Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Eastern Edge. This week we'll be taking a look at Erik Karlsson's reliable production, Cole Caufield joining the game's elite snipers, Nikita Kucherov's dominant run as well as the Carolina Hurricanes' potential weakness in goal.

Let's get to it!

For those of you invested in Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson this year, you are being handsomely rewarded with some solid production out of the soon-to-be 36-year old veteran. Karlsson has taken full advantage of the Penguins resurgence this year with 54PTS in 64GP while accumulating 21 of those points through the team’s power play which currently ranks fifth league-wide at 24.6% efficiency.

Aside from his 101-point season with the San Jose Sharks in 2022-2023, Karlsson is on pace for his most productive campaign in several years as the slick Swede is currently pacing for 68 points if he can maintain this level of play. That being said, Karlsson is more than reassuring his owners of said level with a magnificent 19PTS in his last 14GP since returning from the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympic Games.

Keep in mind that Karlsson is doing all of this with journeyman Parker Wotherspoon (6PTS in his last 5GP) as his most frequent partner on the blueline. No less impressive is the level of consistency in Karlsson's production this year with 10PTS in his last 5GP, 15PTS in his last 10GP and 21PTS in his last 20GP giving fantasy managers every reason to slot him into the lineup on a nightly / weekly basis.

The fact that the Penguins remain in a battle for a post-season berth along with a handful of other teams, as well as the team schedule down the stretch will be rather beneficial as it relates to Karlsson who will continue to play heavy minutes through to the end of the campaign while seeing plenty of time on the man advantage (currently seeing 71.0% of the team's power play minutes).

Mr. Saturday Night certainly did not disappoint over the weekend as Montreal Canadiens sniper Cole Caufield more than lived up to the moniker with a hat-trick and 5-point night against the Islanders that culminated with a 7-3 Habs victory.

It has been another breakout season for the diminutive American as the 25-year-old is currently ranked second league-wide in goal scoring (43) just behind MacKinnon's (45). Caufield's 24 tallies since flipping the calendar to 2026 lead the league in that category with a six-goal flurry over his last five games alone.

The growth in his passing game has been clearly out-shadowed by his scoring exploits with Caufield collecting 31 apples over the course of the campaign demonstrating his continued ascension towards a well-rounded offensive game while keeping the opposition guessing.

Continued deployment on the Habs' first line alongside team captain Nick Suzuki and former first overall selection Juraj Slafkovsky will have Caufield among the games elite point producers in short order (if not already!). It's an amazing time to be a Montreal Canadiens fan.

We are all well aware of Nikita Kucherov's elite and dominant offensive skills, however, the heater that he has been on in 2026 is simply incredible. The NHL's top point producer has amassed a total of 68PTS in 30GP since January 1st with 13 of those points coming in the last four games alone. In terms of per-game status Kucherov is in a class of his own at 1.86PPG followed by Connor McDavid (1.68PPG) and Leon Draisaitl (1.63PPG).

It has been nothing short of an MVP-caliber season for the Tampa Bay Lightning star winger who for the ninth consecutive season will finish above the point per game threshold. The scary thing for Kucherov's opponents whether in fantasy or real-life, is that the 32-year-old seems to be getting better with age as Kucherov is currently on pace for a career year of 148 points. If he were to finish with that total, three of his four most productive point-per-game seasons would have come in the last three years alone. Simply put, Kucherov is an elite point producer in fantasy circles and will continue to be just that for a number of years to come.

The Carolina Hurricanes are enjoying another solid campaign with the team currently leading both the Metro division as well as the Eastern Conference while playing a high tempo, relentless puck possession style that we have all come to know and love out of a Rod Brind'Amour coached team.

The 'Canes organization will be hoping this is the year that the team makes a deep playoff run to push past the Conference Finals to represent the East in the Stanley Cup Final. The only thing I can see holding this team back is its goaltending with a certified band-aid boy in Frederik Andersen alongside rookie sensation (and late bloomer) Brandon Bussi as the teams two main options.

Bussi has been leaned on heavily for most of the campaign to positive results, however the 27-year-old rookie has faltered of late with a 2-3 record accompanied by a 3.84 goals against and .840 save percentage over his last five games played with no quality starts during that span and a -12.74 goals saved above expected. Meanwhile, it has taken some time for Andersen to gain a foothold of his game, however the imposing Dane has fashioned a 5-0 record with a 2.92 goals against and .872 save percentage including a 40.0% quality start rate and -8.67 goals saved above expected over his last five games played as he has temporarily at least taken over number one duties.

The Hurricanes play a structured style that will certainly benefit as well as insulate the team’s goaltending heading into the NHL's postseason. However, when the chips are down and everything becomes magnified as it always does, Carolina is going to need one or the other to make that timely save that has eluded this franchise time and again over the last several postseason runs.
