What’s really interesting – but often overlooked - about the trade deadline is how it can cause even smart fantasy hockey GMs to make easily avoidable errors or to exercise poor judgment. Knowing this, I’ve put together a list of the five biggest mistakes to avoid making during and after the trade deadline.
Fantasy Impact: The New York Rangers have landed Ryane Clowe from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a second in 2013, a third in 2013 and a conditional 2nd in 2014 that could become a fifth rounder if some conditions aren't met.
Fantasy Impact: The Dallas Stars have traded veteran forward Jaromir Jagr to the Boston Bruins for prospects Layne MacDermid and Cody Payne, as well as a second-round draft pick.
Fantasy Impact: The Vancouver Canucks have landed Derek Roy from the Dallas Stars. In exchange, they give up top defenseman prospect Kevin Connauton and a second-round draft pick.

Lame title aside, Derek Stepan is playing some inspired hockey of late. He's been the Rangers best Centre and is only three points and one goal behind "superstar" Rick Nash's team leading 30 points and 13 goals respectively. In most fantasy leagues, Brad Richards and Rick Nash went many rounds ahead of Stepan, yet here we are about to enter the home stretch of this abbreviated season and Stepan is playing the best hockey of his career.
Fantasy Impact: The Calgary Flames have traded defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for prospects Reto Berra, Mark Cundari and a conditional first-round draft pick. The condition being, if the Blues fail to make the playoffs this year that pick becomes a fourth for this summer plus a first in 2014.

Amato takes a look at 41-year-old Jaromir Jagr's strong season
When Jaromir Jagr signed with the Dallas Stars last summer it probably raised quite a few eyebrows. The Stars haven’t made the playoffs since the 2007-08 season, and if they aren’t in a full rebuild mode with their roster, they are certainly retooling. You wouldn’t think that would be the ideal destination for a veteran player trying to end his career on a high note. Then again, Jagr has been anything but conventional during his playing days and has always marched to the beat of his own drum. Taking a three-year hiatus to play in the KHL was clearly evidence of that.
