Roos Lets Loose

Despite never having laced up a pair of skates (except for those of his two young sons) and growing up in Red Sox crazed Massachusetts, Rick Roos has been a huge hockey fan nearly all of his life.  Inspired by often wearing a Canadiens jersey to the old Boston Garden (it’s a long story…) and living to tell about it, Rick started to join fantasy hockey leagues back in the 90s, where he found himself waiting eagerly by a fax machine for weekly stats updates.  He has since been in – and won – leagues featuring elite fantasy hockey writers. In real life, Rick is an attorney, which made him the perfect choice to write his previous “Holding Court” column on DobberHockey, where he debated both sides of a fantasy hockey issue and rendered a verdict for readers to debate. Later, for several years, he did similar for the popular “Cage Match” series. Today, Roos is freewheeling through a variety of monthly pieces: Forum Buzz takes a look at some hot topics our readers are discussing in the forum; Mailbag allows readers to write in to Roos with fantasy hockey questions; Goldipucks and the Three Skaters takes a look at three players (in the spirit of the old Cage Match, except Roos determines who is too hot, too cold…and ju-u-ust right); The Tournament is where Roos polls the readers and the forum community on a certain topic, just the way Tourneys ran in the old Cage Match, until a winning player in that topic is declared.

Cage Match Tournament, Week 2: Which of these slumping players is least likely to bounce back?   What better way to help celebrate the official arrival of 2017 than by another winter cage match tournament! Cage Match: The better fantasy value between Duncan Keith and Ryan Suter

By |2016-12-21T01:16:12-05:00December 21st, 2016|Roos Lets Loose|

It’s been months since I last did a defensemen match-up, so I’m teeing up a rearguard battle here before returning next week with a perennial DobberHockey favorite - winter cage match tournaments. I’m also doing something I’ve rarely done, which is repeating a cage match - Ryan Suter vs. Duncan Keith. But considering their [...]

By |2016-12-06T20:34:00-05:00December 7th, 2016|Roos Lets Loose|

Digging deep on Schenn and Kreider to help you determine which player has better short- and long-term value   Hopefully all DobberHockey loyalists make time to read the monthly Top 100 Rotisserie Players list. I’ll often consult it when picking match-ups for this column, including this week, when two 25 year olds ranked right next [...]

By |2016-11-29T15:05:42-05:00November 30th, 2016|Roos Lets Loose|

Who is the better fantasy hockey own, Jakub Voracek or Phil Kessel?   This week’s focus is on two players rebounding from poor 2015-16 seasons –Jakub Voracek and Phil Kessel. Are their strong starts sustainable, or at this point in their careers are they more like what we saw last season? Cage Match is here [...]
