Tuesday Game Picks: Allen To Stymy Sens; Washington And Columbus Could Lack Scoring

We are back with another Tuesday edition of Game Picks, where we give out a Gold, Silver, and Bronze selection every Tuesday during the NHL season. There are only three games on the NHL schedule tonight, which doesn't give us much to choose from, but I still think there are some good betting options. I've done my best to research each of the games and I think I have found some winners. The two matchups I am most interested in are the Ottawa Senators @ Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals @ Columbus Blue Jackets games. Hopefully, I can get back on track and sweep the board tonight.

Below I highlight my Gold, Silver, and Bronze selections for tonight's games. Last Tuesday was another rough day that saw me go (1 – 2), bringing my season record to (13 – 17).

Gold Selection

Ottawa Senators @ Montreal Canadiens – Pick: Jake Allen Over 29.5 Saves (-114)

All season long the Montreal Canadiens have been bad defensively, and they have only gotten worse as of late. This year the Canadiens are averaging 34.1 shots against per game, the fifth most, and recently that number has gone up. Over their last 10 games, they are averaging 37.1 shots against per game, the second most in the NHL over that span. The Ottawa Senators on the other hand are averaging more shots per game recently than their season average. This season the Senators are averaging 33.7 shots per game, the fifth most, but over their last ten games they are averaging 36.6 shots per game, the third most over that span. The Canadiens have allowed 36 or more shots in four of their last five games, and in two of those games, they allowed 40 or more.  The Senators have recorded at least 33 shots in six of their last seven games, and in two of those games they had at least 40 shots. Oh, and on Saturday the Senators recorded 36 shots against the Canadiens. With how many more shots the Canadiens are allowing, and how many more shots the Senators are taking than their season averages recently, it looks like Jake Allen will be busy tonight. Speaking of Allen, in his last game he recorded 38 saves, that's a lot of saves. Also, Allen has recorded at least 31 saves in five of his last seven games, which means he is used to facing a ton of shots. With how awful the Canadiens have been at suppressing shots lately, and how often the Senators are shooting, I wouldn't be shocked if Allen faced nearly 40 shots tonight.

Silver Selection

Ottawa Senators @ Montreal Canadiens – Pick: Ottawa Senators In Regulation (-115)

The Montreal Canadiens just aren't very good, the Ottawa Senators aren't anything to write home about either but they're definitely better than the Canadiens. The Senators proved it this past Saturday when they whooped the Canadiens 5 – 0. The Canadiens have lost three straight games, four of their last five, and have lost 10 of their last 15 on home ice. Whereas the Senators have won three straight games and four of their last six. A big reason why the Canadiens have been struggling is all the injuries they have, and that will hurt them again tonight. Cole Caufield, Brendan Guhle, Juraj Slafkovsky, Jake Evans, Joel Armia, Jonathan Drouin, Sean Monahan, and Brendan Gallagher are all on Injured Reserve and won't be available tonight. Joel Edmundson is day-to-day and will be a game-time decision tonight. It's hard to win games when you are missing half of your regular lineup and I think the Senators will take advantage of that again tonight.

Bronze Selection

Washington Capitals @ Columbus Blue Jackets – Pick: Under 6.5 (-107)

The Capitals and the Blue Jackets have had something in common over the last couple of weeks, they both are struggling to score goals. Over their last 10 games, the Capitals are averaging 2.2 goals per game, the fifth fewest in the NHL over that span. The Blue Jackets are averaging slightly more with 2.5 goals per game over their last 10, the eighth fewest. Six of the Capitals last eight games have had less than seven goals, and 4 of the Blue Jackets last eight games have had less than seven goals. Meaning that over their last 16 combined games, the Capitals and Blue Jackets are winning this exact bet in 63% of games. Not only that but in their last meeting three weeks ago they combined for a grand total of one goal, which makes me think we might be in store for another low scoring affair tonight. With how much these two teams have struggled to generate offense recently, I am confident that they will hit the under for us tonight.
