In weekly fantasy hockey matchups, few moves can swing results as sharply as a goaltending performance. A disastrous start can sink multiple categories in an instant, while a clutch shutout can vault a team from the jaws of defeat into victory's sweet embrace. The challenge, of course, is finding short-term value in the landmine that is the goaltending waiver wire.

With several Eastern Conference teams set to play back-to-back games this week, there are plenty of opportunities for short-term help in net. So, without further ado, here are five goaltenders in the East who could give your team an edge in Week 5.

Arturs Silovs, Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins play four times this week, and with Tristan Jarry and Arturs Silovs alternating starts through the early part of the season, Silovs is lined up for Thursday's game against Washington and Sunday's matchup with Los Angeles. After a stellar AHL campaign last season (14-5-1, .908 SV%, 2.41 GAA), Silovs is making the most of his opportunity in Pittsburgh so far, going 3-2-2 with a .913 SV% and a 2.66 GAA in seven games.

Although Silovs took a 5-2 loss in Winnipeg on Saturday, the 23-year-old has delivered five quality starts in seven outings, providing stability for a team that looks re-energized in the early going. Goaltenders on strong teams are often worth a speculative pickup for a single start, let alone two. If he keeps his momentum, Silovs could stick around on fantasy rosters much longer than the week's end.

David Rittich, New York Islanders

David Rittich surprised the hockey world by earning two starts in three games for the Islanders last week. After Rittich got tagged for six goals in a nasty 6-2 loss to the Hurricanes, he rebounded with a steady 22-save effort in a 3-2 comeback win over Columbus on Saturday. Overall, Rittich has posted three quality starts in four appearances this season.

Workhorse starter Ilya Sorokin will likely return to the crease when the Islanders face the Bruins tonight, but the team's back-to-back set against Minnesota and the Rangers this weekend should give Rittich another opportunity. Both matchups are winnable, making Rittich a possible late-week pickup for managers looking to chase an extra start. There's no need to add him immediately, but circle Friday morning as a potential window to add Big Save Dave.

Jonathan Quick, New York Rangers

It's not every day that a three-time Stanley Cup champion and Vezina Trophy winner is sitting on the waiver wire. All jokes aside, verging on 40 years old, Jonathan Quick's prime is well behind him, but he's been excellent so far this season, posting a 2-1-0 record with a sparkling .941 SV% and a 1.35 GAA in three starts.

The Rangers are set to play two sets of back-to-back games over the next two weeks, including this Friday in Detroit and Saturday against the Islanders. With Quick expected to play the back-half of both sets, the future Hall of Famer's streaming appeal could extend beyond just this week. In deeper leagues, adding Quick now could provide a short run of starts behind a Rangers team that finally seems to have found its rhythm.

Leevi Merilainen, Ottawa Senators

With starting netminder Linus Ullmark struggling immensely to start the year, Leevi Meriläinen

has a golden opportunity to earn more playing time in the nation's capital. Meriläinen was excellent last season when Ullmark went down with an injury, posting an 8-3-4 record (.926 SV%, 1.99 GAA) in 12 games. This season, Meriläinen was lit up in Buffalo a few weeks ago, but he responded with a solid two-goal performance in a 7-2 home win against Boston last Monday night.

This week, Ottawa visits Boston on Thursday then plays back-to-back games against Philadelphia and Utah over the weekend. Ullmark is likely to face his former team on Thursday, leaving one of the weekend games for Meriläinen. Given Ullmark's continued struggles (5-4-2, .862 SV%, 3.41 GAA), another steady showing by Meriläinen could go a long way in helping him capture a slightly larger share of the crease in Ottawa – at least for the time being. As they say, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Charlie Lindgren, Washington Capitals

It's been an up-and-down start for Charlie Lindgren, who opened the season with a rock-solid 35-save shutout against the Rangers, followed by two difficult outings in which he allowed 11 goals combined. Lindgren steadied himself in his fourth start of the year on Saturday night with a 3-2 overtime loss in Buffalo, showing signs of the form that carried him to a 25-16-7 record (.911 SV%, 2.67 GAA) in 50 games just two seasons ago.

Logan Thompson has taken firm command of the crease in Washington, but Lindgren should draw Thursday's start in Pittsburgh. While the Penguins have been strong early, Washington is solid defensive team, giving Lindgren a reasonable chance at a quality start. He's also the only goaltender on this list who's likely to play earlier in the week, making him a crafty potential add for managers planning to utilize multiple streamers and maximize games played.
