Fantasy Impact: The Detroit Red Wings traded winger Tomas Tatar to the Vegas Golden Knights for first (2018), second (2019) and third-round (2021) draft picks.
The Red Wings get: three great picks. Quite a bit, consider how the market has played out on Deadline Day.
The Golden Knights get: an under-achieving top-six winger. A little bit odd considering they have David Perron, Jonathan Marchessault, Reilly Smith, James Neal and Alex Tuch. Not to mention recent breakout player, the red hot Ryan Carpenter. So he essentially fills that third-line role and makes Vegas’ third line more potent.
Fantasy Players Impacted: Tatar can really benefit from this fresh start. Not to mention – the Vegas Golden Knights have the Midas Golden Touch when it comes to getting players to over-achieve. Even on the third line, I see Tatar’s production increase significantly. This also helps his linemates Cody Eakin and Tuch, while pushing Carpenter and Oscar Lindberg down the totem pole. I like Tatar’s ES points to spike, but his PP points will dip.
Tatar’s absence frees up a spot on Detroit’s top PP unit. One of Tyler Bertuzzi, Andreas Athanasiou, Dylan Larkin or Justin Abdelkader could slot into that spot. Larkin is the obvious bet, but if he goes there then the second PP unit really suffers (i.e. “sucks”). They may put toughness on that unit in the form of Bertuzzi or Abdelkader. My guess would be Abdelkader, but I have limited confidence in that guess.
Fantasy Players this helps, in order:
1. Tatar
2. Abdelkader/Bertuzzi
3. Athanasiou
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order:
1. Carpenter
