Frozen Tools Forensics: Goalie Streamers

This week on Frozen Tool Forensics we are going to complete the trio. The last two weeks we have been reviewing players who might be worth a stream in do or die fantasy matchups. We have hit on forwards and defensemen and this week we are turning our attention to goalies.

In order to grab the data for this review, we are looking at a couple of sources. The general report is the Percent Rostered report so we can get an idea of which goalies might be available for a stream, and to get some basic stats for each goalie. In order to highlight the goalies, we might want to target we are using the Hot/Cold metrics from the Frozen Tools section. This can be accessed on the front page, each team has a list of hot and cold players and includes goalies, but it can also be viewed in each report. There is an icon next to a player's name indicating their status – hot, cold, injured, starting (for goalies), etc.

For the purposes of this article I am grabbing the lists of hot and cold goalies and combining it with the Percent Rostered data. I exported that report and rearranged it to fit the article. I ran the report on March 28, so will be missing stats from Thursday night. The report covers the last two weeks which gives us a snapshot of what players have been doing recently. The table starts with player info (name, team, and games played during the last two weeks), then moves on to their individual stats (wins, save percentage, and quality start numbers), and finally we have the Fantax Rostered Percent (I use Fantrax vs Yahoo as it tend to better reflect the status of active leagues).

First up; our 'hot' list.

There isn't really much to be said about Juuse Saros or Frederik Andersen and to some extent Cam Talbot. Saros has been excellent, but you won't be able to get him. You might have had a chance with Andersen or Talbot (injury and poor performance), but it is unlikely either are available at the moment.

Anthony Stolarz and Justus Annunen are in the "good option if they play, but don't play that often" category. If you see either of them scheduled to start, they would be someone good to grab, but it is hard to predict which games they get, so attempting to plan for the future is a challenge.

Karel Vejmelka is a bit of a step up from that. He plays for a worse team, sure, but in terms of volume he is in a better place. He had lost the job to Connor Ingram for a while this year, but as of late has been playing quite well. They are back to a 50/50 split so he still isn't an ideal start, but you can attempt to predict his schedule a little more successfully given the alternating plan Arizona is currently using.

That leaves us with Jake Allen and Joonas Korpisalo. They aren't really in the same situation, but they do both appear to be getting more of the volume lately. Since his trade (first game March 14), Jake Allen has played six games, sat for two, with only one bad start. It is certainly a decent beginning for Allen and a good run for New Jersey who desperately needed a goalie. New Jersey has a bit of an odd schedule coming up with two back-to-backs next week, so his games played numbers are a little bit capped, but he is at least guaranteed some starts. Korpisalo, on the other hand, has been off and on all season. At the moment he seems to be getting some volume and is going through a brief 'on' period. It feels a little bit hard to count on it lasting, but he has had a few good games recently.

On the flip side we have a few cold goalies as well.

This really isn't a good look for Tristan Jarry. He is about to lose out on a second start in a row and has not been great over the last couple of weeks. If you are a Jarry manager, maybe check and see if Alex Nedeljkovic is available, though if history is any guide a run from him won't last long either.

Jacob Markstrom's been hurt by his absences (literally injuries) and the declining prospects of the team. Calgary shipped out a bunch of D at the deadline and are out of the playoff hunt so the team seems willing to give Dustin Wolf a few chances in net. Wolf initially got called up when Markstrom was injured for a few games, played okay as is now seemingly entering into something of a timeshare with Markstrom.

As for Philipp Grubauer, John Gibson, and Elvis Merzlikins, there really isn't much good to say. They each have had stretches of reasonable play this season, but recently they have not been great, have been in timeshares, and not necessarily been the better goalie in that time share. It isn't just the goalies either, as the teams haven't been providing much support. Columbus has one win in their last nine, the same is true in Seattle, while Anaheim has only one win in their last 11. Unpredictable games, poor performances, and struggling teams. Color me not interested.

Mackenzie Blackwood is sort of in a similar category, but at least he will likely get the volume when healthy. He is back now from a recent injury so should be getting most of the starts for San Jose. What that is worth exactly is very definitely a question mark, but he should at least be getting saves.

That is all for this week. Do your part to support organizations working to make hockey for everyone.
