Looking Ahead: Nice Outlooks for Seider, Mangiapane and the Golden Knights

The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)

Andrew Mangiapane, LW, Calgary Flames (Available in 28% of ESPN leagues, 23% Fantrax, 54% Yahoo ) – The Flames have been off to a great start this season with a 4-1-1 record and have looked great on their most recent east coast road trip. I think part of this has to do with a full training camp and preseason under head coach Darryl Sutter, who even going back to last season taking over in March has had this team going in the right direction. The other part of this club's success has come from their depth, Mangiapane being the standout.

When you think of the Flames roster the first thing that comes to mind (besides great sweaters) is their first line of Gaudreau – Lindholm – Tkachuk and while that is a very good first line it's hard not to notice the start of the season that Mangiapane is having, playing mostly middle six minutes and second PP time. He thus far has 7 goals on 19 SOGs with 6 of those goals coming in the last 4 games played. Now, do I think he keeps up with the 96-goal pace that he's on? As much as fantasy owners would love to see it, I'm going to go out on a limb here and lean more towards "no" on that front, but for the time being Mangiapane is a terrific addition to a fantasy team in need of scoring. It helps as well that the Flames next 5 games are all at home which could allow Mangiapane to see time vs the bottom 6 of opponent's rosters.

The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)

Moritz Seider, D, Detroit Red Wings (Available in 79% of ESPN leagues, 23% Fantrax, 65% Yahoo) – I want to take it back to draft night 2019, which in retrospect is starting to look more and more like a loaded first round. Detroit is up with the 6th overall pick and with that selection they take a player out of the DEL. The crowd makes a very surprised expression, and the cameras then show in the crowd the newest Detroit Red Wing, Moritz Seider, with his hands folded in front of his mouth with the same expression we all had- That even he's as surprised as we are that a player projected somewhere in the late first/early second round, has just gone off the board at 6. I remember being very skeptical myself on the pick, but Stevie Y is a smart guy and so far this season the Wings look to have a very promising young player on their blueline.

In 7 games so far this season Seider has 6 points and has looked very comfortable skating on Detroit's top defensive pairing with Dan DeKeyser/Nick Leddy but what now adds to his value is Detroit moving up and playing on PP1. Detroit as a team also hasn't been the turnstile club that they have been in season's past, with only one real bad loss to the Habs in Montreal, Detroit has looked competitive in every game that they have played so far. In leagues that have multiple scoring categories, Seider can contribute in hits and blocks categories while currently averaging 21:50 TOI.

The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)

Tyler Myers, D, Vancouver Canucks (Owned in 67% of ESPN leagues, 28% of Fantrax, 10% Yahoo) – In fantasy I think it can be easier to look to the waiver wire to add a D than a F in most cases and if you're currently rostering Myers it may be time to look who is available in you league.

Myers is currently on Vancouver's top defensive pairing with alongside Oliver Ekman-Larsson but not seeing PP time which isn't the end of the world fantasy-wise but it's making him a stay away in DFS in trying to stack Vancouver's powerplay. Myers ice time has decreased the past 5 games as well going from 25:33 TOI to 18:14, part of this is due to filling in for injuries but the one thing we can't ignore is that Myers is not shooting the puck with only 7 shots so far this season.

The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)

Cole Caufield, RW, Montreal Canadiens (Owned in 68% of ESPN leagues, 91% of Fantrax, 67% Yahoo) – This one is hard because I do really like Caufield as a player that has offensive upside to his game and seems to bring excellent energy to the rink with him. Caufield has only 1 point in his last 7 games to start the season and I think we could be looking at a slow start for the 20 year old winger.

Coming into the season the debate for the Calder seemed to largely be between two players- Caufield and Trevor Zegras of the Ducks. There's no debating that Caufield would be in a more advantageous spot in Montreal than Zegras in Anaheim but as the season has progressed Caufield is starting to see more time on the bottom 6 of Montreal than he did starting the season. I know the one knock on him coming into the draft was his size, and believe me as long as you can create space in the OZ I don't think it matters, but we have to look at Caufield's game thus far this season and look to project it out over the course of a full 82. He played 61 games last season spread out at the University of Wisconsin (31 games), Laval (2 games), and Montreal (10 regular season, 20 playoffs), it can be more difficult going from a college schedule where you mainly workout during the week to play on weekends to then go to an NHL schedule where you can sometimes play 4 games in a week's span. Add this to the very short offseason from playing in the Cup Finals and I think we could be looking at a slow start for Caufield. I hope he can turn his game around but from a fantasy perspective he might be a good trade piece right now.

Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)

This period runs from October 29th to November 10th

Vegas – Coming up Vegas has a nice home matchup tomorrow (Oct 29th) with the Ducks on a back-to-back followed by a three game Canadian road trip to Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. This is a club that just returned from a shot road trip but the reason I like them is if they can get some injured players back then that will help fill out both fantasy and DFS lineups.

Edmonton – Edmonton has 4 upcoming games at home which is 4 games for McDavid, Draisaitl and company on home ice. Oilers head coach Dave Tippet typically sends out McDavid's line against the opponent's top line but let's be honest, McDavid is matchup proof at this point. Get ready to try and fit in some high priced and high owned Oilers in your DFS lineups in the coming days.

Florida –Florida interests me, first because they're 7-0-0 and looked great in each game thus far, but also because they'll be playing a decent amount coming up. Next week (Nov 4 and Nov 6) they'll see Washington and Carolina but both will be on home ice which could favor a Florida 2 stack or FLA PP. Following that stretch they'll NYR and the Devils on a back-to-back, Pittsburgh, and then Tampa. Yes, those are all on the road but is there really much travel between the Rangers and Devils? Then a short trip to Pittsburgh to come back in at least the same state vs Tampa. Keeping in mind this isn't travel in between multiples time zones as well. This upcoming stretch will help fill out all lineups and potential help if you have Florida in a points pool.

Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)

Colorado – The Avs just don't really see much action in the coming days with just a home and home against Columbus next week. Their injuries are beginning to pile up as well so this could be a stretch where they are looking to get healthy for later on in the season.

Dallas –Dallas has a Canadian road trip on the horizon and looking less than stellar coming into it with the second lowest goals for in the league right now. They have inconsistency in their lineups and despite being relatively cheap from a DFS standpoint, they have so far underwhelmed this season.

Boston – Going to echo Colorado here, just two games next week (Nov 1-7) makes them hard to love in the short term. They'll have a heavier schedule following next week but for now this is a club that won't be of much help in fantasy.
