Fantasy Take: Mammoth Add Weegar for Maatta, Castagna & Picks

The Calgary Flames continue to sell off, moving MacKenzie Weegar out to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for Olli Maatta, Jonathan Castagna, and three second round picks in 2026 (UTA/OTT/NYR).

For Utah, it's a coup to pull off a deal for such an impact player without giving up one of their top prospects like Tij Iginla, Dimitri Simashev, or Caleb Desnoyers.

What the Mammoth Get:

Weegar is an all-around solid defenceman who is still playing well at 32-years-old, and is signed for six more years at a very reasonable $6.25 Million cap hit. Weegar has been a positive Corsi defenceman in each of his ten NHL seasons, and has logged huge minutes for Calgary over the last few years.

Weegar is one of the best multi-category defencemen in the fantasy game right now, bringing in a combined 6.6 SOG+Hits+Blks per game, which is second only to Kiefer Sherwood in per-game efficiency. His plus-minus has been atrocious in Calgary, but that will turn around quickly in Utah. The scoring may see a bit of an uptick as well, but it will be limited without the two minutes per game of power play time that he was seeing in Calgary.

The Mammoth's big new acquisition is a right-shot defenceman, which means he should slot in either on a loaded top-pair alongside Mikhail Sergachev, or down with Nate Schmidt on the second pairing if the idea is to spread the talent across multiple D-pairs.

What the Flames Get:

The Flames get worse, which is one of the best things for them right now as they stockpile future assets and try to improve the positioning of their own first round selection. Olli Maatta will help keep the ship from tipping over completely, as a reliable second-pairing defenceman. That should help soften the blow, at least in the defensive end, which Dustin Wolf owners can breathe a sigh of relief about.

Castagna is a third-round selection from back in 2023, who is having a rebound year in college with Cornell after struggling in 2024-25. If he makes it to the NHL, it will likely be as a reliable but unspectacular third-line centre. He's not the key to the trade, but could be someone that Calgary sees an NHL future for.

The three second round picks are the big prize, as all three could be top-50 selections, with the earliest currently slotting in at pick #35. It doesn't sound as great just to say second-round picks, but Calgary is going to be getting three players who are likely all top-30 players on their own list.

The Flames also free up some ice time to see what Zayne Parekh can do with a longer leash, and to try and get a better sense of whether Yan Kuznetsov is the real deal with well how he has performed in a more limited/sheltered role so far this year.
