Fantasy Take: Oilers/Blackhawks Swap Again, This Time It’s Dickinson for Mangiapane

Michael Clifford

For the second time in three days, the Edmonton Oilers finalized a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. This time it was for Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach with Andrew Mangiapane and a first-round pick next year going back to the Blackhawks. The trade was initially reported by Elliotte Friedman (that I could find).

Mangiapane has one year left on his current contract while Dickinson will be a free agent at the end of this season, per PuckPedia.

What Edmonton Gets

In a perfect world, the Oilers just got a genuine third-line centre they have been sorely lacking. Dickinson is responsible defensively, is effective at killing penalties, and with 35 goals over his last 188 games (or 15 goals every 82 games), he can chip in offensively.

This doesn't really change a lot for Dickinson. Going to Edmonton brings him to a potent offence, but his ice time with either of Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl is going to be very limited. The bottom-6 offence for Edmonton has been downright awful this year, and considering Dickinson was skating with 20-goal talents like Ilya Mikheyev and Ryan Donato, this may actually be a downgrade for him. The hope is he can find some chemistry with guys like Matt Savoie and Adam Henrique to give the Oilers a genuine third scoring line they haven't had in… quite some time.

Adding Dickinson to the roster does hurt the ice time upside for Edmonton regulars like Henrique and Trent Frederic, though the acquisition of Dickinson was in large part to the depth not doing much this season anyway.

What Chicago Gets

From 2019-2023, Andrew Mangiapane averaged 1.1 goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5, per Evolving Hockey. That is a span of 288 games and four years where he scored at the rate of a top-30 forward in the league, and the same rate as Nathan MacKinnon.

It has been an absolute horror show over the last three years though as Mangiapane's scoring rate, on a per-minute basis, is half what it was in those previous four years. He turns 30 years old next month, so it's not as if he's ancient, but a lot of time has passed since he was anything approaching productive. He probably gets a crack with Connor Bedard at some point, and he'll have to make a good impression quickly because Bedard's line mates have changed frequently over the years, and there's not a lot of offensive depth (yet) if Mangiapane isn't on the top line. He should at least get in games regularly, but there's a canyon between getting regular games and being useful for most fantasy leagues.
