The playoff race is heating up and the trade deadline is just two weeks away. For us fantasy freaks, it’s an exciting time where every morning is like your birthday. But for goaltenders, it’s a much more ominous feeling, as the intensity level of games starts to rise and there’s no longer any room for error. There’s no time for mental mistakes. Every play is that much more important and it’s all put on the line for a mere two points in the standings. On top of it all, many are constantly a part of trade rumors.
So which ten goalies are facing the most pressure as March approaches? Which goalies are the most important to their team’s success? You can make a case for all 30 starting goalies, as every team has a legitimate chance to make it to the playoffs.

Less is More for Turco

Marty Turco

Marty Turco is a popular topic of discussion when it comes to fantasy hockey goaltending and that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. There have been some beefy rumors of a trade involvingTurco and Martin St. Louis milling around lately, which has only added fuel to this fire. But despite the fact he has been one of the best regular season goalies in the league for more than five seasons, until he wins a playoff series debates will always exist regarding whether or not he’s a giant underachiever or a playoff hero ready to break out. But Turco is proving by his recent actions and play that he’s no overrated goalie and things will be much, much different this spring.

Evgeni Nabokov

For more than half a century the All-Star weekend has been a time for the league’s best players to kick back, relax and enjoy the festivities. But for goaltenders, the experience has always been much, much different. While the skaters get to flash their sick skills to the entire world, the goaltenders have the near-impossible task of matching the level of talent displayed by the All-Star players - and they have to try and look good while doing it.

Patrick Lalime

Remember when Patrick Lalime was the scorching hot starter for the Ottawa Senators and was averaging more than 30 wins for four consecutive seasons? That sure seems like ancient times to all you fantasy hockey freaks, but for him it’s a vivid memory, as if it were only yesterday. The same feeling is shared with Chicago Blackhawks head coach Dennis Savard, who continues to roll with his philosophy of playing the hot goaltender and has put his trust in Lalime for the time being. Fortunately, it’s paying off when the organization needs it most.

 CUJO

If you haven’t heard by now, Curtis Joseph is on the prowl for a team to join for the rest of the season and there’s actually a number of organizations interested in the wily veteran’s services. Considering his recent success with Team Canada at the Spengler Cup and the stability he brought to the Phoenix Coyotes last season, Cujo’s stock is actually quite high right now. Add to it his ability to bring solid insurance in net and he has become very appealing to teams that desperately need a veteran presence as the playoff race starts to heat up.
