Ramblings: Hughes Out 8 Weeks, Hyman Season Debut, Robertson Hattie, Pointless Point (Nov 16)

Well, what can you say about Jack Hughes. With the news that he will miss eight weeks following finger surgery, you can dock at least 20 games again from him for the third consecutive season. The fact that this was not even an injury from a game or even practice this time around (a team dinner!) is truly awful luck. His reputation of finding new and inventive ways to get injured will be tough to shake, and a reason that he will fall down draft boards next season. The most recent injury will certainly go on the list as one of the most unusual injuries to a professional athlete.

Since 2021-22, only 11 players with as many games played as Hughes (268) have a better point-per-game average (1.19 PTS/GP). You can probably list at least half of the names without looking them up. Yet since 2021-22, 28 players have more points than Hughes. Some of those players include Steven Stamkos, Robert Thomas, Elias Pettersson, Jack's teammate Jesper Bratt, and even Jack's brother Quinn Hughes. That should give you an idea of how much value Hughes has already lost because of his injuries. Subtract games lost again at the end of the season and Jack's actual value will fall even further than that.

Here are the Devils' lines without Hughes, where most of the offense seems to be concentrated on the first line:

TIMO MEIER – NICO HISCHIER – JESPER BRATT

PAUL COTTER – ARSENY GRITSYUK – DAWSON MERCER

ONDREJ PALAT – STEFAN NOESEN – JUHO LAMMIKKO

LUKE GLENDENING – NATHAN LEGARE – SHANE LACHANCE

Also of note: Simon Nemec was used on the top power play over Luke Hughes on Saturday. But with Dougie Hamilton expected to return to practice on Monday, it may not matter. Ironically, Luke led the Devils with a goal and a power-play assist in their 3-2 shootout win over Washington.

For the Capitals, Jakob Chychrun played 32:11, the most of any player on Saturday. He has six points in his last six games, including an assist on Saturday. Chychrun also took six shots in this game against the Devils.

Let's turn to more positive news out of all places, Buffalo. Rasmus Dahlin returned to the Sabres' lineup on Saturday after being on leave for the past week. Dahlin chipped in two assists while logging 25:45 and taking his usual place on the top power play. His two assists were on the four consecutive goals that Buffalo scored to erase a 4-1 deficit and defeat Detroit 5-4 in overtime.

Tage Thompson had a goal and an assist that were both highlight worthy:

In coughing up five goals on 27 shots, John Gibson does not have a win and has only one quality start in his past five games. Gibson has been given the start in each of the Wings' past three games, although a timeshare with Cam Talbot would probably make more sense.

Also from the outjury department, Zach Hyman made his season debut on Saturday. Hyman was playing his first game since injuring his wrist during the playoffs. Hyman finished with an assist, two shots, and 11 hits (!) in 23:10 of icetime playing on a line with Connor McDavid and Matt Savoie, as well as taking a spot back on the top power play.

Even with Hyman returning, Jack Roslovic remained on the top power play because Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is still out of the lineup. With a goal and a power-play assist on Saturday, Roslovic has 13 points over his last 11 games. I added him in one league several days ago and you could do the same if he still happens to be available (31% Yahoo/45% Fantrax).

Connor McDavid scored two goals and added an assist in the Oilers' 4-3 overtime win over Carolina. McDavid has six multipoint games over his current eight-game point streak – a streak where he has piled up 16 points. McDavid is closing in on Nathan MacKinnon in the scoring race.

After not dressing on Friday, Frederik Andersen was back in on Saturday. Andersen allowed four goals on 23 shots in the loss. It seems as though the Canes are leaning toward a three-headed goalie monster of Andersen, Pyotr Kochetkov, and Brandon Bussi. As a result, don't expect high volume from any of these goalies.

–

Joseph Woll also made his season debut on Saturday, allowing three goals in a 3-2 loss. Woll should receive plenty of starts for the near future, as Anthony Stolarz was just placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

The Leafs now have five losses in a row and are one of the roughly 5-6 teams with a below-.500 record. I'm not a Leafs fan by any means, but that's not as big a deal as it sounds even though it might seem like time to panic. The NHL is filled with mid teams right now, and every team goes through its struggles.

