Saturday’s NHL Picks: February 9, 2019

2019-02-09

The San Jose Sharks squeaked one out last week in OT against the Arizona Coyotes to preserve a perfect Gold, Silver and Bronze week for me last Saturday, with my overall record for last week sitting at a crispy 5-1.

Looking to keep the momentum going heading into what is looking like the best Saturday of the year – so far – for hockey heads and betting degenerates alike. Hockey Day in Canada will be in full swing today, with all seven Canadian clubs in action, including a potential first-round showdown between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens.

In addition, another 13 matchups await us today. So without further ado, here are my Saturday picks. Good luck!

2018-19 Record

Gold: 7-4
Silver: 9-2
Bronze: 4-7
Side Bets: 16-17

Overall combined: 36-30 (55%)

Gold

San Jose Sharks @ Edmonton Oilers – Pick: Sharks

I know, I know, another week where I am betting on the Sharks. But before you start mashing buttons and throwing shade, remember that San Jose is rounding into form as a true Cup contender with a seriously deep lineup.

The Sharks have also been rolling of late, winning seven of their last 10 contests and four in a row. Whereas Edmonton has again been a major disappointment all season long, seemingly squandering another year of Connor McDavid in his prime. Changes in the front office and behind the Oilers’ bench haven’t done much in terms of improving the team’s on-ice performance, as the club has continued its downward spiral with seven losses in their last 10.

San Jose carries a solid 5-1 record against Edmonton over their last six meetings into this one tonight, and expect that record to be sitting at a neat and tidy 6-1 tomorrow morning. Lock in the Sharks as my Gold pick of the week.

Silver

LA Kings @ Boston Bruins – Pick: Under 5.5

There’s usually one game a week that I really like an Over or Under pick, and this one is shaping up to be exactly that. This matinee matchup between the Kings and Bruins is looking like an awesome spot to sprinkle a wager on the Under 5.5 goals mark.

📢 advertisement:

Not only are both teams traditionally stingy and tough on the backend, but the recent numbers when these two clubs get together are screaming Under. Take this in: Overall, the total has stayed under the number in 15 of L.A.’s 22 games on the road; as well, the total has stayed under the number in four of the last five contests between these two. And, finally, seven of the Kings last 10 games in Boston have stayed, you guessed it, under the number.

What else do you need to hear to want to put a bit of loot on the under here? If you can find it at an even 6 line, don’t be shy about putting some substantial coin on this one. Kings-Bruins Under 5.5 goals, my Silver play of the week.

Bronze

Winnipeg Jets @ Ottawa Senators – Pick: Jets

Yeah, I know. Betting against the Senators again. And while Ottawa looked good against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night in a shutout victory, the Ducks have only two wins in the last 54 calendar days. That’s right, Anaheim has managed only two victories over their last 21(!) games.

So, long story short, Ottawa gets little to no cred for beating a team that would struggle against some of the better teams in the AHL right now, let alone the NHL. Anyway, you know the drill here: Winnipeg is the real deal, as they currently sit one point up on the closing Nashville Predators for first place in the Central Division, so needless to say the two points here are critical for a club with legit Cup aspirations.

The Jets rebound from an ugly loss to the Montreal Canadiens last time out and bury the Senators in this all-Canadian matinee matchup.

Side Bets

Florida Panthers @ Washington Capitals – Pick: Capitals

Colorado Avalanche @ New York Islanders – Pick: Over 6

Nashville Predators @ St. Louis Blues – Pick: Predators
