Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Eastern Edge. This week we'll resume our look at the second round of the Eastern Conference Stanley Cup playoffs.

Let's get to it!

Carolina Hurricanes / Philadelphia Flyers (CAR wins series 4-0)

The Carolina Hurricanes continue to steamroll their way through the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs with another four-game sweep, this time against the Philadelphia Flyers. It was another clinical series put on by one of the most structured teams over the last several years as coach Rod Brind'Amour seeks to push this group beyond the Eastern Conference Final.

Frederik Andersen has simply been dominant for the Hurricanes, rewarding the organization's faith in him as the team's number one with some of the best hockey he has played in his career. The Danish netminder is on a historical run joining the great Terry Sawchuk (1955) and Jacques Plante (1969) as the only goaltenders to begin a postseason 8-0 while conceding two goals or fewer in each game. Andersen's stats over the course of these playoffs are astounding with the 6'4" 229lbs netminder fashioning the aforementioned 8-0 record accompanied by a miniscule 1.12 goals against average and phenomenal .950 save percentage including a 87.5% quality start rate. It doesn't hurt to have such a structured system in front of him; however Andersen is doing more than his part for a Carolina Hurricanes squad that looks rather unbeatable at the moment.

Speaking of dominating performances, the line of Taylor Hall – Logan Stankoven – Jackson Blake continues to lead the charge offensively for the 'Canes with all three lending sizable contributions throughout their second round series. Hall (one goal, four assists), Stankoven (three goals, zero assists) and Jackson Blake (three goals, four assists) have been, without a doubt, Brind'Amour's most consistent trio throughout the team’s postseason run, however what should be concerning is the continued lack of production from the team's first line of Andrei Svechnikov – Sebastian Aho – Seth Jarvis who combined for a total of six points in the four game series versus the Philadelphia Flyers. That trend will certainly need to reverse itself as the organization will need all hands on deck to aid in pushing past the Eastern Conference finals that has been the team’s anchor for the past number of years.

Buffalo Sabers / Montreal Canadiens (MTL leads 2-1)

The Montreal Canadiens have taken over home ice advantage in their second round series against the Buffalo Sabres after an emphatic 6-2 victory on Sunday evening at the Bell Center in front of a raucous crowd of just under 21,000. The Habs were finally able to string two wins together for the first time this postseason giving themselves a 2-1 lead heading into Game 4 on Tuesday night. The most encouraging part for Montreal's brass is the fact that the trio of Cole Caufield – Nick Suzuki – Juraj Slafkovsky are starting to heat up with both Caufield and Slafkovsky each pocketing a goal in Game 3 while team captain Nick Suzuki has points in four straight games. Montreal's secondary scoring continues to be a driving force as it relates to offensive production with Alex Newhook (four goals, zero assists), Jake Evans (zero goals, three assists), Zachary Bolduc (one goal, one assist) and Kirby Dach (two goals, zero assists) providing all kinds of offensive support to the team’s top point producers.

Canadiens netminder Jakub Dobes continues to demonstrate that he is indeed a legitimate number one goaltender in the National Hockey League with yet another outstanding performance in game three. The 6 ‘4 215lbs Dobes has been nothing short of dominating with a 6-2-2 record accompanied by a 2.18 goals against average and .918 save percentage including a 60% quality start rate so far this postseason. All while remaining unflappable amidst the chaos surrounding his crease as numerous Buffalo Sabres players try to take him off his game. The most encouraging part of Dobes' recent run is that he has 58 consecutive saves without allowing a third period goal in the last six games. Talk about shutting the door on your opposition!

The Buffalo Sabres are by no means out of this series, but if they are going to give themselves a fighting chance, they will need to figure out what has been an abysmal power play. Buffalo has struggled mightily with the man advantage to the tune of four goals in thirty-six opportunities for an 11.1% success rate over the course of this year's playoffs… Yikes!

Buffalo will need much more out of their two towers as both Tage Thompson (one goal, one assist) and Alex Tuch (no points) have not been sharp over the course of the series' first three games. That being said, the team is getting some solid production from the 'grinders' with Josh Doan (one goal, three assists) and Zach Benson (one goal, two assists) providing some much-needed secondary scoring.

In goal, Alex Lyon has surrendered nine goals over the last two games. It will be interesting to see if coach Lindy Ruff turns to Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen who has not played since Game 2 of the first round in order to give his club a spark. Can the Habs keep the good times rolling with their star rookie netminder? Or will the Sabres offense (and by extension their power play) come alive in time to knot this second round series at two apiece? Buckle up folks, we're about to find out tonight.
