Cheap PIM Options for Fantasy Hockey Leagues

Radko Gudas USA Today

Daoust delivers the goods on some cap-friendly PIM deliverers.

Two weeks ago we looked at the underrated value of players who provide a high volume of hits and PIM. The results showed that even players who are not high-level talents at the offensive end of the rink van be very effective overall contributors in the right type of league. Furthermore, the name value of these scrappers is generally inferior to their equally-valuable and offensive-minded counterparts often making them easy to acquire. This week we will look at rugged players who signed cheap contract extensions within the last month. They may be undervalued but are certainly worthy of consideration for acquisition.

Daoust with some more under-the-radar rookies to keep an eye on.

With the regular season finished, most keeper leagues are dormant and many GMs are more focused on the NHL postseason than their fantasy teams.  If your league has farm rosters to store prospects this is a good time to snatch some underrated gems.

The NHL continues to provide us with interesting entry level signings and many of them involve players who are very relevant in fantasy hockey. Let’s take a look at those with a cap hit of less than $1 million for the benefit of those in cap leagues:

PIM Producers in Salary Cap Leagues

Daoust gives us some names to consider if you need to fill other categories besides goals and assists.

In roto leagues it is extremely important to put together a balanced roster that can produce in every category. Obviously, your star players will do the heavy lifting in the offensive categories. But for the most part these star players are not going to be major contributors in other areas like hits and PIM. Sure, there are exceptions such as David Backes and Milan Lucic but they are certainly few and far between.

Coming to America

Soderberg

After what has seemed like decades of speculation, prospect Carl Soderberg has finally decided to come to the NHL. The Boston Bruins inked the 27-year-old forward to a three-year contract with an unofficial cap hit of $866,667. The first year of the deal will be lost when he joins the Bruins within the next few days but having such a talented forward locked up for multiple years at such a low cost is a big deal for both the Bruins and his fantasy hockey potential.

Recent Rooke Contract Signings

Tyler Graovac (C) - Minnesota

Daoust dishes the goods on a few unheralded young players with some upside.

At this time of the year there are many prospects that are signed to entry-level contracts. Some are drafted players who finished their junior or college season while others are undrafted free agents who have made an impression on NHL clubs. With most people focused on the NHL trade deadline movement and the final stretch of their fantasy leagues, this is a chance to acquire some previously unknown talent.

Eric Daoust with some more fantasy hockey bargains.

This week we conclude a multi-part series that will cover many NHL players who are delivering good fantasy numbers at a bargain price in the shortened season. Obviously, the team that wins a league with a salary cap is the one that gets the best value out of every dollar allocated to its roster. This will include players who have a cost that is near the league minimum. Getting the most out of them can go a long way towards improving your chances of winning.

The focus will be put on players who have a cap hit under $1 million for at least this year and next year. Some have real potential to be scoring line players for years to come while others are shorter-term solutions that can still give your team a boost in the proper setting.

Dealing With Expensive Slumps

Shea Weber USA Today

Eric Daoust on how to work around expensive players who aren't playing up to expectations.

All hockey players have slumps from time to time. As frustrating as it is for the player himself, it will really mess with the emotions of his fantasy owners. We live in the moment so it is often difficult to look past a recent string of blank stat lines and focus on the bigger picture. In salary cap leagues this can be even more frustrating when this player has an expensive cap hit.

A perfect example this year is Shea Weber.

Michael Ryder USA Today

Eric Daoust takes a look at the recent trade between Dallas and Montreal.

Two days ago there was a trade that saw Erik Cole traded from Montreal to Dallas in exchange for Michael Ryder and a third round draft pick in 2013. Dobber’s fantasy take on the transaction can be found here. Here we will dig deeper and look at the deal from each team’s perspective with a dedicated focus on their respective situations within the NHL’s salary cap structure.
