The Calgary Flames have landed the big fish. In a year where available goalies are all over the place, they landed the best one. Markstrom, 30, has signed a six-year contract worth $36 million ($6M AAV). The Flames get: at long last, a stable No.1 netminder for the next few years. For my money, Markstrom [...]
The Edmonton Oilers signed forward Kyle Turris to a two-year contract ($1.65M AAV). The Oilers Get: a former top-six center who never seemed to take that step and become a legit first-liner, and who has faded dramatically over the last two seasons. Fantasy Players Impacted: Turris will slot into the Oilers’ lineup as the third-line [...]
Fantasy Impact: The Florida Panthers have signed forward Carter Verhaeghe to a two-year deal worth $1M AAV, and defenseman Radko Gudas to a three-year deal worth $2.5M AAV. The Panthers Get: A depth forward in Verhaeghe who can chip in some production with minimal ice time. They also get a hardnosed big hitter on defense [...]
The Washington Capitals have put pen to paper with The King. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has signed a one-year deal to become their backup. The Capitals get: a really great fit here. They have one of the top young goaltenders in Ilya Samsonov and they are clearly going forward with him as their guy. But he [...]
Fantasy Impact: The Toronto Maple Leafs signed winger Wayne Simmonds to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million. The Leafs get: a power forward on the tail-end of a productive fantasy hockey career. Although that tail-end has lasted for several years now. But from 2013 to 2016 there was no more coveted a power forward in [...]
The Minnesota Wild trade forward Luke Kunin and the 101st overall draft pick to the Nashville Predators for forward Nick Bonino, the 37th overall draft pick and the 70th overall draft pick. The Wild get: A 32-year-old coming off his best season in five years. Nashville essentially sold high here on Bonino, who is a [...]
The Pittsburgh Penguins traded goaltender Matt Murray to the Ottawa Senators for Jonathan Gruden and the 52nd overall draft pick. The Senators get: Their starting goalie. Murray will be their starting goaltender of the future if he can stay healthy this season. Murray will be their stopgap solution if he gets hurt – yet again [...]
