Welcome back to The Journey, where we track the development of prospects as they excel in junior, make the NHL, and push towards stardom. The OHL season is far enough along that early trends are becoming real signals, and several young players have separated themselves both in production and underlying performance. For fantasy managers, this group is a mix of expected risers, surprising breakouts, and players whose draft stock is climbing quickly.
Jake O'Brien – C, Brantford Bulldogs
O'Brien has been everything the scouting community hoped for and more. His processing speed, poise, and command of pace make him look like a nearly NHL-ready center playing against teenagers. He drives play effortlessly through the middle of the ice, breaks down defensive coverage with precise timing, and consistently makes the right read before opponents can react. At about two points per game, he is dictating entire shifts and elevating everyone around him.

What sets O'Brien apart is how effortless it all appears. He rarely forces plays, he finds space instinctively, and he blends skill, stability, and intelligence in a way that makes him one of the safest long-term projections in junior hockey. He also happens to be doing this on the best team in the OHL. The Brantford Bulldogs are the class of the league, already loaded with talent and now adding Jett Luchanko, making them the obvious championship favorites. They remain the only OHL team unbeaten in regulation. Add in that O'Brien has raised his Hockey Prospecting star potential to 77%, a jump of nearly 25% since his draft year, and he is looking every bit like a future stud.
Adam Benak – C, Brantford Bulldogs
Adam Benak's transition from the USHL to the OHL has been seamless, and he already looks like one of the league's top young offensive drivers. His vision in tight spaces is outstanding, he constantly finds soft ice, and his ability to create high value plays under pressure stands out every night. At nearly two points per game, he is outperforming his 2025 fourth-round draft slot in convincing fashion.

Playing right behind O'Brien on Brantford's scoring leaderboard, Benak is proving that concerns about his 5-foot-8 frame were overblown. His Fantasy Hockey Life card shows he is driving play exceptionally well, winning loose puck battles, and even recording more hits than expected for a smaller forward. His transition game is excellent, his pace is NHL caliber, and his calm confidence allows him to manipulate defenders effortlessly. If this trajectory holds, Benak is shaping up to be one of the early breakout steals of the 2025 draft.
Adam Jiricek – D, Brantford Bulldogs
Jiricek's rebound season has been one of the most encouraging developments in the OHL. After an injury-filled and uneven draft plus one campaign, he finally looks healthy, confident, and fully in control of his game. His breakout passing has returned, his transition work is clean, and his mobility looks much sharper than it did a year ago. The offense has followed naturally. Sitting well above a point per game from the blue line, he is showing the poise and intelligence that made him such a highly regarded prospect, and he is doing it without forcing plays. He is letting the game come to him, reading pressure well, and finding seams with the calm, calculated style that once defined his projection.

The usage tells an equally important story. Jiricek leads the team in even strength time on ice and receives the most power play deployment of any defender, a clear sign of trust from the coaching staff. His Fantasy Hockey Life card reinforces the breakout, showing excellent play driving, strong loose puck recovery, high puck battle win rates, and efficient transition work. His block, shot, and hit (BASH) numbers are also outstanding, giving him a sturdy fantasy floor even if his scoring takes time to fully translate at the NHL level. With this combination of usage, underlying indicators, and renewed confidence, Jiricek looks firmly back on track as an impactful future NHL blueliner and a highly appealing dynasty asset.
Kashawn Aitcheson – D, Barrie Colts
Aitcheson is a tough, hard-nosed defender who brings an edge to every shift. His physical game translates cleanly at the OHL level, where he consistently imposes himself in board battles and net front scrums, and he has begun pairing that style with meaningful offensive growth. After finishing just under a point per game in his draft season, he is now pushing above that mark, showing better timing in the offensive zone and improved confidence carrying the puck. The growing scoring touch does not look fluky, and when combined with his competitiveness and willingness to play heavy minutes, it makes him one of the more intriguing late developing defense prospects in the league.

His fantasy appeal is even clearer when looking at the peripherals. In the OHL, he is averaging about one hit, one and a half blocks, and three and a half shots per game, an excellent baseline for any defender hoping to transition into a multi category NHL role. If even a portion of his scoring carries over to the professional ranks, he becomes extremely valuable in formats that reward volume stats. The comparable of Cody Ceci represents something close to a floor, since that level of physical reliability already looks well within reach. With continued improvement in his reads and offensive timing, Aitcheson has a chance to become a genuinely impactful fantasy option once he reaches the NHL.
Nathan Villeneuve – C/LW, Sudbury Wolves
Villeneuve remains one of the more underrated play drivers in the OHL. His motor and compete level show up every night, and he has sharpened his north south style with better timing and creativity. He pushes defenders back, wins loose pucks, and keeps plays alive with quick touches that support possession. After getting a brief taste of AHL action last season, he has returned to junior with noticeably more confidence. His production has taken another step in his draft plus two season, and his processing speed in transition continues to trend in the right direction.

Even with the statistical growth, his Hockey Prospecting star potential went down from 32% to 20%, which reflects the need for a bigger breakout to move that needle. Still, that number remains perfectly respectable for his archetype, especially given how reliably he drives play and generates volume. Villeneuve projects as a potential middle six NHL forward. If he continues progressing at this pace, he could become a useful complementary scorer at the NHL level.
Cameron Reid – D, Kitchener Rangers
Reid's counting stats do not jump off the page at first glance, but the structure of his game is increasingly impressive. He anticipates well, plays reliable two-way hockey, and shows a growing sense of how to support transition play. His skating has continued to improve, which allows him to arrive earlier on retrievals, help his team exit cleanly, and disrupt opposing entries with good timing. He remains one of the more polished offensive defensemen in the 2025 draft class, and he is flirting with a point-per-game pace because of how well he understands where plays are going rather than relying on flash.

His Fantasy Hockey Life card shows that his transition game through carry has been excellent, and he has consistently driven play. As a smaller defender, competitiveness has been a question at times, so it is notable that his loose puck battles won rate this season is extremely high. His blend of intelligence, mobility, and reliably strong underlying metrics makes him a sneaky player to monitor as he rounds out his game.
Filip Ekberg – LW, Carolina Hurricanes
Ekberg slipped all the way to pick 221 of the 2025 draft, likely because of his 5-foot-10 frame. Those who believed in his talent are not surprised he's having a strong draft plus one season. His sense of timing in the offensive zone and his ability to create off movement give him a real foundation as a playmaker. He reads pressure well, finds soft pockets with consistency, and shows enough deception with the puck to generate clean looks for both himself and his linemates. At nearly a point-per-game to start his OHL season, he is forcing some scouts to revisit earlier evaluations.

Ekberg remains a bit polarizing because his defensive game can still drift and his long-term projection varies depending on who you ask, but the skill is undeniably real. His pNHLe will rise should his production continue at this pace. For dynasty managers, Ekberg is shaping up as a classic post draft value swing, the kind of late round skill bet who can become very interesting if the offense continues to build and the details tighten just a bit.
