Wheeling and Dealing in the West

The trade deadline is upon us, and I expect a flurry of activity Tuesday morning.  While the prices so far have been extremely high, most of the eight playoff teams in the West still need to do some tinkering and upgrading before having a playoff line-up ready.  There still remain a few big names out there (Smyth, Souray, Guerin, Bertuzzi) that may be moved by Tuesday’s deadline.  I also have a gut feeling we are going to see a blockbuster deal involving non-UFA assets (some names like Zherdev, Horton, that kind of player).  Here is a breakdown for the current needs for the eight playoff teams in the Western Conference:

Guess who is up above a point per game and now sits in the top 20 in league scoring. Here is a hint – he started the season off with 19 points in 32 games and poolies were frantically emailing me for advice on whether to dump him. It got to the point where even I myself wrote (for all to see) that he would be lucky to finish in the mid to high 60’s.

Kovalchuk Turnaround Has Finally Arrived

Ilya Kovalchuk has six points in his last 11 games in what his fantasy owners would easily deem “a disappointing season”. He has six points and is a minus-10 in his last 11 games, but things are finally looking a little brighter for the 23-year-old. Enough of the Steve Rucchin experiment! End the Niko Kapanen trials! Stop the Glen Metropolit insanity!

UPDATED: In two separate deals, the Thrashers have picked up Keith Tkachuk from St. Louis (pending his waiving his no-trade clause) for a first-round pick, a third round pick (both in 2007), a second round pick for 2008, and Glen Metropolit.   The Thrashers also picked up Alexei Zhitnik from Philadelphia in exchange for Braydon Coburn.

Barch Has Bite

26 year-old Krys Barch has spent more time in the ECHL the last three seasons than he has in the American League; so what was he doing on the ice during last night's rousing 4-1 win by the Dallas Stars over the Anaheim Ducks? Simply put, his job.

The Count from Sesame Street was onto something … it’s all about the numbers

1,000,000 – The number of page hits Dobber’s site passed on Wednesday. Pretty damn impressive for a slack-jawed yokel from the suburbs of Toronto. I’m sure I speak for all of us in congratulating Dobbs on this milestone, and in thanking him for having no life so that we may finish in the upper half of our pools. Congrats buddy.
