Lombardi talks advanced stats; Lindholm a solid breakout candidate; prospect notes and more …

Great, now I have to follow another one of Drance’s awesome ramblings. This one was called, by one Twitter user, “best ramblings I’ve seen in awhile”. If you missed it, catch it here.

If you don’t have my Fantasy Guide yet – it’s here. Last update was Thursday. Next update will be Thursday. Then you’re looking at every day or two going forward. Camp cuts, line combos, projections, injuries – all will receive attention during updates.

Dean Lombardi, thought to be one of the earlier GMs to jump aboard the fancy stats train, has some interesting thoughts on his use of them. The Kings obviously put a lot of value in puck possession and they have two Cups to show for it. From the article…
He acknowledged that he has spoken on the phone "a number of times" with former Boston Red Sox General Manager and current Chicago Cubs Director of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein about the use of analytics, but won't divulge how his own club's decisions are based on the statistical resources that they've compiled.
Also this gem from Lombardi:
“There's a big difference between data and knowledge, and how you use it. Be careful. And the other thing, too, is that you'll never convince me that emotion isn't a huge part of this game, more than any other game. If you have two teams like this, this one's clearly better than this one," Lombardi said, placing his hands at two different levels two feet above his desk. "But if [the lower] team is emotionally charged, I think in hockey they can close this gap more than any other sport.“

Last week I mentioned that the app is now back and ready for the Android. Well, now it’s ready for the iPhone as well. The free app streams my ramblings and gives access to the draft lists. Yes, you have to pay for the draft list – but for $4.99 you have $19 worth of draft lists (both playoff and season). This year, the added feature is a player search tool. Next year the added feature will be the monthly rankings. Now THAT will be handy…

Prospect tournaments are rolling now as he we head into main camp in less than a week. And there is no shortage of coverage and observations. I’ll share some of what I’ve reviewed with you and there is a team you are interested in, feel free to click the links I give and read more.
Nashville vs. Tampa thoughts here. Basically, Drouin didn’t dominate and the two TB goaltenders played great (Vasilevskiy and Gudlevskis). No surprise with the latter given how highly I regard each of them. I think Gudlevskis, while he’ll split time in the AHL with Vas, will end up covering for Ben Bishop if Bishop gets hurt. Gudlevskis is better than Nabokov. Vasilevskiy will be better than both of them – but is a couple of years away.
Also in that link above – Florida vs. Boston. Ekblad was outstanding, and both Vincent Trocheck and Rocco Grimaldi impressed as well. Check out profiles on all the Florida Panthers here.
Here is a Columbus vs. Detroit recap. Not a lot in the way of observations with that one, though Anthony Mantha and Tomas Nosek each scored for the Wings. But we have fantasy profiles on Mantha (here) and Nosek (here).
And here you’ll find the Calgary vs. Edmonton game. What caught my eye was the fact that Johnny Gaudreau and Sam Bennett are clicking as linemates. Not a surprise, given the talent involved, but interesting in that you could see those two together in Calgary to start the season. For what it’s worth, I don’t think Bennett sticks with the team beyond the nine games…but Gaudreau will play at least half the season in the NHL and possibly the full term. In fact, our Calgary reporter Brad Wilson is penciling him in for the Calder Trophy. He’s probably getting ahead of himself, but still – the fact that he’s getting that kind of notice warrants a mention. You can read profiles on all the Flames players, including the Top 10 in the system, here.
For video recap of the Battle of Alberta (junior edition), here you are:
And here is the Ducks – Sharks recap. Of note, Stefan Noesen had three points. Noesen had missed most of last season with a knee injury and it’s good to see him bounce back. Read up on Noesen here.

Saturday’s recap of the Dallas – Carolina game (here) reports that Brett Ritchie suffered a broken finger. He is probably out for the last two games of the tournament. It was his pinkie finger.
