The Time is Now for Stafford

Ninth time is the charm, or so the saying goes.

Well, maybe the saying doesn’t go quite like that, but it certainly bodes true for 21-year-old Sabres prospect Drew Stafford. There are 20 different NHL teams that would welcome Stafford to the their roster, but the Sabres haven’t been one of them. He has been a victim of the numbers game – too much depth up front in Buffalo. So Stafford has had to bide his time in Rochester, bouncing from the American League to the National League like a yo-yo, subbing in for various injured players but never truly getting a solid opportunity. Now, on his ninth recall of the season, Buffalo’s first-round pick in 2004 (13th overall) will get that chance.

The Sharks have been struggling badly the past 10 games and might be forced to make a move if nothing changes. They are losing ground to the Ducks as well as numerous other teams in the West. Rumour has it that they are looking at acquiring some veteran help, as they might worry about entering the postseason one of the youngest teams in the NHL.

am one....

Before I begin my weekly purging of all fantasy related neuron transmissions, I do need to address something that has been on my mind all week. On Superbowl Sunday, Winnipeg lost two of its most decorated fire-fighters in a terrible accident during a seemingly routine house fire. It is too bad that it takes incidents like this to make us all realize just how important and often under-appreciated these everyday heroes are. I for one am going to make a better effort to give these men and women a few more friendly nods, appreciative waves, and spontaneous thank-you’s. None of us know when it may be our families that they save, and the fact that they ‘run towards’ while all others ‘run away’ is pretty damn heroic in my book. Anyhow, I just want everyone who reads this to sit back and think for a moment about losing everything that matters to you, and in turn, join me in doing a little extra to show our appreciation.

It was the 2003-04 season. Brad Stuart led the Sharks in assists with 30, Jonathan Cheechoo had 47 points, and Alexander Korolyuk was 9th in team scoring. Two years later, and Joe Thornton had 90 assists, Cheechoo popped in his 47th goal, and Korolyuk... was in the RSL. Sharks property once again, we look at what this means for keeper league owners. Also, the Flyers partake in some Un-planned Parent-hood, and a mysterious Swedish prospect joins Markus Naslund, Peter Forsberg and Kenta Nilsson in the record books this week in Bugg Bytes.

With plenty of fantasy players worth owning for years to come, the Pittsburgh Penguins are the best squad in the NHL if you’re looking to rebuild your keeper-league team.
