Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Eastern Edge. This week we'll take a closer look at Florida Panthers GM Bill Zito and his recent moves to reposition the franchise for several other runs at the Stanley Cup. We'll also dive into the Toronto Maple Leafs doubling down with their acquisition of late-blooming defenseman Darren Raddysh to a long-term deal.

Let's get to it!

Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito is wasting no time in reloading his two-time Stanley Cup winning roster for the upcoming 2026-2027 NHL campaign with two significant trades this past weekend. Zito began his Father's Day by moving 23-year-old middle six winger Mackie Samoskevich to the Seattle Kraken for the 25th overall selection in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft and a second round pick in 2027 (the better pick between the Winnipeg Jets or Columbus Blue Jackets – each previously acquired).

The Panthers GM then flipped the 25th overall selection along with the Panthers ninth overall pick in the 2026 draft, the Panthers' first round pick in 2029, as well as the Panthers' second round pick in 2030 for Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk, reuniting the two Tkachuk brothers in South Florida.

A quick look at the Florida Panthers top nine is sure to give anyone associated with the Atlantic division nightmares throughout the off-season. It is a deep, veteran-laden and physical group of forwards that play a relentless style that is sure to cause fits for several Atlantic division opponents.

Looking at the Tkachuk deal from a fantasy perspective, owners should be rather pleased with his landing spot as the former Senators captain will no longer be one of the main sources of offense like he was in Ottawa (along with Tim Stutzle). The fact that he will no longer be getting a steady dose of the opponents' top defensive forwards should have Brady bounce back to the 70-point plateau as early as next season. The only hitch in the get along would be Brady's propensity to miss a handful of games each season as the 6'4" bruising forward has only played one full 82-game schedule in his 8-year career.

Two players may take a small hit in production due to the Panthers' recent acquisitions would be centremen Sam Bennett as well as 24-year old Anton Lundell, each of whom could find themselves pushed down the lineup to make room for the younger Tkachuk brother giving Florida an extremely deep group of talented forwards with immeasurable Stanley Cup experience. That being said, the scoring will be spread around a bit with each of the teams' first three lines capable of creating and generating offense when needed.

The Toronto Maple Leafs left no question as to how they are going to proceed this off-season with their acquisition of 30-year-old defenseman Darren Raddysh whom they promptly signed to an 8-year deal worth 8.5M AAV. It is a bold move by newly appointed general manager John Chayka with many believing that the franchise should at the very least retool and restock the prospect pool after what amounted to a rather poor season in Leafs Nation.

All that being said, the late-blooming rearguard is going to give the Buds a different look on the team's power play where he excelled alongside some of the games best players with the man advantage (Nikita Kucherov, Jake Guentzel and Brayden Point). That's not to mention his heavy shot from the point which will give opposing penalty kills a much different look stylistically as Morgan Rielly was never much of a threat from the point.

The 6'1" 202lbs defenseman is most certainly an upgrade over the aforementioned Rielly both from a production standpoint as well as a physical standpoint which will be more than welcomed amongst the Maple Leafs top six rearguards. Each are an element that the Leafs have been sorely lacking, especially in the physical department with Chris Tanev playing only 11 games during the 2025-2026 campaign due to multiple injuries.

The big plus for Raddysh owners is that newly-appointed head coach Jim Hiller will lean heavily on his new number one defenseman with Raddysh being in line for an increase at 5v5 and a healthy dose on the team’s top power play unit alongside the likes of Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

It remains to be seen how Hiller will deploy his most skillful players, however, with the current roster a little top heavy when it comes to talent, it would suggest to me that the big boys will get plenty of opportunities this coming season with many of the teams star likely to see a small bump in production compared to their 2025-2026 totals. That said, I would expect Raddysh to take a small step back as it relates to his production but nothing major, say in the 5- to 10-point range.

That's all for this week folks, I hope you all enjoy the NHL draft this coming Friday and Saturday.
