Afternoon notes – The Kings have cut Slava Voynov, so I would expect that he’s had enough and is KHL bound. Truly undeserved…Carolina GM Jim Rutherford says that Justin Faulk is a Top 4 defenseman on his team. I wonder if they would have signed Kaberle had they known what they had in Faulk and Ryan Murphy? Just finished a little hockey pool draft with the fellas at The Hockey News office. I picked sixth and snagged Malkin. Crosby went 15th – almost getting to me in the second round…The Habs have cut Michael Blunden and claimed Blair Betts off of waivers.

The Flyers have sent Brayden Schenn to the AHL. Apparently, him playing just one AHL game chopts $1.7 million in bonuses off the cap, so I’m sure they will recall him after that one game. For now, Sean Couturier is on the squad. The team also cut Erik Gustafsson and they placed Blair Betts on waivers.

According to the Tennessean, the Preds have gone with the same sets of lines for two straight days of practice. So here are you line combos for Game 1:

Legwand, with Colin Wilson and Craig Smith

Spaling, with Sergei Kostitsyn and Martin Erat

O'Reilly, with Tootoo and Halischuk

Geoffrion, with Smithson and Hornqvist

Of note – Smith and Smithson were move to the wing, Spaling wins the "winger lottery" and O'Reilly is stuck with checkers.

The Lighting have sent Dana Tyrell to the minors and will keep Brett Connolly with the big club. For at least nine games. Mattias Ohlund has been placed on IR.

Jarome Iginla, who pretty much sat out all of camp, confirmed that he will play on Saturday. Basically because he didn't want the Flames out of the playoffs before October was even complete. This team is HURTING. Especially with Backlund out.

But now it's looking like Brendan Morrison actually has a chance to play on Saturday. At worst, he's two weeks away. He has been cleared for contact. If you recall last year, he got off to a very hot start.

Dustin Penner's LBI has him doubtful for Friday's opener. That would probably mean that Scott Parse gets a chance to redeem himself for a lackluster camp.

Here's an interesting breakdown on Sergei Kostitsyn. Of note, he had just one shot in four preseason games. But I think Hoag isn't seeing the forest through the trees here. Or at least, he is stressing the goals and his message comes across as "Kostitsyn will take a step back this year because his goal totals will go down to a less-than-impressive 15". And yes, I agree that the goals will go down this season. But he is a setup man first and foremost. So as long as he is never put on a line with O'Reilly (another pass-first guy), he should be safe for 35 assists. With upside. In fact, put him on a line with two guys who can score – say Geoffrion and Smith – and he could very well be 18-45-63.

No shocker here – the Hawks have signed Brandon Saad, who had a great camp and a great prospects tourney, to an ELC. I would keep expectations tempered for this season, and for another two after this one.

For some reason, the Islanders signed Jay Pandolfo to a one-year deal. The aging, slowing-down forward practically took last season off. A one-way deal for near the minimum.

The Isles have signed Ryan Strome to an ELC. That Pandolfo signing pretty much assures that he'll play this year in junior, though.

I'm seeing a lot of jokes about how "bad" Cody Franson is and how he is the No.7 defenseman on the Leafs. This based on, what, four preseason games? Regardless of foot-speed, he has the most hockey sense on the blue line on that team (at least offensively – he's second to Schenn defensively) and he's built like a brick shithouse. I still think he's their third best defenseman. And his stats have been fantastic, throughout his career. A plus-25 in his short career and pretty much a 30-point player already and he's only 24. I got your back, Cody! (now don't make me look bad)

Toronto has acquired David Steckel from New Jersey for a fourth rounder. Now they've finally got that sixth center that they were craving. I'm joking, he's a great addition in terms of playing the right role. Now if they could get rid of Colton Orr and trade Tyler Bozak to a team that could use him properly, they would be all set. As it stands now, Bozak will have to play on the wing just to get into the top 12 – and if he does that, it could knock Matt Frattin right out of the lineup. And seriously, why hasn't Jay Rosehill been sent down yet?

With Steckel gone, the Devils will sign Petr Sykora. I do not recommend him to anyone, as he has spent nearly two years overseas – because he couldn't stick with the Wild. And he couldn't stick with the Wild after managing just 46 points with the Penguins on Crosby's line. What makes you think he could possibly top 40 points as a Devil? Nostalgia?
