league rate) and 1.90 blocks/60 — with efficient shooting on modest volume (8.23 shots/60). The SH% (0.384) screams regression, but his on-ice process is solid (CF% 55.7) and he's producing despite fourth-line-ish workload and OZS% 0.53.

Takeaway: Expect the goals to normalize, but the category stack (hits/blocks) plus any incremental bump in PP or even-strength usage keeps him stream-able now and stash-able in deeper leagues. Label him watch/short-term add in shallow formats; in bangers, he's a priority add while the minutes rise.

Edmonton Oilers — Jake Walman (53%, D)

Per-minute dominance at defense doesn't require a household name: Walman sits at 4.65 P/60 with 1.55 G/60, 3.10 A/60, and a 15.30 FPPG/60 that's 100th-percentile among defensemen. The kicker is categorical leverage: 10.85 blocks/60 paired with attacking deployment (OZS% 0.60) and 19.35 TOI/GP. Shot volume is fine (4.65 shots/60), physicality is light, but offense + blocks are a legitimate ceiling combo in roto.

Takeaway: This is the exact archetype that swings leagues from the blue line: high blocks with real points juice. Even with small-sample caveats, the role and on-ice usage point to sustainable value. He's a buy/hold across formats and a must roster where blocks matter.

New Jersey Devils — Dawson Mercer (40% F)

📢 advertisement:

Mercer's balance pops: 1.42 G/60, 1.90 A/60 (3.32 P/60), with uncommon defensive category juice for a forward (4.74 blocks/60, 93rd percentile). He's deployed to score (OZS% 0.57), plays real minutes (18.09 TOI/GP), and the team context backs it (GF% 75, xGF% 52.8). Shot rate (6.16/60) is modest, but the all-situations reliability makes him sticky in line-shuffle environments as New Jersey tunes its second-line mix.

Takeaway: Quiet breakout profile. In points leagues, he's a buy/hold for steady top-six production; in multicat, the rare blocks bolster his weekly floor. If a manager is slow to price in the two-way contribution, send the offer.

Pittsburgh Penguins — Evgeni Malkin (56%, F)

At 38, Malkin remains a per-minute assist engine: 4.48 A/60 (99th percentile) fueling 5.38 P/60 on 16.73 TOI/GP. The Penguins are maximizing him with OZS% 0.84, and the profile stays clean: 7.17 shots/60, light peripherals (hits/blocks), and 10.20 FPPG/60 driven by quality over quantity. He no longer needs heavy volume to deliver top-six efficiency.

Takeaway: In points formats, this is vintage "elite playmaker in optimized minutes." He's a buy/hold where assists and PPP matter; don't chase peripherals, just enjoy the setup equity. If managers are fading the age line, take advantage.

Early-season efficiency is the common thread, but the edges differ: Gauthier's volume-driven goal rate, Heineman's multi-cat pop in limited minutes, Walman's offense-plus-blocks leverage, Mercer's two-way floor, and Malkin's assisted-driven elegance in sheltered usage. Track whether the roles keep nudging up — even small deployment gains will compound these per-60 wins — and move before the box scores fully catch up.
