As fantasy leagues move deeper into January, roles begin to stabilize and short-term trends start to separate noise from sustainable value. This edition of Wild West highlights Western Conference players whose recent usage and deployment changes point toward meaningful fantasy relevance in the weeks ahead.

Rostered percentages reflect a general range across major fantasy platforms and are included to highlight availability. Skater stats are shown as GP-G-A-P and goalie stats are shown as GP-GAA-SV%-SO.

Zeev Buium (VAN) — 41-4-14-18

  • The Quinn Hughes trade has opened up a few opportunities for certain players to shine. The first and probably most prominent player on this list was the centrepiece of the return from Minnesota. Zeev Buium has been propelled into a top-four role and is now quarterbacking the Canucks' first power-play unit. This is reflected in his jump in ice time from 12-19 minutes to averaging around 21 minutes on the Canucks. Buium has made the most of this opportunity and as he gets more settled with the move one can expect his numbers to go up.

Fantasy Takeaway: Opportunity based add
Rostered: Roughly 40-80% owned across formats

Eeli Tolvanen (SEA) — 39-7-18-25

  • After a very slow start to the season Tolvanen has been on an absolute tear coming into the new year. He is a meaningful addition for both points and peripherals. With his hot streak he has also earned more ice time giving him more opportunities in the Kraken top-six and powerplay.

Fantasy Takeaway: Short-term add
Rostered: Roughly 30-40% rostered

Sean Durzi (UTA) — 21-1-10-11

  • After missing quite some time due to injury Durzi has been one of the hottest defensemen as of late and has reclaimed his spot on Utah's top pair alongside Mikhail Sergachev. While his offensive game is not his main calling card, he is a reliable peripheral contributor while providing secondary offense.

Fantasy Takeaway: Streamer/deep league hold
Rostered: Roughly 15-45% across major platforms

Kevin Fiala (LAK) — 40-14-14-28

  • While Kevin Fiala is likely owned in most leagues, he is one of the best second-half performers in the NHL, year after year he appears to hit another gear post-game 41. Since 2019–20, Fiala has produced at a higher points-per-game rate in the second half of the season in five of six years, with an average increase of nearly 50% when measured by games played.

Fantasy Takeaway: Strong buy/hold
Rostered: Likely rostered in most standard leagues (80-90%)

Ryan Hartman (MIN) — 39-9-7-16

  • Hartman is the second benefactor from the Quinn Hughes trade on this list. With Marco Rossi being traded out, an opening emerged at 1C alongside Kirill Kaprizov. Hartman has always been a consistent contributor in shots, blocks, and hits and now his offensive production is only trending upward.

Fantasy Takeaway: Stream/deep league add
Rostered: Rostered in roughly 15-30% of leagues

Luke Evangelista (NSH) — 40-6-24-30

  • Luke Evangelista has been a bright spot on an otherwise lackluster Nashville team, the 23-year-old loves to shoot the puck and has produced well so far this season. Since November 24th Evangelista has 20 points in 20 games. As he continues to move forward and excel in his young career, he is a solid option for point-based teams.

Fantasy Takeaway: Watch close in standard leagues, add/hold in deep leagues
Rostered: Under 10% in standard leagues, closer to 40% in deeper formats

Esa Lindell (DAL) — 42-4-13-17

📢 advertisement:
  • On a star-studded Dallas roster, Lindell continues to provide steady value by logging heavy minutes and consistently contributing in the defensive categories. His 2.25 blocks per game give him a strong nightly floor, and while the offense isn't flashy, his role and reliability make him a useful depth option in formats that reward peripherals.

Fantasy Takeaway: Category-league hold, streamer in points formats
Rostered: Roughly 35-55% of leagues

Mikael Backlund (CGY) — 41-10-16-26

  • Backlund has been heating up offensively, posting seven points over his last four games while maintaining a solid shot rate with 95 shots through 41 games. While not a heavy peripheral contributor, the recent scoring run is supported by shot volume and usage, making him a solid short-term fantasy option.

Fantasy Takeaway: Stream while hot
Rostered: Under 20% rostered in most leagues

Pavel Mintyukov (ANA) — 36-5-6-11

  • Mintyukov's fantasy value has trended upward as his ice time has climbed into the 17–20-minute range after starting the season closer to 12 minutes per night. That increased responsibility has translated into strong peripheral production, including 42 blocks in 18 games, with enough even-strength offense to matter in multi-category formats.

Fantasy Takeaway: Add in deep leagues, watch in standard formats
Rostered: Widely available in standard leagues (under 35% rostered)

Joel Hofer (STL) — 23-2.88-0.900-3

  • Hofer has quietly worked his way into a larger role in St. Louis, earning increased starts with a strong stretch of play that includes five wins and a shutout over his last seven appearances. While Jordan Binnington remains in the mix, Hofer's recent usage and performance suggest he has earned the coaching staff's trust, giving him short-term fantasy value in formats that reward wins and save percentage.

Fantasy Takeaway: Short-term add; stream while role holds
Rostered: Around 20-40% rostered

As January lineups continue to take shape, this is often the point in the season where fantasy value begins to lag behind real-life deployment. Players earning more responsibility don't always show up immediately in box scores or roster percentages, but those trends tend to surface quickly once minutes and roles stabilize. Identifying these shifts early can be the difference between reacting on the waiver wire and staying ahead of it.

All stats are up to date as of Monday, January 5th, 7 a.m. PST. Thanks for reading this edition of Wild West. If you have any comments or concerns, please let me know in the comments.
