Ramblings: Seguin Out for Season, Stanley on Top Power Play, Weekend Players to Watch (Feb 28)

Tyler Seguin will miss the rest of the regular season and playoffs because of a torn ACL. Seguin is officially droppable in single-season leagues, while his keeper league value is falling as a 34-year-old Band-Aid Boy. For the Stars, this has implications because they will be able to be active buyers at the trade deadline with the full cap relief of Seguin's $9.85 million cap hit.
Seguin finishes the season with 17 points (7 G, 10 A) in 27 games. He played in just 20 games last season, so injuries have really gotten a hold of him. He has one season left on his contract after this one.

Alex Tuch led the Sabres with a power-play goal and an assist with six shots on goal and three blocked shots in their 3-2 win in Florida. Tuch is the subject of trade rumors because he is a UFA this offseason, but I simply don't see how the Sabres trade him given their current place in the standings. Buffalo is currently tied with Detroit for second in the Atlantic Division with the exact same record (59 GP – 34 W, 19 L, 6 OTL). The question still remains as to whether Tuch is still a Sabre next season.
With an assist on Tuch's power-play goal, Ryan McLeod has 12 points in his last 10 games and 29 points over his last 30 games. I had presumed that McLeod would be a bust this season after an unexpected 53-point campaign, but the Sabres have unlocked an offensive side to his game that the Oilers did not. Being a center stuck behind Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl probably had something to do with that. McLeod is on pace for 60 points this season, which would be even better than last season. McLeod's icetime is up about three minutes per game in Buffalo from what he was averaging in Edmonton, and the Sabres are even using him on the power play more often this season.
With a 27-save win on Friday, Alex Lyon has 12 wins and 11 quality starts over his last 14 games, also posting a 2.27 GAA and .925 SV% over that span. I've added him in one league and am starting him whenever possible. When the Zero G recaps appear after the season (who knows, maybe I'll write one), Lyon's name could be mentioned. He was drafted in 3% of Yahoo leagues.
Sam Bennett led the Panthers with a goal and a power-play assist in the loss. Bennett also logged 21 minutes in this game. He has points in back-to-back games since returning from the Olympics.
With a goal on Friday, Matthew Tkachuk has five goals and 10 points in 12 games this season.

In the Capitals' 3-2 win over Vegas, Pierre-Luc Dubois scored two goals while adding an assist. Dubois also finished with six shots and a plus-3 in nearly 20 minutes of icetime. Dubois has five points in nine games this season, but all of those points came after his return from an abdominal injury three games ago. Dubois scored a career-high 66 points in his first season with Washington last season, and he's a player to consider in many formats if he's available (33% Yahoo/47% Fantrax).
Aliaksei Protas assisted on both of Dubois' goals, giving him eight points over his last six games. Although his production is down slightly from last season, Protas recently reached 20 goals for the second consecutive season.
Rasmus Sandin also registered two assists, which gives him at least 20 points for the fourth consecutive season.
With an assist on Friday, Pavel Dorofeyev has a five-game point streak with seven points over that span. Dorofeyev also has power-play points in three consecutive games.

In Utah's 5-2 win over Minnesota, Clayton Keller led the way with a goal and two assists. Keller now has eight points over his last four games. He has also recorded power-play points in each of his last three games. A minus player for nearly all of his career with the Coyotes/Mammoth, Keller's plus-21 this season shows that he is no longer a drain to your fantasy team in that category (if your league counts plus/minus… I have a few that do and like it that way).
Speaking of plus-minus, only three players have a better plus-minus than John Marino's plus-38. Marino was a plus-2 on Friday.
Lawson Crouse scored a pair of goals with five shots on Friday. Crouse's 31 points this season already far surpasses his 18 points from last season. Add in his consistent triple-digit hit totals and he's worth rostering in bangers leagues again.
Gold medal game scorer Matt Boldy scored a goal while adding an assist with seven shots on Friday. Boldy has piled up 18 points over his last nine games, and he has fired an astounding 23 shots while scoring six goals over his last three games. One of a handful of players who could push for 50 goals this season, Boldy has established himself as a top-tier fantasy option this season.
Joel Eriksson Ek left Friday's game after taking a high stick to his face. The Wild did not provide an update after the game. Consider him uncertain for Sunday's game against St. Louis. Eriksson Ek's seven-game point streak also ended in this game.

Matthew Schaefer is probably the Calder Trophy favorite and deservedly so. However, Beckett Sennecke should probably receive some consideration. Sennecke assisted on three Ducks goals in their 5-4 overtime win over Winnipeg. Sennecke now leads all rookies in both goals (19) and points (48). Thought to be a reach by many as the third overall pick in 2024, Sennecke might already be proving the doubters wrong.
Since his return to the Ducks' lineup from a thigh injury, Leo Carlsson has goals in back-to-back games, four points, and seven shots. Carlsson had just two points in 11 games before the injury, so it seems like the time off did him some good.
Logan Stanley, top power-play option? That's what has happened in Winnipeg with both Josh Morrissey and Neal Pionk sidelined. Stanley registered two assists – one on the power play – while logging 28:13, which is easily a season-high for him. Stanley was held without a point on Wednesday against Vancouver, but he took five shots and skated 25:34 in that game. Never an offensive threat throughout his career, the 6-7 Stanley has reached a career-high nine goals and 20 points this season. His previous career high in goals? One. At least he made a point to score an annual goal in each of his last five seasons. He's worth adding but probably only until one of Morrissey or Pionk return.
Mark Scheifele appeared to be dealing with a leg injury late in overtime. No update was provided after the game, so keep an eye on this if you roster Scheifele.

Let's get you ready for the weekend push.
Teams with games both Saturday and Sunday: Calgary, Chicago, NY Islanders, Pittsburgh, San Jose, St. Louis
Every team plays at least one game this weekend.
Here are some two-game players to watch over the weekend.
Anthony Mantha – Sidney Crosby's multiweek injury has created a spot on the top power play for Mantha. Considered an afterthought in almost all league drafts due to his injury history, Mantha is on pace to hit 50 points for the first time in his career. That seems improbable considering how long Mantha has been around and how highly valued he was at one time, but he has earned his Band-Aid Boy status. It would have been easy to give up on him, but he has managed to come back even stronger. Mantha is available in about two-thirds of Yahoo leagues, so he could help this weekend.
Dylan Holloway – One of the most disappointing near-universally drafted players this season due to both injuries and reduced production, Holloway came off injured reserve on Thursday with a bang. The Blues forward recorded a hat trick along with an assist, five shots, and a plus-4 against Seattle. In fact, the Holloway-Pius Suter–Jonatan Berggren line combined for nine points in this game. Holloway was cut in about half of the Yahoo leagues that he was drafted in (83% to under 40%), but if he's not available, then linemates Suter and Berggren probably are. Holloway also averages over two hits per game.
Sam Rinzel – If you need a defenseman, Rinzel is less than 10% rostered in Yahoo leagues and on the Blackhawks' top power play. In Chicago's first game after the break, Rinzel logged over five minutes on the top power play, registering a power-play assist. Rinzel has also taken three shots on goal in each of his last four games while logging at least 20 minutes in each of those four games. The 21-year-old rookie, who was sent to the AHL for nearly two months before a late January recall, could be one of those late-season waiver-wire adds that turns out to be a difference maker if he can stick on the top power play.