Brayden Point was held without a point again on Saturday, extending his pointless streak to four games. His season line now sits at three goals and nine points in 17 games, which is barely above a 40-point pace. His shot volume has been on a two-year decline, currently sitting at 2.1 SOG/GP this season. His advanced stats (8.6 SH%, 8.0 5on5 SH%, 1.7 PTS/60, 927 PDO) show that he could do with some better luck, but without really watching any Lightning games, I wonder if he's battling through some sort of injury. Point was one of the first six selections for Team Canada back in June, so he's already looking at a very long season. Based on the slow start, I moved Point down in the most recent Roto Rankings.

Another day, more injuries, or what Elliotte Friedman called a night of attrition. All three of the following are defensemen, no less.

Thomas Harley is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, missing Saturday's game after he was a game-time decision. With Harley out of the lineup, Lian Bichsel reached 20 minutes for the first time this season. He won't score anywhere near as many points as Harley, but the 6-7 Bichsel got eight hits in on Saturday.

Drew Doughty left Saturday's game in Ottawa after blocking a shot off his foot. After the game, coach Jim Hiller said he would know more on Sunday, but Doughty left in a walking boot. Based on that, expect Doughty to miss games. The Kings have been using a five-forward top power play, which has hurt Doughty's value because he has no power-play points all season.

Charlie McAvoy left Saturday's game in Montreal after taking a Noah Dobson shot to his face. McAvoy was bleeding and lost a tooth, but the severity of the injury is unknown. However, McAvoy was able to travel home with his team. The video of him taking the shot is circulating all over social media, so you can look it up because I don't feel the need to post a video that might make someone squeamish.

There were a few more injuries to less prominent players, which might get picked up in the Injury Ward coming today.

–

In the Stars' 5-1 win over Philadelphia, Jason Robertson scored three goals on six shots. Including his hat trick, Robertson has three consecutive three-point games where he has taken a minimum of six shots per game. Prior to his three-game bender, Robertson had not scored a goal in nine games. Talk about consistency! Robertson is now tied with Nathan MacKinnon for the league lead with 82 shots.

Roope Hintz registered assists on all three of Robertson's goals. Hintz's point streak has now been extended to six games, and he has eight points over that span.

–

Jesper Wallstedt posted a 28-save shutout of the red-hot Ducks on Saturday. That's the second straight shutout for Wallstedt, who now has four wins and five quality starts over his last six games. Filip Gustavsson should start today's (Sunday's) game. Based on his recent play compared to Gustavsson's, Wallstedt could see a greater frequency of starts than was projected before the season. Gustavsson seemed to have at least an outside chance at reaching 60 games before the season, but he has struggled a bit this season with just four wins in 13 games to go with a 3.09 GAA and .896 SV%.

Kirill Kaprizov led all players on Saturday with nine shots on goal, although he failed to record a point.

–

The other shutout on Saturday was posted by Anton Forsberg, who needed just 17 saves to earn a goose egg against his former team in Ottawa. Forsberg is in his first season with the Kings as a backup to Darcy Kuemper.

–

With two assists on Saturday, Josh Morrissey has eight points in his last five games. Among defensemen, only Cale Makar has more points than Morrissey (19 PTS in 18 GP).

Mackenzie Weegar is ice cold with no points in six games and no goals and four points in 20 games. He has also lost the top power play role to Rasmus Andersson. He is still averaging two shots per game and two blocks per game, so he is still showing peripheral value. But in pure scoring leagues, it's time to move on.

Andersson picked up a power-play assist while logging 26:37, the most of any player in the Flames/Jets game.

–

Jaden Schwartz scored twice on six shots in the Kraken's 4-1 win over the Sharks. Schwartz has four points over his last four games. He also leads Seattle with 14 points in 18 games, even though he is generally not on the top power play.

–

The Canucks have signed David Kampf to a one-year, $1.1 million contract. Kampf's contract was recently terminated by the Leafs following an AHL demotion. Kampf has never reached 30 points in an NHL season, so this signing should have very few fantasy implications. The Canucks are very thin at center with both Filip Chytil and Teddy Blueger sidelined, which is why they acted quickly. Kampf is a strong penalty killer and is good in the faceoff circle, both areas where the Canucks need serious help.

–

Sunday's first game starts at 9 am ET/6 am PT, so go set your lineup if you haven't already.
