As always, players rated within +/- 5.0 rating points of each other should be considered equal, and at that point will depend on team needs (rebuilding or going for it) or personal bias.

Goalies are hard. A Vezina winner one year, may not even make your pro team or active roster the next year. New coaches, new team direction, injuries, mental toughness – it all factors in from one season to the next, even one month to the next. For prospects, you can add other factors. Important ones, such as the roadblocks ahead of him – i.e. is there a top goalie signed for the next six years to big money? Is he an older goalie with a contract up in two years? Is there a ‘Golden Boy’ prospect goalie that is a year older or younger than the prospect goalie you are looking at?

Let’s look at some examples. Cooper Black was never drafted and doesn’t stick out as a great goalie. But he’s been solid, he’s at the right age (24-26) to make the jump, and Sergei Bobrovskiy’s contract is up. Erik Portillo is 25, hasn’t seen many NHL looks, but Darcy Kuemper has been hot and cold and he’s almost 36 and has one more year after this one – that’s a pretty good spot. In a vacuum, with nobody ahead of them and purely on skill – some of these guys would be ranked much higher. Factoring everything, here is my best shot:
