Angus’ Prime Cuts 08-09 – Part 3 of 5

Part 2

To make the team, a player must show something beyond the stat sheet. Similar to TSN broadcaster Pierre McGuire's annual “Monsters Team,” the Prime Cuts squad is chalk-full of intangibles such as heart, determination, hockey IQ, two-way play, grit, and clutch scoring ability. Most of the players on this squad are also under appreciated (in both fantasy and real hockey circles). There are obviously some big stars on this team – the usual suspects – but there are also some under-the-radar players who you may not have noticed this season.

When you hear that a player was “rusty” in their first game back from an injury, what images start dancing in your head? Do you envision him lacking energy or a powerful first stride? Or maybe he’s mishandling the puck and making bad passes? Whatever it is, you know the tell-tale signs and they are fairly recognizable. But for goaltenders, the signs or “symptoms” are not quite as noticeable – especially if your name is Ryan Miller.

I thoroughly enjoyed putting together the 2007-2008 Prime Cuts squad. There are obviously some big stars on this team – the usual suspects – but there are also some under-the-radar players who you may not have noticed this season for whatever reason. (How's that for a rhyme?) Starting today, a section of the team will be released to DobberHockey every few days until the regular season wraps up, when the full roster will be completed.

The NCAA championship brackets were determined over the weekend and with the tourney beginning this Friday in Bridgeport and Minneapolis, allow me to shed some light on the goalies being displayed in this year’s Frozen Four. There are a number of big-time goalies preparing for the battle that leads to Washington, D.C. and some of them have legitimate NHL prospect value.

Le Dilemme de Columbus

 Nash

The playoffs have started in the CHL, but that doesn't mean the hockey season is over for those who didn't make the cut. The World U18s start April 9th in Fargo, Minnesota. Find out who's a lock for Team Canada, and who might join them pending a first-round loss.
