DFS Thursday: Islanders and Golden Knights Face Off; Colorado’s Top Line; Thompson’s Pricing

Good morning to all my DFS folks out there! We have a 10-gamer on our hands tonight and while looking over the slate early this morning for whatever reason, City Correspondent Stefon from SNL Weekend Update popped into my very, very scattered mind. "This slate has everything! Injuries, the Sharks, a Colorado smash spot, Oilers Twitter…Roman J Israel, Esq…". Not sure how or why I got there, but oh well. Let's dive on in.

Slate Preview

Colorado Avalanche

Okay so let's get this out of the way now. Colorado is (very) good. Buffalo, not so much right now. Colorado is not coming off a road back-to-back. Buffalo is, losing last night to Utah. Colorado is top three in the league the past two weeks in goals for…the Sabres are bottom three. You guys get the idea by now, but the question now is what to do with this game altogether because a one-off Nathan MacKinnon isn't going to get you anywhere tonight. The Avalanche will be without Valeri Nichushkin who left Tuesday's game with a lower-body injury, but that doesn't really help us in the way of saving salary. If you go to full on stack the Avalanche power play, putting Artturi Lehkonen in Nichushkin's spot at RW, that tab comes out to a cool $34,600 leaving you with about $2,900 to fill your roster with players like Max Domi, Anthony Beauvillier, and you'll need to drop all the way down to Ilya Sorokin in net at $7k. This is even going to be a popular depth spot as Victor Olofsson will likely move up to the Avalanche second line along with Gabriel Landeskog scoring his first goal of the season Tuesday night. For me in single entry I just don't know if I get there with this group but a small part of me thinks to go full power play stack and let nature take its course tonight. The Sabres are without pieces on their depth, blue line, and coming off a loss last night might just be too enticing to pass up.

New York Islanders

Somehow, and I can't explain it, the Islanders always find themselves on 10-to-12 game slates, and somehow usually draw interest from me. They're on the road in Vegas, which usually means fade, but I watched Vegas' last game on Monday against Florida, and it just felt like Florida was entering the zone easily and was able to move the puck well in the offensive zone. Now, stop me if you've seen Florida play well against Vegas before and there's a pretty sizeable gap between the Panthers and Islanders, but this matchup looks familiar to me…if you will, allow me to take you all back to last January. I remember writing a DFS piece that odds are said something similar with the Isles going into Vegas…New York went out and won that game 4-0. I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket from past performance but this along with eye test has me interested tonight. I don't mind the first line or even a Mathew Barzal – Matthew Schaefer two-man and I'm even considering this in my single-entry tonight. If they sneak into your mix in multiple entry, I that's perfectly fine as well.

Vegas Golden Knights

Okay so to be clear, this is not a game stack! I'm just here to pick one side or another from this Isles/Knights tilt tonight. I almost always have interest in Vegas when they're on home ice but what's drawing me to them more and more today is because the top line has a couple intriguing dance partners that you could stack tonight. If Auston Matthews is healthy for Toronto and their top line remains how we saw it last game, then the Toronto second line fits perfect with the Vegas top line and that also let's you spend up to around $7,600 in net. Say Matthews misses tonight (editor's note: he is out for tonight), and we need another stack…I got you covered, the Ducks are going up against their old friend John Gibson tonight and their top line also fits perfect with the Knights. That not enough and need a third option? Go for the Blue Jackets top line going up against Edmonton on a back-to-back. For me, I love Vegas with the options that I'm given with them tonight, and if I were going to play three max or above then you could place the Knights in as an anchor stack and build around them.

Defensemen

Cale Makar is your most expensive d-man tonight and I'd only have interest in him with something Colorado. For me, I expect to be on the cheaper side with defensemen but if I crept up in spending, I would likely land somewhere in the low $5k's with John Carlson, Matthew Schaefer, or Charlie McAvoy sitting at $5k. Mattias Ekholm I have circled at $4,100, and I like Drew Doughty sitting down at $3,800.

Goalies

Scott Wedgewood is at the top of the board at $8,500, and it's pricey but I don't hate the play if you have the salary to get up that high and play him. I actually do like Darcy Kuemper at $8,200, but if I'm spending over $8k then it's Connor Hellebuyck or bust. I can see a world where I staple Jakub Dobes to my lineup at $7,600, he's going to see volume going up against the Stars and the price is alright with me. Logan Thompson is way underpriced at $7,500…like this is almost Hellebuyck under $8k at home territory. I will say…if you're brave, Alex Lyon has a goals saves above expected over 6.0 right now. Honestly, a part of me thinks that this game is say 2-0 Sabres going into the first intermission…Colorado probably ends up winning in OT, but I just have that feeling.

Good luck tonight everybody!
