Puck Picks: DeBrincat’s Shot Barrage; St. Louis’ Top Line Upside; McKenna’s Power Play Role, and More

Welcome back to Puck Picks! Each Thursday, I break down some of my favorite NHL bets, explain the reasoning behind them, and track performance transparently. The goal of this column isn't just to share picks, but to help you recognize why certain spots have value so you can identify them throughout the season. I'll be tracking every pick transparently in this column, logging units won and lost as the year progresses.

Last week, we went 3-4 for -0.13 units. That brings the season record to 13-10 for +3.58 units, with an average bet return of 9.41%.

Let's dive into tonight's picks:

Alex DeBrincat 4+ Shots (+100, 1u), 5+ Shots (+225, 0.4u), 6+ Shots (+450, 0.1u), 7+ Shots (+900, 0.04u)

DeBrincat is a volume monster right now. He's averaging a whopping 10.8 shot attempts per game over his last five, with 4.8 shots on goal per game, and he's cleared 5+ in three of those five games.

The matchup couldn't be much better. Vancouver is the worst team in the league in both CF% and SF%, so Detroit and DeBrincat should own the puck possession tonight. Detroit is on the road, but that hasn't slowed him down. He's had 13 shot attempts in both of his road games this year, with 5 and 7 shots on goal.

At even money, the book is giving DeBrincat a 50% chance to reach four shots, which feels low for a player averaging nearly five. The 5+ tier at +225 implies just a 31% chance, yet he's hit it in 60% of his last five games. The upper tiers are small sprinkles, but against the league's worst possession team, a big night is well within reach.

Nashville Predators Under 26.5 Shots (-124, 2u)

The only times Nashville has outshot its opponents this season have come at home. On the road, the Predators have managed just 21, 20, and 25 shots. They're also bottom four in the league in shots for per 60 at 5v5.

Boston isn't great in SF%, but the Bruins have played in low-event games and have done a better job limiting their opponents than Nashville has. My model has Nashville at 24 shots tonight, giving us two and a half shots of cushion. At -124, the book has this under at about 55%, and I have it comfortably higher than that.

If Swayman or DiPietro save props pop up at 23.5 or higher, take the under there instead. With an expected goals against of about three, a 23.5 saves line effectively gives us a bit more cushion on the shot total, plus some protection if the goalie has a really bad start or gets injured.

Jimmy Snuggerud 1+ Point (-125, 0.75u)

SGP: Snuggerud, Holloway & Thomas 2+ Points Each (+1324, 0.1u)

SGP: Thomas & Holloway 3+ Points, Snuggerud 1+ Point (+3736, 0.04u)

SGP: Thomas & Snuggerud 3+ Points, Holloway 1+ Point (+5573, 0.04u)

SGP: Snuggerud & Holloway 3+ Points, Thomas 2+ Points (+7032, 0.02u)

Yes, we're going back to the Blues' top line. They're rolling lately, and Snuggerud is a huge driver of it. A slow start to the season and a strong Vegas opponent are keeping their odds down, but Snuggerud is getting around 20 minutes a night on this top line. St. Louis is also at home, so they can get the matchups they want and let this line cook. At -125, the book has Snuggerud at about 56% to record a point. That's far too good a price to pass up for a top-line winger in this kind of form.

I'm also targeting the upside of this line to go off. They have yet to dominate a game this season, something they did plenty of at the end of last year. A 2+ point night from each player is highly correlated, and it hit in 7 of their last 20 games last season. That's a 35% hit rate on a combo priced at +1324, which implies just 7%. Even accounting for a slower start this year, there's a lot of room between those numbers.

The 3+ combos aim for the ceiling while acknowledging it's very unlikely all three players hit three points, which is why we're sprinkling a few different combinations rather than going all in on one.

Check the odds if you build these yourself. The books love to rip you off on correlated outcomes. I wouldn't take less than +1000 on the 2+ point SGP.

Sergei Bobrovsky Under 25.5 Saves (-110, 1.2u)

Toronto has slightly turned things around in its own shot production this year, but the Leafs are still bottom five in the league in shots against per 60. When we dig into the game logs, though, a lot of those shots came against very strong opponents. When Toronto faces a low shot generation team, it tends to play well defensively. The Leafs limited Nashville to 25 shots, the Islanders to 20 and 27, and Ottawa to 29.

Toronto also has a big home ice effect in SF%, with most of its shots against coming on the road. The Leafs are much better in Corsi against than shots against, meaning teams are hitting the net on an unusually high share of their attempts. Either Toronto starts blocking more of those shots, or opponents regress to missing the net a little more. Both work in our favor.

New York is one of the worst shot generation teams in the league so far, sitting bottom five, with 8 of their 10 games failing to reach 26 shots. That's 80% of their games coming in under this line before we even subtract goals, while the -110 price implies about 52%. I'm expecting the Rangers to have a hard time reaching even 25 shots. And even if they get to 29, Bobrovsky has been leaky the last few years and isn't the elite goalie he once was, so a few of those shots likely end up in the net rather than as saves.

Gavin McKenna 1+ Power-Play Point (+360, 0.12u)

McKenna isn't getting many even-strength opportunities, but he's looking great since moving to the Leafs' top power-play unit, a unit that's second in the league in power-play goals behind only Utah. He's logged over four minutes of power-play time in each of the last three games since the move.

He's not just along for the ride either. McKenna has four power-play shots in that span with a power-play goal to show for it. At +360, the book is giving him about a 22% chance at a power-play point. This prop should be closer to +240, or roughly 29%, given his role on one of the league's most productive units.

Fraser Minten 2+ Shots (-146, 1.3u)

Minten has taken on a bigger role for Boston lately and has been firing the puck more than his usual self. He's averaging 5.5 shot attempts per game over that stretch and has cleared 2+ shots in every one of those games.

He's missing the net on quite a few of his attempts, so I'm not inclined to ladder this one. But at -146, which implies about 59%, I'm happy with the price for 2+.

Filip Hronek Under 1.5 Shots (-105, 1.1u)

Hronek has failed to clear this line in all but one game so far this season. He's also generating fewer attempts at home than on the road, as he's getting the hard matchups when Malhotra can play the matchup game.

Over his last five games, Hronek is averaging just 2.2 shot attempts per game. A defenseman should be closer to four attempts per game to expect two to hit the net. At -105, the book has this under at about 51%, which is nowhere near his actual hit rate. I'll keep riding this under until the odds properly shift to shorter than -150.

Good luck if you're tailing! Results will be updated in next Thursday's column for full transparency. Please gamble responsibly and never wager more than you're willing to lose.
