The Wild West: Draft Lottery and Playoff Update

To all the mothers out in the fantasy community, happy Mother's Day! Even if you don't play, you may be the wife of a fantasy junkie or a mom who drives their kid to practice early in the morning. Thank you for all that you do!

The draft lottery was last week and the Vancouver Canucks, who were the worst team in the league by a mile, did not win. They didn't even receive the second pick! The Canucks will select third in this coming draft, potentially missing out on two generational talents.

The San Jose Sharks jumped all the way up to second, the second straight year they will pick in that spot. The Sharks have a plethora of young forwards in the organization and there are a number of good defensemen this year that would look great on their backend. Like I alluded to before though, the two best players available are forwards so the big question is do they pick based off need or who is at the top of their rankings? Granted, maybe those are the same players, but we will find out next month.

The Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks are tied at two games apiece after Anaheim won 4-3 last night. The series will shift back to Las Vegas for Game 5 on Tuesday and everyone will be waiting to see if Vegas captain Mark Stone will be in the lineup. Stone suffered a non-contact injury during Game 3 and did not suit up yesterday.

The Ducks finally broke through on the powerplay, scoring two goals with the extra man. After converting at 50% in the first round, Anaheim had been blanked on the man advantage through the first three games.

Speaking of being blanked, Tomas Hertl was on a 29-game goalless drought before finding the back of the net in the final minute of the game. If Stone is still unable to go, the Golden Knights will need Hertl to start producing.

The Minnesota Wild came up with a statement game on Saturday to make it a 2-1 series lead for the Colorado Avalanche. Even with the extended break, the Wild were still missing Joel Eriksson-Ek and Jonas Brodin. It sounds like the former could be an option for Game 4, while the latter is still going to miss some time.

During the extra days off between games, Nathan MacKinnon was caught doing laps at the hotel swimming pool with flippers on. If you have followed MacKinnon's career, you know he takes his training very seriously, and that is what makes him so great. Fortunately for the lifeguard on duty, he probably won't see him doing that the rest of this series since they took the L after that.

I'm from California so I truly have no idea of the magnitude of the media presence for the Toronto Maple Leafs while in season, but it sure seems like Mitch Marner is better off without that pressure. Currently leading the postseason in points with 16 in 10 games, Marner has elevated his game the last five games and made multiple plays with the puck that show off his patience and smarts. As someone who pegged the Golden Knights to win the whole thing and maybe having a ticket or two on Carter Hart winning the Conn Smythe, I would really appreciate it if he slowed this pace down.

That's it for this week, have a great week everyone!
