Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Eastern Edge. This week we'll continue our look at Round 2 of the Eastern Conference playoffs as the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres take it to the limit with a seventh game to determine who faces a well-rested Carolina Hurricanes team in the Eastern Conference Final. Speaking of the Hurricanes, we'll take a closer look at the club’s top two prospects in Bradly Nadeau and Felix Unger Sorum.
Let's get to it!
Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes may have had to endure a lengthy break in action with two series sweeps while the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres battled it out in what was a highly entertaining second round series. However, that gives us a chance to dig into the organization’s prospect pool to uncover the next wave of talent that will make its way to Raleigh in the not-too-distant future.
Bradley Nadeau
The 5'11" 180lbs forward is arguably Carolina's top prospect possessing one heck of a shot as evidenced by his back-to-back seasons of twenty-five goals or more over the course of his first two professional campaigns with the Hurricanes AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.
Nadeau has been quite productive at every level and that was no different once he joined the Wolves for the 2024-2025 season as the then 19-year-old had himself a phenomenal rookie year putting up 32 goals and 26 assists totaling 58 points in 64 games played. The New Brunswick native followed that up with an even more impressive showing this past season by notching twenty-seven goals accompanied by twenty-nine assists for a point total of 56 points in only 52 games played. A marked improvement in points per game from 0.91 to 1.08, all before his age-21 season.
Nadeau has served notice during his brief cups of coffee at the NHL level in particular due to his pro ready release scoring three goals while adding one assist in his fifteen games played for the Hurricanes d to date. It no longer seems to be a matter of when as it relates to the organization's top prospect, I would expect the 21-year-old to be the first call up to Carolina in case of injury.
Felix Unger-Sorum
Felix Unger-Sorum has certainly made a name for himself after a highly successful campaign in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves as the Norwegian forward led the Wolves in scoring with a very solid 17 goals and 49 assists totaling 66 points over the course of 72 games played in his second with Chicago. This was after a decent rookie campaign that saw Unger-Sorum put up five goals and 15 assists in 61 games. A smart playmaking forward with excellent vision, has allowed him to transition rather smoothly to the North American style as he continues to build on his overall game.
The skilled right winger finished the AHL season firmly entrenched in the league's top ten in scoring, establishing his play-driving abilities while improving his plus / minus by a noticeable 23 points, which is not overly surprising when you consider the organization's philosophy of puck possession all while being responsible defensively.
Between both Unger-Sorum and Nadeau the next wave of talented Hurricanes seems to be in good hands with the added bonus of gaining invaluable experience in the Calder Cup playoffs as the Wolves are up 2-0 in their divisional final against the Grand Rapids Griffins (Detroit Red Wings). Quite simply the rich get richer, which suits the rabid Hurricanes fanbase just fine.
Buffalo Sabres / Montreal Canadiens (MTL wins 4-3)
In what was a highly entertaining matchup between two of the youngest teams in the league, the Montreal Canadiens outlasted the Buffalo Sabres in a thrilling seven game series with Alex Newhook notching his second series-clinching goal of the postseason in overtime to send the Habs to the Conference finals.
The resilient Canadiens will be the only team remaining that did not win their division, however, this young Montreal team will have been battle tested against the veteran-laden Tampa Bay Lightning in which they took three of four games on the road including a deciding Game 7. Montreal then proceeded to cook up a similar recipe by taking three out of four games at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, again including a deciding game seven victory to dispatch of the high-flying Sabres.
The Canadiens will now look to take advantage of a Carolina Hurricanes team that has not played over the course of the last week and a half as they waited to find out their opponent in the Conference final. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes will hope to use the rest as an advantage over a Montreal Canadiens squad that has just completed their second seven-game series against two formidable foes.
The young Habs will need to keep the line of Taylor Hall – Logan Stankoven – Jackson Blake in check to have any hope of pushing through to the Stanley Cup Final as that line has been dominating at every turn running roughshod over the opposition. On top of that, Montreal will need to figure out the brick wall that is Frederik Andersen who has been absolutely stellar this postseason having fashioned an unblemished record of 8-0 with a miniscule 1.12 goals against and outstanding .950 save percentage including two shutouts.
The Buffalo Sabres have a lot to be proud of after taking their fanbase on an incredible ride all the way to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs after having put those same fans through the longest playoff drought in NHL history. The Sabres will be a problem for a number of teams over the next few seasons and certainly gave Montreal all they could handle having tilted the ice in their favor on numerous occasions. Add in the fact that there will be internal growth with this group moving forward along with the experience of these playoffs that will go a long way in helping this young group in continuing to mature.
The focus now shifts to the Conference final where a perennial Stanley Cup contender in the Carolina Hurricanes will take on the upstart Montreal Canadiens to find out who punches their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final. Buckle up, this should be another highly entertaining series!
