Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Eastern Edge. This week we'll dive into the Eastern Conference Final between the Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes while also tapping into the Habs prospect pool to take a closer look at KHL rookie of the year nominee Alexander Zharovsky as well as University of Michigan standout Michael Hage.

Let's get to it!

Alexander Zharovsky

The 19-year-old KHL right winger is the odds-on-favorite to take home the Alexei Cherepanov trophy, awarded to the KHL's top rookie and rightfully so with the productive season the young forward has just put together. Zharovsky finished his rookie season with some rather impressive totals of 16 goals, 26 assists for a total of 42 points in 59 games played. Most impressive of all is the fact that Zharovsky broke the all-time points record for an under-19 player in his rookie season.

The lanky winger is a magician in tight spaces, possessing dynamic puck-handling ability combined with high end playmaking vision in order to generate offense. He is sound defensive, as evidenced by his plus seven rating which is quite impressive for a player of his age, particularly in a league that for the most part prioritizes offense over defense.

Montreal brass are without question quite high on Zharovsky and what he could bring to a Canadiens team that is becoming flush with young talent. However, the team, as well as its fanbase, will need to wait just a little longer to see the burgeoning forward in a Habs uniform as the native of Klin, Russia has decided to remain in his homeland to play out the remainder of his contract with his club team Salavat Yulaev Ufa for the 2026-2027 KHL campaign.

A top six forward spot likely awaits Zharovsky once he decides to make the move to North America, however, there could be some slight seasoning in the AHL to acclimate to the smaller ice surface as well as his new surroundings.

Michael Hage

Michael Hage is yet another high-end prospect out of the Montreal Canadiens system that is becoming the envy of most teams in the NHL. The exciting part about the kind of game that Hage can bring to the table is that he is a dual threat at both ends of the ice combining an ever-maturing offensive game along with a detail-oriented defensive game that has Habs fans drooling at a potential line of Zharovsky – Hage – Ivan Demidov in the not too distant future.

However, before we get ahead of ourselves, Hage has decided to return to the University of Michigan before making the leap to the pros as the Oakville, Ontario native has some unfinished business he would like to take care of at the NCAA level. The 20-year-old will be looking to improve upon what was a very productive campaign with the Wolverines having put up 13 goals and 39 assists for a total of 52 points in 39 games. He'll be relied on heavily by the Wolverines coaching staff in key situations as he continues to develop and refine his game.

Two exciting prospects forward to keep an eye on particularly for those in keeper / dynasty leagues come draft season this fall.

Carolina Hurricanes / Montreal Canadiens (CAR leads 2-1)

The Carolina Hurricanes are beginning to impose their will on the Montreal Canadiens after the 'Canes came away with a 3-2 overtime victory in game three of the Eastern Conference final. The Hurricanes have been relentless since their Game 1 flop, hemming Montreal in the defensive zone for long stretches of sustained pressure with Carolina ringing up the shot total in the process.

The Hurricanes defensive play has also been on point since game one as these "bunch of jerks" have kept the Canadiens offense in check to the tune of no more than two goals against over the last two games. Even more impressive is the limited number of chances they have given up with Montreal directing a paltry twenty-five shots toward Frederik Andersen over the past two games. If Montreal has any hope of getting back into this series, they'll need to figure out a way to drum up much more offensive pressure, at the very least force Andersen to make a save!

Speaking of Andersen, he may not be facing a barrage of shots since the start of the Eastern Conference final, however, he has been there when the 'Canes needed him. That being said, if Montreal can find a way to pierce through Carolina’s defensive structure and throw a few more pucks on net, they could find themselves in a much better position as Andersen owns a record of 2-1 with a 3.00 goals against and an .853 save percentage so far in this series.

Conversely, if the Habs can limit some of the Hurricanes' pressure it could go a long way in helping Montreal claw their way back into this Eastern Conference final as rookie netminder Jakub Dobes is sporting a record of 1-2 with a 2.67 goals against and .917 save percentage.

The Hurricanes relentlessness and immense pressure all over the ice has caused fits for just about every team in the leagues including Montreal, however, if the Canadiens cannot figure this "bunch of jerks" out in short order they may find themselves on the golf course before the weekend is out.

Stay tuned, game four should be a highly entertaining affair.
